On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the fight between WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (33-1, 27 KOs) and challenger Joshua Clottey (35-2, 21 KOs), which takes place Saturday, June13, at Madison Square Garden in New York. This fight will be telecast by HBO in the U.S.

SecondsOut Radio: Ricky Hatton, David Haye, Future of British Boxing
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman focuses on the top fighters in boxing in the UK today. We compare where the careers of Joe Calzaghe, Junior Witter, Amir Khan, Ricky Hatton, David Haye, and Carl Froch were one year ago with where they are today. And we comment on the thrilling come-from-behind 12th-round TKO victory Carl Froch scored over Jermain Taylor this past Saturday night, April 25.
Ricky Hatton, of course, will be facing Manny Pacquiao, regarded by most as the current pound-for-pound king, this coming Saturday night, May 2, in Las Vegas. This fight will take place at 140 pounds, where Hatton is presently regarded as the best fighter in the world. We spoke with a confident Ricky Hatton on a media conference call this past week to get his take on this fight.
David Haye, the former cruiserweight champion who relinquished his belts in that division to move up to heavyweight, will get his wish for a crack at a heavyweight title when he faces the top fighter in that weight class, Wladimir Klitschko, June 20 in Germany. David Haye was in New York this past week for a news conference, and we caught up with him there for some very poignant comments.

SecondsOut Radio: Nonito Donaire and Brian Viloria Reviews, Carl Froch-Jermain Taylor Preview, Tor Hamer and Shawn Raysor on Today's Heavyweights
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by reviewing the two major title fights held Sunday morning, April 19, at the famed Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City in the Philippines.
On that card, Nonito Donaire (21-1, 14 KOs) successfully defended his IBF flyweight title by dominating previously-unbeaten Raul Martinez (24-1, 14 KOs), knocking him down four times, and scoring a fourth-round TKO. The co-feature saw an aggressive Brian Viloria (25-2, 15 KOs) upset Ulises Solis (28-2, 20 KOs) with an 11th-round knockout to capture the IBF light flyweight title. This was the best a rejuvenated Viloria had looked in a long time, and this spirited fight, in which Solis came back in the middle rounds, could earn a Fight of the Year nomination.
One fighter who is trying hard to gain recognition is 26-year old heavyweight Tor Hamer (5-0, 4 KOs). His next fight will be against an opponent to be named on the Andre Berto-Juan Urango undercard May 30 at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida. We had a chance at a news conference this past week at the new Yankee Stadium to speak with Tor Hamer and his trainer, Shawn Raysor, about his career, why American heavyweights are no longer at the top of that division, why so many American heavyweights seem out of shape, and more.
This coming Saturday, April 25, the unbeaten WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (24-0, 19 KOs) of Nottingham, England, travels to America to defend his title against the former middleweight champion, Jermain Taylor (28-2-1, 17 KOs), of Little Rock, Arkansas. This fight will take place at the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn. It will be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime.

No Holds Barred: Dr. Margaret Goodman on Doping, Fighter Health and Safety, and What Must Be Done
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Dr. Margaret Goodman, a neurologist and former chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Dr. Goodman is now also the medical correspondent for No Holds Barred, and we are very proud to be associated with her.
This lengthy interview, conducted March 12, first was posted on SecondsOut Radio in two parts. Here we have it in its entirety.
The topics include why certain substances such as steroids and marijuana are dangerous to the health of fighters and are thus banned in the combat sports. We also discuss many other issues related to the health and safety of fighters, especially what can be done to improve the health and safety measures in the combat sports, and what role a national boxing commission in the U.S. should play.

SecondsOut Radio: Holt-Bradley Preview; More on Khan-Barrera, Margarito Hand Wrap, and Heavyweight Controversies
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman once again discusses some of the good and bad going on in boxing.
We begin with the ever-burgeoning negative side. We follow up on the commentaries of the past two weeks on this show by Dr. Margaret Goodman, focusing again on why the March 14 fight between Amir Khan and Marco Antonio Barrera should have been stopped far sooner than it was because of a severe cut on Barrera's forehead due to an accidental head clash in the first round. We discuss the latest findings in the Antonio Margarito-Javier Capetillo hand wrap scandal, where authorities in California have officially revealed that the hand wraps they were attempting to use against Shane Mosley in their January 24 fight contained calcium and sulfur, two key ingredients of plaster of Paris. We explain that while lifetime bans of Margarito and Capetillo might be justified in this case, there is, unfortunately and incredibly, no central body in boxing which has the authority to issue such a ban. And we also discuss how the American boxing establishment has let the marquee division in boxing, the heavyweights, slip right through their hands and end up centered in Europe.
On the positive side, we preview the important 140-pound title unification fight between WBO champion Kendall Holt (25-2, 13 KOs) and WBC champion Timothy Bradley (23-0, 11 KOs). This fight, between these two Americans, will take place Saturday, April 4, at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It will be telecast live in the U.S. on Showtime.
We spoke with both Kendall Holt and Timothy Bradley to get their views on what they expect to happen in this fight.

SecondsOut Radio: Khan-Barrera Controversy, Dr. Margaret Goodman Part One
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on the fifth-round technical decision victory by Amir Khan over Marco Antonio Barrera Saturday, March 14, in Manchester, England. We reflect on what this fight did and did not prove regarding Khan's technique and chin in the wake of his first-round defeat last year by then-little-known Breidis Prescott. SecondsOut Radio: Khan-Barrera Preview, Knockout Weekend Review, PPV Glut, Showtime and the Internet
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on a good weekend of televised fights. These included the comeback decision win by Delvin Rodriguez over Shamone Alvarez, the second-round TKO by Victor Ortiz over Mike Arnaoutis, the breakout performance by James Kirkland in stopping Joel Julio at the end of six rounds, and the brutal knockout by Mike Alvarado of Emmanuel Clottey at 2:58 of the tenth and final round. We also discuss the implications of these fights for the rankings.
This coming weekend marks the start of four straight weeks of mid-level pay-per-view telecasts in the U.S. The first of these, on March 14, will pit Amir Khan against the legendary but aging Marco Antonio Barrera. This is a major test for both fighters, although of a different kind for each. Can Khan, knocked out in the first round in September 2008 by little-known but unbeaten Breidis Prescott, defeat a top-level fighter? And can the 35-year-old Barrera, who has twice fought lower-level opposition since being dominated by Manny Pacquiao in October 2007, and who contemplated retirement, still safely and competitively compete in the ring?
We had a chance on a recent media conference call to get comments from both Khan and Barrera. And we also comment on this glut of pay-per-views, and what it means, and doesn't mean, for boxing.
Finally, we comment on the efforts to market and position the boxing shows on Showtime. Despite showing many excellent fights, Showtime is way behind their premium cable network rival, HBO, in popularity. We discuss some of the reasons why, in particular their failure to use the Internet and the Internet boxing media properly and effectively, and the almost total absence of the use of social media for their boxing program.

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by reviewing the brilliant performance of lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez, who stopped Juan Diaz in the ninth round Saturday in Houston, Texas. We discuss this early Fight of the Year candidate, as well as the co-feature where featherweight champion Chris John of Indonesia was held to a controversial draw by Rocky Juarez of Houston. We also discuss the implications of putting such an important card like this not on pay-per-view or in a casino city, but on regular HBO in the U.S. and in a major city like Houston, and the likelihood of such good sense continuing to be shown by the lords of boxing if and when the economy rebounds.
Next, we review the Broadway Boxing card held Wednesday, Feb. 25, in New York. We spoke with light heavyweight contender Shaun George, who needed only 1:26 of the first round to stop veteran Jaffa Ballogou, and make his case that he deserves a boost in the rankings and an eventual title shot. We spoke with heavyweight Tor Hamer and featherweight Luis Del Valle, two prospects who fought on this show and remained unbeaten. And we spoke with promoter Lou DiBella about his Broadway Boxing series and boxing in New York.
In a special interview, we spoke with two-time former WBA 154-pound champion Travis Simms, who is now a free agent and, although he has a stellar record of 26-1 with 19 KOs, is actually finding it difficult to get fights.

SecondsOut Radio: Kelly Pavlik, Miguel Cotto, Bob Arum, Marco Antonio Rubio, Michael Jennings
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman previews the February 21 pay-per-view headlined by middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (34-1, 30 KOs) facing Marco Antonio Rubio (43-4-1, 37 KOs), and former welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (32-1, 26 KOs) taking on Michael Jennings (34-1, 16 KOs). While both on the same pay-per-view telecast, the Pavlik-Rubio fight will headline a live card at the Chevrolet Centre in Youngstown, Ohio, and the Cotto-Jennings fight will headline a live card at Madison Square Garden in New York.
All four of these fighters were at a recent news conference at Madison Square Garden, and we hear what they had to say. We also spoke with promoter Bob Arum about why this show is on pay-per-view. And we also address some recent developments regarding the losing battle over Internet piracy being carried out by some content providers, and why they would be better off accommodating those viewers and fight fans in the spirit of "WIW, WIW, WIW", that is, allowing them to watch "what I want, when I want, where I want".

SecondsOut Radio: Vic Darchinyan, Jorge Arce, Bruce Silverglade
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman previews two very different boxing shows coming up this week.
On Saturday, February 7, the long-awaited showdown between two champion sluggers, the IBF, WBC, and WBA 115-pound champion, Vic Darchinyan (31-1-1, 25 KOs), and the WBA interim super flyweight champion and former WBC 108 and 112-pound and WBO 108-pound champion, Jorge Arce (51-4-1, 39 KOs), takes place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. This fight will be shown in the U.S. on Showtime.
We had a chance to speak with both Vic Darchinyan and Jorge Arce on a media conference call about this highly-anticipated fight, which most people expect to be one of the most action-packed of the year.
Also this coming week, on Tuesday, February 3, the first in a series of local shows featuring up-and-coming fighters and run by the world-famous Gleason's Gym will take place at the Masonic Temple in Brooklyn, New York. Most of the fights will be four-rounders, plus a main event featuring two top-level super flyweights, Rafael Concepcion (12-3-1, 8 KOs) against veteran Kermin Guardia (37-8, 21 KOs). This card marks the return to promoting after a two-decade long absence by Bruce Silverglade, who owns Gleason's Gym.
At a news conference this past week at Portobello's Pizzeria and Sicilian Kitchen in New York, we spoke with Bruce Silverglade about his goals as a promoter and with these shows.

SecondsOut Radio: The Life and Legacy of Jose Torres, with Paul Johnson
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman presents a tribute to the late former light heavyweight champion and Hall of Fame fighter, Jose "Chegui" Torres, who passed away January 19. He was 72.
Jose Torres retired in 1969 with a record of 41-3-1 with 29 KO's after fighting in 45 fights and 300 rounds. He won the world light heavyweight championship in 1965 by stopping Willie Pastrano in the ninth round in Madison Square Garden. After three successful defenses, he lost that title to Dick Tiger in 1966 by decision, also in Madison Square Garden.
He was also known as an author and writer, a former chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission, and a fighter for social justice and many causes, including the movement for boxers to form a union.
To remember and honor Jose Torres, we spoke with his long-time colleague and friend, Paul Johnson, the chairman of the Boxers Organizers Committee. He attended the funeral for Jose Torres held this past week in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
We spoke about Jose's life, his legacy, and a project in which he was involved, to call a conference of the major players in boxing, including the fighters, to create some unified structure for the sport.

Computer Problems Again
A few months ago, I was briefly knocked offline by a hardware problem, a blown power supply on my main computer. That was taken care of, but now I face another and different problem: a virus, and one apparently picked up from an ad on a boxing web site.
When I get my computer back from repair, I'll be able to explain more about this in detail. For now, I just have to report that production of my shows has been slowed down. SecondsOut Radio was posted on time this week, but No Holds Barred has been delayed. Ironically, that edition of the show was supposed to discuss issues like the role of social networking and social media in the combat sports. Now we will have to add some discussion of the proliferation of adware, spyware, and viruses in ads on certain combat sports sites, and how to avoid them. So we will be back up and running soon, and feistier than ever.

SecondsOut Radio: Andre Berto
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the WBC welterweight champion, Andre Berto (23-0, 19 KOs). He will be facing what could be the toughest test of his young career, as he fights the former WBA welterweight champion, Luis Collazo (29-3, 14 KOs), Saturday, January 17, at the Beau Rivage Hotel & Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. This fight will be televised in the U.S. on HBO.
In a lengthy interview, we discussed what to expect in this fight, how Andre plans to deal with his more experienced southpaw foe, how it was growing up in a family where participation in the combat sports was the norm, what his plans for the future are, his response to some criticisms directed his way, and more.

SecondsOut Radio: Ron Ross and Lou DiBella on Emile Griffith
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman discusses the new book, "Nine ... Ten ... And Out! The Two Worlds of Emile Griffith".
We spoke at length with the author of this book, Ron Ross, and its publisher, boxing promoter Lou DiBella, about the significance of this story about Emile Griffith, who had a Hall of Fame career in the 1960's and '70's as a welterweight and middleweight champion of the world many times over.
But this book, and our discussion, also delved into that second, less public world lived in by Emile Griffith, that of a gay man. In our conversations, we all emphasized the importance of promoting tolerance, even in this brutal world of boxing.

He headed the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board for over two decades, and now is a top official with one of boxing's major sanctioning bodies, the International Boxing Federation (IBF). His title is personal assistant to IBF president Marian Muhammad, and chairman of officials' education, development, and supervision.
