No Holds Barred: The Margarito Scandal
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the ongoing saga of disgraced boxer Antonio Margarito, who was denied a boxing license by the California State Athletic Commission on Wednesday, August 18.
Margarito and his then-trainer, Javier Capetillo, originally had their boxing licenses revoked because a plaster-like substance was found in Margarito's hand wraps just prior to his January 2009 fight with Shane Mosley in Los Angeles. Margarito has claimed that he was unaware that his hand wraps were being loaded by his trainer, although few people have believed him. Margarito reapplied for a license in Nevada, which then deferred to California, and at the California commission hearing on Wednesday, they voted 5-1 not to grant him a license.
Now Margarito's promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, will try to get him licensed in Texas for a proposed November 13 fight with Manny Pacquiao.
Many people in the combat sports world are outraged that Margarito may be allowed to fight again anywhere. Dr. Margaret Goodman, our medical correspondent and the former head of the Nevada State Athletic Commission Medical Advisory Board, wrote us this statement on Thursday, August 19, about the Margarito situation:
"I think it is flat out a disregard for the system in place. If Margarito and his promoter disagree with California's decision, then fight it in court. This is just another reason why safety issues in boxing take a back seat again and again.
"This is a flagrant demonstration of commission jurisdiction-shopping. This should have been a court case from day one. California did their best, and I believe acted fairly in such an egregious situation.
"If Texas grants Margarito a license, this is nothing new, as Texas has done this sort of thing before. But, the ABC (Association of Boxing Commissions) should consider dropping Texas for taking advantage of this situation. I also think that if Pacquiao fights a fighter on suspension, then he should be held accountable as well."
Also, after the ABC issued a statement late Thursday, August 19, which essentially gave Texas the green light to license Margarito, Dr. Goodman wrote us again with this statement:
"It is another reason why boxing regulation is in such trouble. There is no standardization. A fighter can be found by one commission to illegally endanger the life of his opponent yet be heralded by another commission. It is why boxing and MMA will not stop being niche sports until there is true federal oversight."
We thus discuss this ongoing scandal, and what it means for the ever-declining sport of boxing.

No Holds Barred: NHB E-Mailbag on BLAF, Dr. Margaret Goodman on Cyborg-Akano and Margarito Controversies
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by briefly commenting on the breaking news about the defamation suit filed by attorney Rob Maysey, who is the founder of the Mixed Martial Arts Fighters Association, against CraveOnline, the parent company of the Sherdog.com web site. We expect to have more on this story shortly.
In a follow-up to our last show, we have a new interview with Dr. Margaret Goodman, a neurologist and former chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, who is now also the medical correspondent for No Holds Barred. We discuss two major controversies in mixed martial arts and boxing: the seven-pound weight discrepancy between Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos and Hitomi Akano in their April 11 Strikeforce mixed martial arts fight in San Jose, Calif., and the ongoing scandal involving the hand wraps trainer Javier Capetillo attempted to place on Antonio Margarito for his Jan. 24 boxing match with Shane Mosley, which have since been found to have contained the ingredients used to make plaster of Paris. Dr. Goodman tells it like it is on these important issues.
Next, we go into the No Holds Barred e-mailbag to hear what the listeners of this show think about the issues that have been raised here. Particularly addressed is the recent video blog rant by BLAF aka UFC president Dana White, which was filled with misogynistic, homophobic, and other anti-social and negative epithets.

SecondsOut Radio: Holt-Bradley Preview; More on Khan-Barrera, Margarito Hand Wrap, and Heavyweight Controversies
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman once again discusses some of the good and bad going on in boxing.
We begin with the ever-burgeoning negative side. We follow up on the commentaries of the past two weeks on this show by Dr. Margaret Goodman, focusing again on why the March 14 fight between Amir Khan and Marco Antonio Barrera should have been stopped far sooner than it was because of a severe cut on Barrera's forehead due to an accidental head clash in the first round. We discuss the latest findings in the Antonio Margarito-Javier Capetillo hand wrap scandal, where authorities in California have officially revealed that the hand wraps they were attempting to use against Shane Mosley in their January 24 fight contained calcium and sulfur, two key ingredients of plaster of Paris. We explain that while lifetime bans of Margarito and Capetillo might be justified in this case, there is, unfortunately and incredibly, no central body in boxing which has the authority to issue such a ban. And we also discuss how the American boxing establishment has let the marquee division in boxing, the heavyweights, slip right through their hands and end up centered in Europe.
On the positive side, we preview the important 140-pound title unification fight between WBO champion Kendall Holt (25-2, 13 KOs) and WBC champion Timothy Bradley (23-0, 11 KOs). This fight, between these two Americans, will take place Saturday, April 4, at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It will be telecast live in the U.S. on Showtime.
We spoke with both Kendall Holt and Timothy Bradley to get their views on what they expect to happen in this fight.

No Holds Barred: For Scandal-Ridden Boxing, Tougher Regulation or Abolition?
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman comments on the implications of the latest major scandal in boxing, involving former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito and his trainer, Javier Capetillo.
Both Margarito and Capetillo had their licenses revoked for at least a year on Feb. 10 by the California State Athletic Commission after the commission found that Capetillo had placed pads in Margarito's hand wraps which reportedly contained a hard, plaster-like substance, before his Jan. 24 fight with Shane Mosley. These pads were discovered by Mosley's trainer, Naazim Richardson, during a prefight inspection, and then removed. Mosley, an underdog, then went on to dominate Margarito and scored a ninth-round TKO victory.
In this commentary, we discuss what are really the only two alternatives for the sport of boxing: tougher regulation by the often incompetent and ineffective bodies which are supposed to control the sport, or abolition of the sport itself.

SecondsOut Radio: Cotto-Margarito Review, Broadway Boxing Preview

Goldman reviews the fights between Miguel Cotto and Alfonso Gomez, and Antonio Margarito and Kermit Cintron, held Saturday, April 12, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and previews the fight which will take place this coming Saturday, April 19, between light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins and super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Cotto (32-0, 26 KOs) retained his WBA welterweight title with a TKO at the end of the fifth round over Alfonso Gomez (18-4-2, 8 KOs). Antonio Margarito (36-5, 26 KOs) captured the IBF welterweight championship from Kermit Cintron (29-2, 27 KOs) with a sixth-round knockout. This was a rematch of their 2005 fight, also won by Margarito with a fifth-round TKO.
After the fights in Atlantic City, we spoke with veteran trainer and cutman Miguel Diaz about these fights and what is next for Cotto and Margarito.
The April 19 fight between light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (48-4, 32 KOs) and super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe (44-0, 32 KOs) will be held at light heavyweight, the first time in Calzaghe’s 15-year career that he has ventured out of the 168-pound division.
We spoke with both of these champions, Bernard Hopkins and Joe Calzaghe, at a recent New York news conference. We also spoke with their trainers, Brother Naazim Richardson for Hopkins, and Enzo Calzaghe for his son Joe, on a media teleconference call.

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman previews the big combat sports weekend coming up Atlantic City, New Jersey.
On Friday, April 11, at the Trump Taj Mahal, YAMMA Pit Fighting mixed martial arts makes its much-anticipated debut. There will be two Masters' Superfights and a one-night, eight-man single elimination heavyweight tournament. This card will be shown live on pay-per-view.
The next night, Saturday, April 12, at Boardwalk Hall, a boxing card is headlined by two welterweight title fights.
