WAAR Room with DJ Tribal and Eddie Goldman: Fury-Joshua-Wilder Heavyweight Chaos, on No Holds Barred Patreon Page
Just a day after Fury posted a video confirming that he had agreed to fight Joshua for the undisputed world heavyweight championship on August 14 in Saudi Arabia, news broke that appeared to prevent that fight from occurring, at least for now. An arbitrator ruled that a clause in the contract for Fury's last fight against Wilder, won by Fury in February 2020, mandating yet another match between these two, was indeed still valid. Fury and Wilder had also fought to a controversial split draw in December 2018 in a fight most observers felt Fury had won. Wilder had demanded the arbitration after a deal for a third fight between Fury and him had not been reached. Fury's co-promoter, Bob Arum, had told Joshua's promoter, Eddie Hearn, that he was certain that his side would win in the arbitration hearing since they claimed that the rematch clause had expired, but the arbitrator ruled otherwise. As this was binding arbitration agreed upon by both sides, the only choices for Fury's side were to immediately arrange a third fight with Wilder, or to try to get him to accept step-aside money to allow the Fury-Joshua fight to proceed, something both Fury's and Wilder's camps said would not happen.
We discussed what this now means for the heavyweight division, what are the likeliest next fights for each fighter, how Hearn's apparent acceptance of Arum's assurances of what the arbitrator would rule sank the plans for the Fury-Joshua fight for this summer, and much more. Will Vasyl Lomachenko vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux Be Arum's Revenge?

(Here is a very slightly edited transcript of the section of the latest edition of the No Holds Barred podcast on the upcoming fight between Vasyl Lomachenko and Guillermo Rigondeaux.)
This coming Saturday, December 9, in Madison Square Garden's small 5000-seat room known as the Theater, and televised in the U.S. on ESPN and in the U.K. on BoxNation, there will be another fight with great appeal to the true believers in boxing, but which also might require a miracle for the scores to be fair and reflect what goes on in the ring, should it, as most expect, go to the judges. That is the showdown between the two double Olympic gold medalists and among the best if not THE best technicians in boxing today, WBO 130-pound champion Vasyl Lomachenko and WBA 122-pound champion Guillermo Rigondeaux.
To get this fight, the older, shorter, and smaller Rigondeaux had to move up two weight classes and fight on a card promoted by Top Rank, the outfit that dumped and trashed him after he decisively outboxed and schooled the talented Nonito Donaire in 2013, whom Top Rank was pushing at the time.
Could this fight end in another fair decision? Will Santa Claus make an appearance in your chimney? Do people even use chimneys anymore? Will Arum and company let Rigondeaux win if he fails to knock out Lomachenko a couple of times? Our colleague Charles Farrell is writing a piece on this, so hopefully it will be posted soon, and make sure to read it when it is up.
Top Rank fled the declining HBO boxing program earlier this year for ESPN, meaning they now have expanded reach for their fights on TV on this regular cable network, and through its app, much more than through the premium network HBO. On Saturday, November 11, the Top Rank boxing show on ESPN in the U.S. got about twice as many viewers as the HBO card on that same night. ESPN's card featured Artur Beterbiev vs. Enrico Köelling for the IBF light heavyweight belt and Jose Ramirez vs. Mike Reed. HBO's card was headlined by Daniel Jacobs vs. Luis Arias. So Top Rank's strategy seems to be working so far, with more evidence coming this week as the Lomachenko-Rigondeaux card goes head-to-head with an HBO live show.
This one is a Golden Boy show, headlined by Miguel Roman facing Orlando Salido, who, not fighting by coincidence on the same day as Lomachenko, handed Lomachenko his only pro loss back in 2014 in Lomachenko's second pro fight. But that will likely not be enough to make this show competitive in the TV ratings department with Lomachenko-Rigondeaux on ESPN.
It is of course within reason that Lomachenko might legitimately defeat Rigondeaux. Lomachenko, though many fighters avoid him, has been more active than Rigondeaux, who has had various fights fall through. This will be Lomachenko's third fight this year, and second for Rigondeaux, but who only fought that one controversial round against Moises Flores in June in a fight which ended after Rigondeaux decked Flores just after the bell and he did not continue. Rigondeaux only fought once in 2016 and 2015, while Lomachenko fought twice in each of those years.
Size and age will matter as well, although Rigondeaux has shown no signs of slowing down in the ring. But he sometimes doesn't have the explosive, eye-catching style which judges usually favor. Lomachenko could be the more active fighter also. Both men are defensive wizards and accurate punchers, and also southpaws. Rigondeaux has underrated power, with the Flores fight and his breaking Jazza Dickens's jaw with one punch in his previous fight being examples. Rigondeaux will certainly need that power against Lomachenko, but unless he is able to connect squarely and visibly, all the factors working against him may result in a Lomachenko victory, disputed or not.
Either way, it appears the working script for this fight is entitled "Arum's Revenge". The unanimous decision for Rigondeaux against Donaire, also in New York, upset both Arum and many tools and fools in the Boxing Writers Association of America (lol). Will they bow to fairness this time, or will there be more of boxing's patented trickeration? We shall find out soon.

No Holds Barred: Michael Marley on Manny Pacquiao Conference Call, Mayweather-Pacquiao, and the Media
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with veteran boxing journalist Michael Marley.
Marley, who currently writes for the Examiner.com, also tried to speak by asking a question on Monday's media conference call featuring Manny Pacquiao, trainer Freddie Roach, and promoter Bob Arum, to publicize the May 2 Mayweather-Pacquiao mega-fight. But just minutes into the call, and after apparent confusion and general disorganization on it, Arum abruptly ended the call, and only right after the call's operator announced that the first question would be from Michael Marley. Arum interrupted the operator with an expletive, and said they should "reorganize" and that the call should be rescheduled. So the call was stopped prematurely.
We spoke with Michael Marley by phone Monday shortly after this abbreviated conference call, which we also play on this show.
"I wasn't looking to make a scene or anything. I just had a question I have in mind which I think is a valid question," he said.
"I wanted to ask Manny Pacquiao how he could believe or think or say that he can knock out or stop Mayweather, because the fact is that, all due respect to Pacquiao, a great champion, he'll be fighting one of the greatest defensive fighters ever. And that's coupled with the fact that Manny hasn't knocked anybody out since November 14th of 2009, when he stopped Miguel Cotto in the 12th round."
We went on to discuss what might happen in the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight and why he expects that this will be the first of what will become a trilogy of fights.
We also discussed the reduction of free access for the media to cover and interview fighters compared with the past, how this has only hurt boxing, his many years of experience in working with promoter Don King and in the media, and much more.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti on the Pacquiao-Bradley Debacle and Scandal
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our senior correspondent and the veteran martial artist John Perretti.
This past Saturday, June 9, once again we saw an outrageous decision in a major boxing match held in Las Vegas, Nevada. With about 99 percent of those watching the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley fight agreeing that Pacquiao had clearly won the 12-round fight, two of the three judges incredibly gave it to Bradley, giving him a split decision victory, and again exposing the horrific governance in the sport of boxing.
We spoke with John Perretti Monday afternoon by phone about boxing's latest debacle and scandal. We discussed the issue of whether this absurd verdict was the result of incompetence or corruption, and what we actually know now. We examined the role of gambling in fixing results in sports in general. We discussed why having the Nevada authorities investigate this, as promoter Bob Arum has called for, is, in John Perretti's words, like having "Hitler investigate Mussolini."
We also discussed the role of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, the need for the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate this matter, and the need for a U.S. National Combat Sports Commission to oversee professional boxing, mixed martial arts, and kickboxing. We noted the importance of social media in recording and mobilizing popular outrage about this scandal, why this will make it much harder for this debacle to be forgotten with time, and much more.
In addition, we open by presenting an update on the memorial activities for Grand Master Roger Clark, who passed last week at age 47 from a heart attack. In his honor, there will be a free memorial martial arts seminar this Saturday, June 16, at I.S. 292 at 301 Vermont Street in Brooklyn, New York.

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman previews the February 21 pay-per-view headlined by middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (34-1, 30 KOs) facing Marco Antonio Rubio (43-4-1, 37 KOs), and former welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (32-1, 26 KOs) taking on Michael Jennings (34-1, 16 KOs). No Holds Barred: Kelly Pavlik, Bernard Hopkins, Bob Arum, Melvina Lathan, Jack Loew, Naazim Richardson
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents our final preview of the fight taking place this coming Saturday, October 18, between Kelly Pavlik (34-0, 30 KOs) and Bernard Hopkins (48-5-1, 32 KOs). The undefeated Pavlik, still the middleweight champion, will step up to light heavyweight to face Hopkins, the former middleweight and light heavyweight champion, in a 12-round fight at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and on HBO Pay-Per-View in the U.S.
At the final news conference held in New York Tuesday, October 14, we got the comments of both Kelly Pavlik and Bernard Hopkins about the historical importance of this fight and what to expect in it. We also have the comments of their trainers, Jack Loew, who trains Pavlik, and Naazim Richardson, who trains Hopkins.

No Holds Barred: Ricardo Torres, Kendall Holt, Bob Arum, Nick Lembo, ABC Meeting and MMA
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on the discussion we had on the most recent edition of this show with the award-winning boxing writer and author, Thomas Hauser of SecondsOut.com, about his views on UFC and the mixed martial arts. While we obviously disagreed with most of his views on MMA, we comment on the need to establish the positive social benefits of legalizing and sanctioning MMA. This is not only not done by most of the supporters of MMA, but many of the major MMA promotions actually promote anti-social values and bad sportsmanship.
Next, we preview the much-anticipated rematch between WBO junior welterweight champion Ricardo Torres (32-1, 28 KOs) and challenger Kendall Holt (23-2, 12 KOs). Their first bout, held Sept. 1, 2007, in Torres's hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia, ended with a controversial 11th-round TKO win for Torres. This fight was clearly marred by a wildly unruly crowd, which repeatedly soaked the ring with debris and liquids, even hitting Holt and a cornerman with beer cans.
The Torres-Holt rematch takes place this Saturday night, July 5, at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. It will be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime. It is the most important fight being held this weekend, and should be an energetic, exciting scrap.
On a media teleconference call this week, we spoke with both Ricardo Torres and Kendall Holt about their first fight and what to expect in this one. We also got the comments of promoter Bob Arum about the continuing controversies in boxing, including the much-discussed disqualification last week of Humberto Soto in his fight with Francisco Lorenzo.
We next had a lengthy interview with Nick Lembo, counsel for the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, and a longtime supporter of mixed martial arts. He is attending the annual meeting of the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC), which is going on this weekend in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. MMA is a major topic at this meeting.
Among the topics we discussed were: what the ABC is doing to educate various commissions about regulating MMA in their jurisdictions, why the New York legislature did not recently approve the legalization of the sport, the need for the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act to be extended to MMA, why MMA promoters should work together like even boxing promoters often do, UFC contracts, the establishment by the ABC of an official MMA record keeper, federal ID cards for MMA fighters, clarifications of the MMA unified rules, guidelines for amateur MMA, the ABC deciding to make discussion about MMA a regular part of their agenda along with boxing, and more.

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman previews the big combat sports weekend coming up Atlantic City, New Jersey.
On Friday, April 11, at the Trump Taj Mahal, YAMMA Pit Fighting mixed martial arts makes its much-anticipated debut. There will be two Masters' Superfights and a one-night, eight-man single elimination heavyweight tournament. This card will be shown live on pay-per-view.
The next night, Saturday, April 12, at Boardwalk Hall, a boxing card is headlined by two welterweight title fights. NO HOLDS BARRED: Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez 3 Preview, Wladimir Klitschko-Sultan Ibragimov Review
On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman reviews one of the worst heavyweight fights in years, the title unification bout between Wladimir Klitschko (50-3, 44 KOs) and Sultan Ibragimov (22-1-1, 17 KOs), held February 23 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The IBF champion Klitschko won by unanimous decision also to capture the WBO title.
We provide a scathing review of it and analyze the significance of this enormously dull affair, which was roundly booed by the fans.
After the fight, we conducted interviews with Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, the Klitschkos' promotional company; Leon Margules of Seminole Warriors Boxing, which promotes Ibragimov; former world champion Vitali Klitschko about his plans to return to the ring; and promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank about whom middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik will next face. We also have the audio from entire postfight news conference with Wladimir Klitschko and Sultan Ibragimov.
While these heavyweights sent them home booing or snoring, this coming Saturday, March 1, the final contest in one of boxing's most compelling recent trilogies will take place when WBC super bantamweight champion Israel Vazquez (42-4, 31 KOs) faces former world champion Rafael Marquez (37-4, 33 KOs).
When these two first fought last March, that fight, won by Marquez by a seventh-round TKO, was an instant frontrunner for fight of the year – until their second fight last August. Vazquez gained revenge by winning with a sixth-round TKO in a fight so filled with action that it eclipsed even their first battle.
Now this Saturday these two will meet again, this time, like their first fight, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Showtime will televise it in the U.S.
We spoke with Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez on a recent media teleconference call. We also spoke with promoter Gary Shaw about the importance of this fight.

At a news conference in New York Tuesday, Dec. 11, we spoke with middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (32-0, 29 KOs). He has a rematch at 166 pounds with the man he defeated this past September, Jermain Taylor (27-1-1, 17 KOs), Feb. 16, 2008, in Las Vegas. We also spoke with Pavlik's promoter, Bob Arum, about the successful year boxing has had in 2007, and Taylor's trainer, Ozell Nelson, about what changes their team plans to make in this rematch with Pavlik and about Taylor's engaging manner.
We also spoke at this news conference with HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg. We got the latest, as if Tuesday afternoon, as to what he expects the number of buys for last Saturday's Mayweather-Hatton pay-per-view. And we spoke with him about what plans HBO might have for televising mixed martial arts events.
On a media teleconference call also Tuesday, we spoke with mixed martial arts fighters Tim Kennedy and Jason "Mayhem" Miller. These two middleweights fight this coming Sat., Dec. 15, on the HDNet Fights card at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. Miller and Kennedy first fought each other in February 2003 in an Extreme Challenge tournament, with Kennedy winning a decision.
This past Thursday, Dec. 6, there was a boxing card at the Utopia Paradise Theater in the Bronx, NY. After their fights, we spoke with the new NABF junior middleweight titleholder Yuri Foreman (24-0, 8 KOs), who took a split decision over Andrey Tsurkan (25-3, 16 KOs) to win that belt. We spoke with junior middleweight Sergio Martinez (41-1-1, 21 KO’s), who won his bout by a fourth-round TKO over Russell Jordan. We spoke with heavyweight Monte Barrett (32-6, 18 KOs), who avenged a second-round stoppage by veteran Cliff Couser (26-14, 14 KOs) over him in July by stopping Couser in the second round on this card. We spoke with welterweight contender Joshua Clottey, who has as eliminator fight with the unbeaten Shamone Alvarez Dec. 20 in Las Vegas and was at this card. And we spoke with baseball legend Ozzie Smith who was ringside enjoying the fights about why he likes boxing.

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins with a review of yet another of 2007's stellar fights: the stunning seventh-round stoppage by Kelly Pavlik (32-0, 29 KOs) of Jermain Taylor (27-1-1, 17 KOs) to capture the middleweight championship of the world. Pavlik won that title from Taylor Saturday, September 29, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
We spoke with a victorious Kelly Pavlik right after the postfight news conference to get his analysis of the fight itself and its significance. We also got a comment from promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank about what this fight means for boxing.
This coming Saturday, October 6, the super featherweight rematch between Manny Pacquiao (44-3-2, 35 KOs) and Marco Antonio Barrera (63-5, 42 KOs) also promises to be another memorable battle. This fight takes place at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas and will be shown in the US on HBO Pay-Per-View.
We spoke with Marco Antonio Barrera on a media teleconference call about what to expect in what he has vowed will be the final fight of his storied career. We also spoke with Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions and Bob Arum about this fight and how boxing can better use the Internet.
We close with a comment about another important fight this Saturday when the newly-crowned WBC interim heavyweight champ Samuel Peter (28-1, 22 KOs) faces Jameel McCline (38-7-3, 23 KOs). This fight takes place at Madison Square Garden in New York and will be shown in the US on Showtime.
