Eddie Goldman of No Holds Barred and videographer, musician, and teacher Ian Carpenter were guests on the nationally-syndicated "Joey Reynolds Show" late Monday night/early Tuesday morning, May 4/5. Eddie Goldman is also the boxing correspondent for the "Joey Reynolds Show".

We had another fast-paced and lively discussion with Joey covering numerous topics. We discussed and critiqued the new documentary film on Mike Tyson, and the "One World Champion" video produced by Eddie and Ian. Ian spoke about his own background. Also among the topics we touched on were the movie business; why so much media today is so short; the Art of War Fighting Championship mixed martial arts event coming up May 23 in Beijing, China; boxer John Duddy; the wonderful Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton fight of May 2; boxing and martial arts; the continuing appeal of Muhammad Ali; and, of course, roller derby.

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Dr. Margaret Goodman, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Dr. Goodman, a neurologist who is also the former chief ringside physician for the Nevada commission, has just written an article entitled "What Happened to Doing Our Homework?" for the boxing web site SecondsOut.com (for which I also produce SecondsOut Radio). The article begins to address the controversy surrounding former heavyweight boxing contender Tommy Morrison, who has claimed that his positive test for the HIV virus conducted for the Nevada commission in 1996 was inaccurate.

After an almost 11-year hiatus, Morrison returned to the boxing ring Feb. 22. 2007, in Chester, West Virginia, in a bout sanctioned by that state's athletic commission. He also fought in a fight billed as a "mixed martial arts" bout, although it was not held under MMA rules, this past Saturday, June 9, at the Yavapai-Apache Nation's Cliff Castle Casino in Camp Verde, Arizona. In numerous published reports, Morrison's former agent, Randy Lang, has alleged that recent tests have again confirmed that Morrison is HIV-positive. Morrison has disputed that charge, although he has not made public any tests to refute Lang.

In a lengthy discussion, Dr. Goodman addresses what we really know about the Morrison situation, and whether someone today can go from being HIV-positive to negative. We discuss the latest round of positive doping tests this week involving Johnnie Morton in MMA and James Toney and Danny Batchelder in boxing, and the apparent rampant drug culture in both of these combat sports. We discuss what can be done to combat these health and safety dangers, including what promoters should be doing. And we discuss the question of federal regulation of both boxing and MMA.

(Note: After we recorded this show, it was reported that MMA and Jiu-Jitsu legend Royce Gracie, who fought on the June 2 K-1 Dynamite card in Los Angeles, had also had tested positive for steroid use.)

We spoke with the defending champion, Miguel Cotto, on a media teleconference call.

We spoke with Zab Judah at the prefight news conference this Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.

We also spoke with promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank, which is the lead promoter for this event, both about this fight and his views on the state of boxing and UFC.

We spoke with head boxing writer Dan Rafael of ESPN.com and New York TV personality Kristal Hart of Manhattan Neighborhood Network about how they see this fight and also about mixed martial arts.

And, on a lighter note, we spoke with two ring girls for this fight who come from a different world from most ring girls, Tarah Rodgers and Jennifer Ohlsson, who are both Ford models.

We discuss this past Saturday's TKO victory by Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in his rematch with Chuck Liddell at UFC 71; John's role in the development of the basic structure of MMA in introducing rounds and weight classes and helping design the gloves used in the sport; some lessons from the early days of Extreme Fighting and UFC; his views on technique and conditioning in MMA today; and a hint of what his immediate plans are.

For those new to the sport, John Perretti was one of the founders and the matchmaker of Battlecade Extreme Fighting, which ran from 1995 to 1997, and put on some classic shows. After that, he became the matchmaker for the UFC until January 2001.

Some might question whether this business model is in any real danger at present. UFC toppled the all-time annual pay-per-view TV revenue record by reportedly bringing in more than $200 million in 2006, while the De La Hoya-Mayweather fight, held May 5, 2007, shattered all records for a single pay-per-view TV event in the U.S. by getting 2.15 million buys and $120 million in revenue.

We first speak about pay-per-view with Mark Taffet, senior vice president of sports operations and pay-per-view for HBO Sports, which distributed De La Hoya-Mayweather. We also got his comment on a possible HBO-UFC deal.

We next have a lengthy discussion with a critic of pay-per-view TV, boxing writer Jacqui Snow. She has her own web site and also serves as the moderator of the MySpace boxing group. She discusses the numerous problems with this model, including the growth of numerous web sites which stream these pay-per-views for free. Such sites, several of which she names, may be doing so in violation of copyright restrictions. However, similar to how the original Napster changed how music was distributed, these sites may also force a radical change in the business model of the combat sports.

She has written, "once the genie's out of the bottle, there's no forcing it back," and explains that point in depth. We also discuss how the Internet is actually saving boxing.

Wallid is the driving force behind the newly-formed Mixed Martial Arts World League (MMAWL). This organization has recently begun offering webcasts of many MMA fight events from around the world put on by various promoters. Using the latest technology from the Internet TV provider wavelit.com, these shows are being offered both as pay-per-views and for free.

The next live pay-per-view webcast will be the Gracie Fighting Championships MMA event, which will be held this coming Saturday, May 19, at the Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Among those headlining that card will be ADCC and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza and 2007 ADCC champion Damian Maia.
