No Holds Barred: How to Watch Pacquiao-Cotto, with Jacqui Snow

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Jacqui Snow, our correspondent and the technical consultant for No Holds Barred, and a moderator of the very popular MySpace Boxing Forum.

In our discussion, we explain how to watch the November 14 Pacquiao-Cotto fight online if you do not want to pay the outrageous pay-per-view fee. We discuss the free, peer-to-peer media player from SopCast. We explain where to get information about which sites are showing this and other sporting events for free, such as the MyP2P Forum. We note why we have no problem using these so-called pirate services, which are all free, since the television networks and fight promoters, who get fat and rich from having fighters hit one another until they are too old to do so and are replaced by younger fighters, are the real pirates. And we do so with a No Holds Barred attitude.

You can play or download No Holds Barred here. You can also download No Holds Barred here. If one link does not work, please try another. The show is in MP3 format, so may take some time to download.

The No Holds Barred theme song is called "The Heist", by Ian Carpenter.

No Holds Barred: Jacqui Snow on Internet Video and Combat Sports

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Jacqui Snow, our correspondent and the technical consultant for No Holds Barred. She is also a moderator of the very popular MySpace Boxing Forum.

With a glut of major and minor boxing and mixed martial arts pay-per-views on television, a continuing worldwide economic crisis, and the explosive growth of technology like Internet video and audio, the issue of how people watch combat sports events is still being debated. The boxing business in particular has tried to resist the inexorable march of technology. More and more people are watching these sports online, whether on legal sites, unauthorized videos on sites like YouTube, or on a mushrooming collection of so-called "pirate" sites.

In our discussion, we explain the necessity for these sports to change their business models to conform to these new technologies. They must, as Jacqui Snow insisted, "Adapt or die." We also discuss the issue of piracy, both by legal business like the shrinking group of boxing promoters and television networks which try to line their pockets with expensive pay-per-views which only enrich a handful of people, and by those sites on which live streams or videos of fights appear in violation of copyright laws.

And we name names, discussing the key sites, both legal and otherwise, involved in live streaming video, including SopCast, DeliCast, WWITV, TVU, Livestation, and KeyHoleTV, as well as the forums which link to these sites such as the MyP2P and AllP2P forums.

This is the kind of information which most of the combat sports media either shies away from delivering or wants to keep concealed. But you will hear the truth and the whole truth, right here on No Holds Barred.

You can play or download No Holds Barred here. You can also download No Holds Barred here. If one link does not work, please try another. The show is in MP3 format, so may take some time to download.

You can also order tickets for the 2009 ADCC World Championship, which will be held September 26-27 in Barcelona, Spain, through Ticketmaster.

No Holds Barred: Jacqui Snow on Social Media, Computer and Internet Security, and the Combat Sports

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Jacqui Snow, our correspondent and the technical consultant for No Holds Barred. She is also a moderator of the very popular MySpace Boxing Forum, which has over eight thousand members.

For almost two weeks, No Holds Barred was unable to be produced because of an attack by viruses and adware gotten from a pop-up ad on a sleazy boxing web site.

In a lengthy and animated interview, we discuss just what happened with this virus and adware attack, what steps can be taken to avoid and prevent such attacks, and why certain web sites stoop to trying to make money by such predatory practices.

We also discuss the growing importance of social media sites such as MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter, and how they are transforming the way fans of the combat sports get information and communicate with each other. We also comment on the continuing, pathetic ignorance of and resistance to social media by most of the boxing establishment, along with many other issues.

You can play or download No Holds Barred here. You can also download No Holds Barred here. If one link does not work, please try another. The show is in MP3 format, so may take some time to download.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Mark Taffet, Jacqui Snow and Pay-Per-View (Remix)

This entire show is the same as the one released yesterday, but thanks go to Marc Snow for cleaning up some of the audio problems with our interview with Jacqui Snow. Here is the info again, with a new link on Podomatic:

NO HOLDS BARRED: Is the Pay-Per-View TV Business Model Dead? Mark Taffet and Jacqui Snow

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman discusses the future of the most important business model and source of revenue currently used in combat sports like boxing and mixed martial arts: pay-per-view television.

Some might question whether this business model is in any real danger at present. UFC toppled the all-time annual pay-per-view TV revenue record by reportedly bringing in more than $200 million in 2006, while the De La Hoya-Mayweather fight, held May 5, 2007, shattered all records for a single pay-per-view TV event in the U.S. by getting 2.15 million buys and $120 million in revenue.

We first speak about pay-per-view with Mark Taffet, senior vice president of sports operations and pay-per-view for HBO Sports, which distributed De La Hoya-Mayweather. We also got his comment on a possible HBO-UFC deal.

We next have a lengthy discussion with a critic of pay-per-view TV, boxing writer Jacqui Snow. She has her own web site and also serves as the moderator of the MySpace boxing group. She discusses the numerous problems with this model, including the growth of numerous web sites which stream these pay-per-views for free. Such sites, several of which she names, may be doing so in violation of copyright restrictions. However, similar to how the original Napster changed how music was distributed, these sites may also force a radical change in the business model of the combat sports.

She has written, "once the genie's out of the bottle, there's no forcing it back," and explains that point in depth. We also discuss how the Internet is actually saving boxing.

To listen to NO HOLDS BARRED, click here or here or here and just press the play button on the player. (Please note that if one of these sites has a technical problem, please use another one.) You can also listen to it through this blog and my MySpace page, also by pressing the play button on the player. Also, NO HOLDS BARRED is available through iTunes.
