No Holds Barred: Was Orwell Right About Sport? A Combat Sports Weekend Review
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the view held by George Orwell that "sport is an unfailing cause of ill-will" in light of the events in the combat sports on Saturday, November 12. Orwell wrote this in his 1945 essay entitled "The Sporting Spirit".
First up is a discussion of some of the positives in the combat sports, including the world sambo championships in Vilnius, Lithuania, and the freestyle and catch wrestling events in Wigan, England, and Summerville, South Carolina, in the U.S. Next is an analysis of the horrifying child rape scandal at Penn State University, including a coverup by school administrators and those running the football program, and how it may affect college wrestling. There was also a rally held Saturday in Las Vegas protesting "a string of incidents involving violent, misogynistic and homophobic language" in MMA, including the infamous tweet by UFC fighter Forrest Griffin that "Rape is the new missionary". The protest also called for the establishment of a code of conduct for MMA.
Next discussed are the fights themselves. Bellator had two tournament finals, won by Alexander Shlemenko at middleweight and Douglas Lima at welterweight. A 64-second fight was the only one on the UFC debut card on Fox, as Junior dos Santos knocked out Cain Velasquez to take their heavyweight title. The tactics of that brief encounter are discussed.
The most discussed fight of the night was the third meeting between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. Pacquiao was awarded a highly-controversial majority decision in this one, which many observers believed was a robbery. Again, while boxing had a chance to make a good impression after the 64-second UFC blowout, many people left feeling cheated by the judges and ripped off by those running the sport.
So was Orwell right? That question was answered on this edition of No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: Dr. Margaret Goodman on Next Steps in Anti-Doping Battle
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks about the latest developments in the battle against doping in the combat sports of boxing and mixed martial arts with Dr. Margaret Goodman, a neurologist, the former chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and the medical correspondent for No Holds Barred.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission will be holding a meeting Wednesday, June 9, at the Grant Sawyer State Office Building in Las Vegas, which includes on its agenda "Review of Protocol for Steroid/Drug Testing and Disciplinary Matters." This meeting is open to the public.
We spoke with Dr. Goodman Thursday about this meeting and the lessons to be drawn from the anti-doping procedures used for the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Shane Mosley fight on May 1, where drug-testing was conducted by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) as well as the Nevada commission. We discussed how even this testing by USADA was inadequate, since they stopped blood testing over two weeks before this fight.
Among the many other issues we addressed were the continued refusal of Manny Pacquiao and his camp to accept the international anti-doping procedures; why drug testing for a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight must strictly adhere to the procedures of the World Anti-Doping Agency and include random, unannounced testing up to the fight and right after the fight; the award being given by some boxing writers to Pacquiao as best fighter of the past decade despite his opposition to serious drug testing; why the widespread use of human growth hormone by athletes is both dangerous to their health and difficult to detect; why agencies independent of the various athletic commissions in North America must be used to conduct drug testing; the current role of former BALCO founder and convicted dope distributor Victor Conte, who is now working with anti-doping forces; the role of the media in the fight against doping; and much more.

No Holds Barred: John Fahey of WADA on Boxing, Williams-Cintron Chaos, Pacquiao the Politician
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses a number of issues in boxing, including the need for the sport to adopt Olympic-style anti-doping procedures, and the chaos coming out of the abbreviated Paul Williams-Kermit Cintron fight this past Saturday.
There was an international media conference call Monday, May 10, with John Fahey, the president of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). On it we asked him to comment on the use of WADA procedures for the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Shane Mosley fight, and what can be done to make those standard for professional boxing. He was optimistic that this might be accomplished by the numerous bodies governing boxing.
We next address the recent congressional election campaign in the Philippines by one of the fiercest opponents of such anti-doping procedures, Manny Pacquiao. While we do not yet have official results for that election, we do discuss a report from that campaign which raises interesting concerns about Pacquiao. And we wonder what type of politician Pacquiao, with his stated opposition to the anti-doping procedures used in the Olympics and many other sporting events around the world, will make if he is elected.

No Holds Barred: Mayweather-Mosley Review, Drug Testing, Pacquiao the Politician, Williams-Cintron Preview
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again cuts through all the rubbish by commenting on the dominating win by Floyd Mayweather Jr. over Shane Mosley, what the state-of-the-art drug testing used for this fight showed, the real story behind the run for Congress in the Philippines by Manny Pacquiao, and the sleeper fight scheduled for this Saturday, May 8, between Paul Williams and Kermit Cintron.
This past Saturday, May 1, Floyd Mayweather Jr. made believers out of many of those skeptical about his exceptional boxing skills by thoroughly dominating another future Hall of Fame fighter, Shane Mosley, with a lopsided unanimous decision. We analyze the key aspects and moments of this welterweight fight, which saw Mayweather run his unbeaten streak to 41 fights. We also discuss what this means for the 38-year-old Mosley. And we read a commentary by Dr. Margaret Goodman, a neurologist, the former ringside physician and head of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and the medical correspondent on No Holds Barred, on what the drug-testing in this fight showed.
Just about everyone wants to see Mayweather fight Manny Pacquiao next, but Pacquiao and his camp have thus far refused the calls by Mayweather for Olympic-style drug testing following the protocols of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to create a level playing field. We discuss why the various bodies regulating the combat sports of boxing and mixed martial arts must adopt the WADA protocols, at least in major fights.
We also examine the election campaign Manny Pacquiao is waging for Congress in the Philippines, and with whom he has allied, presidential candidate Manny Villar Jr. of the rightist Nacionalista Party. The election will be held May 10.
According to a report just released by the Yankee Group, a Boston-based consulting firm, "in the next 12 months, 1 in 8 consumers will cut or reduce their pay TV service and get their video elsewhere." We discuss how this is more evidence that the business model of sports like boxing, which is so heavily dependent on revenues from premium and pay-per-view television, is being outstripped by the growth of technology.
This coming Saturday, May 8, however, there should be a good fight on HBO in the U.S. between top junior middleweights Paul Williams (38-1, 27 KOs) and Kermit Cintron (32-2-1, 28 KOs), at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. With all the attention given to Mayweather-Mosley, which will be replayed as part of this telecast, this fight is not getting the attention it deserves.
We spoke with both Paul Williams and Kermit Cintron on a media conference call Monday to learn how they each expect to win this fight. No Holds Barred: John Perretti, Lou DiBella, and Drug Testing
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks, in two separate and spirited interviews, with the legendary matchmaker and martial artist John Perretti, and boxing promoter Lou DiBella, focusing on issues including drug testing in combat sports, the dreadful Pacquiao-Clottey pay-per-view on March 13, and how we view Pacquiao both as a fighter and a person.
Our discussion with Lou DiBella was recorded this Tuesday at Madison Square Garden in New York at the news conference announcing the May 15 Amir Khan-Paulie Malignaggi fight. Our main topic was the lack of credible drug testing in boxing, and the need for athletic commissions to adopt the methods used by the World Anti-Doping Agency, including random, unannounced blood and urine testing. DiBella emphatically called on the Association of Boxing Commissions to update their procedures to protect the clean athletes and catch the dope cheats. He called the lack of uniform health and safety standards for boxing in America "savage". He also plugged his fighter, Paulie Malignaggi, to win May 15. On Thursday afternoon, we spoke with our senior correspondent, John Perretti, the former UFC matchmaker, Extreme Fighting founder, kickboxer, and martial arts legend. He had the misfortune of watching the entire Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey pay-per-view last Saturday, March 13.
The most charitable description he could come up for that show was "goofy". We discussed how this awful show, full of typical boxing mismatches, was actually an advertisement for mixed martial arts. We analyzed the non-effort of Clottey to win, and how once again the likes of promoter Arum and HBO were teaming up to enrich themselves with a pay-per-view while destroying boxing. We also discussed Pacquiao, whom Eddie said he does not trust, calling him "Pacquiao the politician", since he is running for Congress in the Philippines. We spoke of how Pacquiao, with a few official losses and some gift decisions, did not deserve to be named the top boxer of the past decade by supposed boxing journalists. And we called his refusal to take Olympic-style blood testing to detect doping a disgrace. John also briefly commented on the scandal in Japan involving now-former sumo wrestler and Yokozuna Asashoryu, which forced him to quit that sport, and much more.
We also play a brief excerpt from the media conference call of Thursday, March 18, announcing the drug testing program which will be used for the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Shane Mosley fight, which takes place May 1 in Las Vegas, Nevada. On that call were Travis T. Tygart, CEO of USADA (U.S. Anti-Doping Agency); Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions; and Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. Both fighters will be subject to random and unannounced blood and urine testing according to the protocols of the World Anti-Doping Agency, which USADA follows. We also rip the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which, after all this, still refuses to update its drug testing procedures.

No Holds Barred: Strikeforce, Boxing, Doping, Wrestling, Grappling

No Holds Barred: Dr. Margaret Goodman on Mayweather-Pacquiao Cancellation and Future of Drug Testing
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Dr. Margaret Goodman about the cancellation of the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao fight after the two camps failed to agree on how to conduct the prefight drug testing, and what should be the future of drug testing for the combat sports. Dr. Goodman is a neurologist, the former chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and the medical correspondent for No Holds Barred.
Among the many topics we discussed was why the last-minute compromise offered by the Mayweather camp, for an end to blood testing 14 days before the fight, would have been inadequate in preventing dope cheating. We discussed various methods widely used by dope cheats, including the use of EPO, and how many athletes beat even the current random tests. We stressed the need for regulatory and sanctioning bodies in the combat sports to update their antiquated procedures if they are serious about dealing with this issue. We also discussed the use of performance enhancing drugs in other sports such as baseball.
We discussed how the collapse of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is yet another milestone in the collapse of boxing, and how other sports like mixed martial arts are benefiting from it. But we also discussed how the issue of doping in mixed martial arts is not being properly addressed and must be, lest that sport sooner or later suffers a similar fate as boxing. Among the many topics we discussed was why the last-minute compromise offered by the Mayweather camp, for an end to blood testing 14 days before the fight, would have been inadequate in preventing dope cheating. We discussed various methods widely used by dope cheats, including the use of EPO, and how many athletes beat even the current random tests. We stressed the need for regulatory and sanctioning bodies in the combat sports to update their antiquated procedures if they are serious about dealing with this issue. We also discussed the use of performance enhancing drugs in other sports such as baseball.
We discussed how the collapse of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is yet another milestone in the collapse of boxing, and how other sports like mixed martial arts are benefiting from it. But we also discussed how the issue of doping in mixed martial arts is not being properly addressed and must be, lest that sport sooner or later suffers a similar fate as boxing. No Holds Barred: Travis Tygart of U.S. Anti-Doping Agency on Mayweather-Pacquiao and Drug Testing
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the issue of drug testing and the apparently cancelled Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao fight with Travis Tygart, the chief executive officer of USADA, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.
USADA, which sees its mission as to "preserve the value and integrity of athletic competition through just initiatives that prevent, deter and detect violations of true sport", was initially approached to provide information about drug testing to the organizers of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. USADA is the official anti-doping agency for Olympic, Pan American, and Paralympic sport in the U.S.
According to numerous news reports, plans to hold this fight March 13 were scrapped when the Pacquiao camp refused to agree to the demands of the Mayweather camp for Olympic-style, random blood testing of both fighters for banned substances.
In a lengthy interview, Travis Tygart explains why only conducting urine testing for banned and dangerous substances is ineffective, why blood testing is needed to test for substances like human growth hormone, and why this is necessary to protect the clean athletes while catching the dope cheats. We discuss the need for random, out-of-competition testing, as well as debunk the various excuses given against blood testing, such as it weakening an athlete, the expense of the test, their safety, etc.
"Our clean athletes are demanding for more testing," he stated in this interview.
Defending the rights of these clean athletes is paramount, which is why all supporters of honest sport should also demand that these state-of-the-art testing procedures be utilized in professional sports worldwide.
