No Holds Barred: Sergio Martinez, Darren Barker, Lou DiBella, Kristal Hart, Khan-Judah Critique

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with middleweight champion Sergio Martinez and Darren Barker about their October 1 fight in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
We spoke with both Martinez and Barker at the kickoff news conference for this fight held Wednesday, July 20, in New York. We also spoke with Martinez's promoter Lou DiBella about this fight and why none of the major sanctioning bodies recognize Martinez as middleweight champion, even though Martinez is the linear champion and has not lost since capturing the title last year against Kelly Pavlik. Plus, we spoke with TV host Kristal Hart about this fight and how it epitomizes both the good and bad in boxing.
We open the show with a critique of the Amir Khan-Zab Judah fight, won by Khan with a fifth-round knockout on Saturday, July 23, in Las Vegas. While Khan was dominating the entire fight, the stoppage was controversial since what was ruled as the knockout punch appeared to be below the line separating legal and illegal blows which the referee specified in the prefight instructions. And we criticize the promotion for this fight.

No Holds Barred: Pat Miletich, Ken Hershman, Lou DiBella

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents interviews with MMA legend and Showtime announcer Pat Miletich, Showtime Sports executive Ken Hershman, and boxing promoter Lou DiBella. These interviews were conducted Wednesday, June 1, in New York at the final news conference for the Carl Froch-Glen Johnson Super Six World Boxing Classic semifinal fight. That fight takes place Saturday, June 4, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and will be televised in the U.S. on Showtime and in the U.K. on Sky Sports.
One of the pioneers of mixed martial arts, Pat Miletich is now primarily focusing on his duties as an announcer and in other ventures. We discussed those, including his role announcing the upcoming July 8 M-1 Global card on Showtime, as well as Strikeforce Challengers events. We discussed the unbeaten heavyweight Guram Gugenishvili, who headlines the July 8 M-1 Global card. We also discussed the impact that the Miletich style of striving to be a well-rounded fighter has had on MMA, his experience in the old Extreme Fighting company, and much more.
Ken Hershman, the Showtime Sports Executive Vice President and General Manager, had had a very busy year with a full slate of boxing and MMA cards. We spoke about the importance of these sports to Showtime, his thoughts on the future of Strikeforce and Showtime, the importance of events like the July 8 M-1 Global show on Showtime, the July 30 fight on Showtime between MMA legends Fedor Emelianenko and Dan Henderson, the need for the New York politicians to legalize MMA, and more.
Lou DiBella also has a busy schedule. Besides promoting Glen Johnson in this June 4 fight, he is co-promoting with Gary Shaw back-to-back boxing cards on June 10 and 11 called Boricua Invasion I and II. These cards, held the same weekend as the Puerto Rican Day Parade, will both take place at the Roseland Ballroom in New York and showcase up-and-coming Puerto Rican fighters. Boricua Invasion I will air live on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights, while Boricua Boxing II will be televised live on Showtime on ShoBox. We discussed these cards, why boxing has remained so popular in Puerto Rico and with Puerto Ricans elsewhere, the prospects of Glen Johnson in the June 4 fight, and more.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti, Lou DiBella, and Drug Testing
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks, in two separate and spirited interviews, with the legendary matchmaker and martial artist John Perretti, and boxing promoter Lou DiBella, focusing on issues including drug testing in combat sports, the dreadful Pacquiao-Clottey pay-per-view on March 13, and how we view Pacquiao both as a fighter and a person.
Our discussion with Lou DiBella was recorded this Tuesday at Madison Square Garden in New York at the news conference announcing the May 15 Amir Khan-Paulie Malignaggi fight. Our main topic was the lack of credible drug testing in boxing, and the need for athletic commissions to adopt the methods used by the World Anti-Doping Agency, including random, unannounced blood and urine testing. DiBella emphatically called on the Association of Boxing Commissions to update their procedures to protect the clean athletes and catch the dope cheats. He called the lack of uniform health and safety standards for boxing in America "savage". He also plugged his fighter, Paulie Malignaggi, to win May 15. On Thursday afternoon, we spoke with our senior correspondent, John Perretti, the former UFC matchmaker, Extreme Fighting founder, kickboxer, and martial arts legend. He had the misfortune of watching the entire Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey pay-per-view last Saturday, March 13.
The most charitable description he could come up for that show was "goofy". We discussed how this awful show, full of typical boxing mismatches, was actually an advertisement for mixed martial arts. We analyzed the non-effort of Clottey to win, and how once again the likes of promoter Arum and HBO were teaming up to enrich themselves with a pay-per-view while destroying boxing. We also discussed Pacquiao, whom Eddie said he does not trust, calling him "Pacquiao the politician", since he is running for Congress in the Philippines. We spoke of how Pacquiao, with a few official losses and some gift decisions, did not deserve to be named the top boxer of the past decade by supposed boxing journalists. And we called his refusal to take Olympic-style blood testing to detect doping a disgrace. John also briefly commented on the scandal in Japan involving now-former sumo wrestler and Yokozuna Asashoryu, which forced him to quit that sport, and much more.
We also play a brief excerpt from the media conference call of Thursday, March 18, announcing the drug testing program which will be used for the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Shane Mosley fight, which takes place May 1 in Las Vegas, Nevada. On that call were Travis T. Tygart, CEO of USADA (U.S. Anti-Doping Agency); Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions; and Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. Both fighters will be subject to random and unannounced blood and urine testing according to the protocols of the World Anti-Doping Agency, which USADA follows. We also rip the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which, after all this, still refuses to update its drug testing procedures.
