No Holds Barred: The Improbable Fates of Haye-Bellew and Thurman-Garcia
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the two main events which took place Saturday, March 4, and their improbable endings.
In the U.K., WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew scored a dramatic eleventh-round TKO over the heavy favorite David Haye in a heavyweight fight. Despite many expecting a quick knockout by Haye, Bellew acquitted himself well as the rounds went on. But Haye's right leg gave way in the sixth round and he could barely stand on it for the second half of the fight, before being knocked out of the ring by Bellew. The fight was built up by a series of vile and vulgar statements by Haye, but both men embraced after their battle and noted their respect for each other's courage. This fight took place in London's O2 Arena and was shown live in the U.K. on Sky Sports Box Office.
In the U.S., the long awaited welterweight title unification fight between two unbeaten beltholders, WBA champ Keith Thurman and WBC champ Danny Garcia, took place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, and was shown live in the U.S. on CBS and in the U.K. on BoxNation. While Thurman won a split decision, which most observers said was a clearcut victory for him, the fight had few fireworks or dramatic moments. While the initial ratings indicate that it was the most-viewed fight on American television this year, the question arises whether or not this fight and broadcast will bring more fans back into boxing.

No Holds Barred: A Splendid Day for Boxing

After a buildup marked by much trash talk and the opposition of the British Boxing Board of Control to this matchup, David Haye knocked out Dereck Chisora in the fifth round of their heavyweight fight, held at Upton Park, London. Both fighters congratulated each other after the fight.
In an upset, Danny "Swift" Garcia stopped Amir Khan in the fourth round of their fight in Las Vegas, Nevada, to unify two of the 140-pound titles. Khan had originally been scheduled for a rematch with Lamont Peterson in May, but Peterson had tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug in a prefight test conducted by VADA, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association.
Despite all the controversy leading up to both of these fights, we explain why, when the battles actually began in the ring, the results were good for the sport of boxing and for the fans.

No Holds Barred: Charles Farrell Deconstructs Haye-Valuev
Haye won this bout with a majority decision, but this fight was so dreadful and had such little action that during it, Sky Sports announcer and former lightweight world champion Jim Watt wondered, "Do you score the round on one punch?"
We thus deconstruct this fight with Charles Farrell, and bemoan not only what so much of heavyweight boxing has become, but also cast doubt on much of what was said regarding this fight. We discuss why Haye chose such a defensive game plan, why Haye was able to win a relatively close decision in Germany where so many fighters have been robbed, the likelihood of Haye now fighting one of the Klitschkos, the presentation of the fight in the arena, the significance of holding such a fight in Nuremburg, the superiority of the announcing on Sky Sports compared to that on the American networks, how Haye has shrewdly positioned himself in the heavyweight division, the return of John Ruiz, why the boxing establishment has had enough of Valuev, and much more.
You will not hear this type of brutally frank analysis elsewhere, so make sure to check out this edition of No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: Charles Farrell on Boxing in Asia, Europe, and America
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our colleague and correspondent, the award-winning boxing writer and musician Charles Farrell.
We began our lengthy discussion by focusing on the curious case of matchmaking in the title fight taking place May 26 in Shanghai, China, between the veteran WBC flyweight champion Daisuke Naito (34-2-3, 22 KOs) of Japan and the inexperienced Xiong Zhao Zhong (12-1-1, 8 KOs) of China. This is reported to be the first time a boxer from China will fight for a world belt from a major sanctioning body. Xiong, however, has only one win against a fighter with a winning record, who was just 1-0, and lost a regional light flyweight title fight in November to a 13-6 fighter. Nonetheless, once Naito agreed to fight in China, Xiong was given this world flyweight title shot. Welcome to the world of professional boxing, People's Republic of China!
We also discussed fights in Europe and America including the July 18 fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas and their media tour this week, the June 13 welterweight fight in New York between Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey, the June 20 heavyweight fight in Germany between David Haye and Wladimir Klitschko, the little-anticipated May 30 heavyweight fight in Finland between Nikolai Valuev and Ruslan Chagaev, the May 16 fight in California between super middleweights Andre Ward and Edison Miranda, and more.
We also read an e-mail about the "One World Champion" video sent by none other than former heavyweight champion of the world, George Foreman. And we comment on the recent writing awards announced by the Boxing Writers Association of America, and how the woeful state of boxing journalism hurts the sport.
This will be the last edition of No Holds Barred until after the May 23 Art of War Fighting Championship mixed martial arts card in Beijing, China, which we will be attending, so now is a good time also to catch up on those episodes of the show where we discussed this important event.

SecondsOut Radio: Ricky Hatton, David Haye, Future of British Boxing
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman focuses on the top fighters in boxing in the UK today. We compare where the careers of Joe Calzaghe, Junior Witter, Amir Khan, Ricky Hatton, David Haye, and Carl Froch were one year ago with where they are today. And we comment on the thrilling come-from-behind 12th-round TKO victory Carl Froch scored over Jermain Taylor this past Saturday night, April 25.
Ricky Hatton, of course, will be facing Manny Pacquiao, regarded by most as the current pound-for-pound king, this coming Saturday night, May 2, in Las Vegas. This fight will take place at 140 pounds, where Hatton is presently regarded as the best fighter in the world. We spoke with a confident Ricky Hatton on a media conference call this past week to get his take on this fight.
David Haye, the former cruiserweight champion who relinquished his belts in that division to move up to heavyweight, will get his wish for a crack at a heavyweight title when he faces the top fighter in that weight class, Wladimir Klitschko, June 20 in Germany. David Haye was in New York this past week for a news conference, and we caught up with him there for some very poignant comments.

This video was produced by Ian and Eddie, and focuses on the present absurd situation where there are four heavyweight boxing champions of the world. SecondsOut Radio: Marquez-Pacquiao 2 Preview, Weekend Review
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie
Goldman begins by reviewing this past weekend's major fights.
We discuss the WBC heavyweight title fight won by Samuel Peter (30-1, 23 KOs) over Oleg Maskaev (34-6, 26 KOs) by a sixth-round stoppage, and the lightweight title fight won by Nate Campbell (32-5-1, 25 KOs) over Juan Diaz (33-1, 17 KOs) by a split decision in Cancun, Mexico. The comments of the announcers on HBO, which telecast these fights in the U.S., are particularly criticized here. We also review the cruiserweight unification bout won by David Haye (21-1, 20 KOs) over Enzo Maccarinelli (28-2, 21 KOs) by a second-round TKO in London, UK, telecast in the U.S. on Showtime and in the UK on Setanta.
This coming Saturday, March 15, the long-awaited rematch between WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (48-3-1, 35 KOs) and Manny Pacquiao (45-3-2, 34 KOs) finally is set to take place. In their first bout, held at featherweight on May 8, 2004, Pacquiao dropped Marquez thrice in the first round, but Marquez recovered and was able to outbox Pacquiao for much of the remainder of the fight. The result was a controversial split draw. Now they will meet again in a bout in Las Vegas which will be shown in the U.S. on HBO Pay-Per-View.
We spoke with Manny Pacquiao and his trainer and confidant Freddie Roach about what to expect March 15 on a media teleconference call this past week, and have that discussion for you here.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Mike Chapman on Frank Gotch Day and When Pro Wrestling Was Real
On this special edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman speaks with noted wrestling historian and author Mike Chapman, who is the executive director of the Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum in Waterloo, Iowa.
April 3 marks the one hundredth anniversary of the world heavyweight wrestling championship match between Frank Gotch and George Hackenschmidt in Chicago. This match, won by Gotch, took place in an era when professional wrestling was still a real sport.
To commemorate this anniversary, April 3, 2008, is being celebrated as Frank Gotch Day in Gotch's hometown of Humboldt, Iowa, and in Waterloo and at the Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum. The Governor of Iowa, Chet Culver, has also declared April 3, 2008, as Frank Gotch Day statewide.
In an in-depth discussion, we speak with Mike Chapman about the legend of Frank Gotch, how pro wrestling was largely real in Gotch's day and why it changed, what lessons can be learned for wrestling from this, the celebration planned for Frank Gotch Day, the Museum's co-sponsoring the annual WIN Magazine Memorabilia Show at the 2008 NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championship March 20-22 in St. Louis, and more.
