No Holds Barred: The Improbable Fates of Haye-Bellew and Thurman-Garcia
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the two main events which took place Saturday, March 4, and their improbable endings.
In the U.K., WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew scored a dramatic eleventh-round TKO over the heavy favorite David Haye in a heavyweight fight. Despite many expecting a quick knockout by Haye, Bellew acquitted himself well as the rounds went on. But Haye's right leg gave way in the sixth round and he could barely stand on it for the second half of the fight, before being knocked out of the ring by Bellew. The fight was built up by a series of vile and vulgar statements by Haye, but both men embraced after their battle and noted their respect for each other's courage. This fight took place in London's O2 Arena and was shown live in the U.K. on Sky Sports Box Office.
In the U.S., the long awaited welterweight title unification fight between two unbeaten beltholders, WBA champ Keith Thurman and WBC champ Danny Garcia, took place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, and was shown live in the U.S. on CBS and in the U.K. on BoxNation. While Thurman won a split decision, which most observers said was a clearcut victory for him, the fight had few fireworks or dramatic moments. While the initial ratings indicate that it was the most-viewed fight on American television this year, the question arises whether or not this fight and broadcast will bring more fans back into boxing.

No Holds Barred: Keith Thurman, Danny Garcia, and the Honor of Champions
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia about their welterweight title unification fight.
In addition, the issue of honor and the lack of honor of many boxing champions, including the potential implications of this past Saturday's postfight hotel lobby brawl involving Deontay Wilder, and the WBC's call for a boxing code of ethics to be implemented, are discussed.
WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) and WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia (33-0, 19 KOs) fight this Saturday, March 4, in the main event of a card billed as Showtime Championship Boxing on CBS, presented by Premier Boxing Champions, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. This card will be shown live in the U.S. on CBS and in the U.K. on BoxNation.
We spoke with both Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia on a recent media conference call.

No Holds Barred: Thurman-Porter and Joshua-Breazeale Analyses, Plus Wilder, Joshua, Hearn on Doping
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses this wild, busy weekend in boxing.
Welterweights Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter put on a fight of the year candidate at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, shown on CBS in the U.S. and Sky Sports in the U.K., with the unbeaten Thurman taking a unanimous decision and retaining his WBA belt.
IBF heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua, hoped by many to be the next big superstar in boxing, needed seven rounds to dispatch an overmatched but courageous Dominic Breazeale, in a fight at The O2 in London and shown live on Sky Sports Box Office in the U.K. and on Showtime in the U.S.
What these fights demonstrated about each of these fighters, what is next for them, the move towards unification tournaments in both the welterweight and heavyweight divisions, and more are discussed.
The plague of doping is a major issue in all sports these days, including boxing. Our colleague Chris Baldwin got comments from WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder about this issue this past week in Los Angeles. We also have an excerpt from the Joshua-Breazeale prefight conference call where Joshua and his promoter, Eddie Hearn, addressed this issue and called for lifetime bans for boxers who test positive for PEDs. We also comment on the WBC investigation into Alexander Povetkin's alleged use of the banned substance meldonium, the allegations which were just published that Tyson Fury used the steroid nandrolone last year, which he denies, and much, much more.

No Holds Barred: Keith Thurman, Shawn Porter, Anthony Joshua, Dominic Breazeale, PBC Review
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews this coming Saturday's Keith Thurman-Shawn Porter welterweight title fight and Anthony Joshua-Dominic Breazeale heavyweight title fight, and reviews this past Saturday's Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on NBC card featuring Joe Smith Jr.'s stunning first-round TKO over Andrzej Fonfara, and Rau'shee Warren's majority decision win over Juan Carlos Payano in a bantamweight title rematch.
This Saturday, June 25, WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) puts both his belt and his unbeaten record on the line against former IBF champion Shawn Porter (26-1, 16 KOs) in what is expected to be both an action-packed and highly competitive fight. This fight takes place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and will be televised live in the U.S. on CBS and in the U.K. on Sky Sports.
We spoke with both Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter on a recent media conference call. While each fighter predicted victory, they agreed on one thing: this fight will not go to the judges.
Also on Saturday, June 25, the IBF heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua (16-0, 16 KOs) and the challenger Dominic Breazeale (17-0, 15 KOs) headline a card at The O2 in London, which will be shown live on Sky Sports Box Office in the U.K. The Joshua-Breazeale fight will also be shown live on Showtime in the U.S. We spoke with both Anthony Joshua and Dominic Breazeale on Monday's conference call, and got their predictions as well.

No Holds Barred: The Fight Against Boxing Misinformation and Disinformation
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the misinformation in the boxing media about this coming Saturday's PBC on ESPN Thurman-Collazo card; the idiotic over-reporting in the mainstream media about what should have been a footnote with laughter on one of the alphabet soup groups stripping Floyd Mayweather of its belt; the failure of much of the boxing media to notice that this past Saturday's Jamie Conlan-Junior Granados battle in Dublin was a thrilling fight of the year candidate; and more.

No Holds Barred: Keith Thurman, Luis Collazo, PBC at Mid-Year
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (25-0, 21 KOs) and former welterweight champion Luis Collazo (36-6, 19 KOs), who fight Saturday, July 11, at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida. This fight will be telecast live in the U.S. on ESPN, and will be the first on that network for the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) series.
We spoke with both Keith Thurman and Luis Collazo on Tuesday's media conference call.
We also evaluate the progress of the PBC in the first half of 2015, and conclude that while a number of errors have been made, overall PBC deserves a grade of B or B-, with many more positive accomplishments than negative ones. Still, PBC needs to do more in terms of making stars out of its fighters and creating buzz, as well as utilizing the Internet and social media better than they do now.
While PBC has been running live boxing shows on network and basic cable channels almost every week since March, promoters like Top Rank and Golden Boy, who could not get such exposure despite being around far longer than PBC, have opted to sue PBC, instead of changing their ways. We discuss why these suits are mostly baseless, although the issue of PBC acting as both a promoter and manager for fighters, especially when TV plays such a key role in the business of boxing, will have to be addressed.

No Holds Barred: Charles Farrell on PBC on NBC Boxing, Mayweather-Pacquiao, and the State of Boxing
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with our colleague, correspondent, and award-winning boxing writer, Charles Farrell, who is also co-editor of The Boxing Standard.
The return of boxing to network TV in the U.S. and the announcement that the long-awaited mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will take place May 2 have sparked much interest and discussion about the state of boxing.
Saturday's debut PBC (Premier Boxing Champions) on NBC show featured an exciting decision victory by Keith Thurman over Robert Guerrero and a not-so-exciting decision victory by Adrien Broner over John Molina Jr.
According to the Nielsen Ratings, the PBC on NBC telecast averaged 3.4 million viewers, ranking as the most-watched professional boxing broadcast in 17 years (Oscar De La Hoya’s Fight Night on FOX, 5.9 million, Mon., March 23, 1998). Viewership increased every half hour through the telecast and peaked at 4.2 million from 10:30-11 p.m. ET during the final six rounds of the Keith Thurman-Robert Guerrero fight. The PBC on NBC also led NBC to a Saturday primetime victory among adults 18-49, with a 1.08 rating in that demographic. Also, according to NBC Sports, more than 575,000 minutes (576,435) of PBC on NBC coverage was live streamed via NBC Sports Live Extra to desktops, tablets and mobile devices. The show thus has to be considered a ratings success.
We spoke with Charles Farrell by phone Sunday.
"I do think the idea of making competitive fights is a very good idea. I think star-building is a very good idea," he said.
"There's probably interest in trying to resurrect Adrien Broner. I dont think that that happened, and I think maybe they have to think about what to do with Adrien Broner at this point."
He continued, "But they probably did pretty well by Keith Thurman. And my guess is that people who were watching who were casual fans will be inclined to watch the next one. So you give it a passing grade, and I would say at this point we sort of have to wait and see."
As for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, where Mayweather puts his 47-0 record on the line, we discussed potential outcomes, including one possibility that the fight will end in a highly controversial and disputed decision, thus leading to much antipathy for boxing but also a highly lucrative rematch.
We also discussed the announcing and overall production of the debut PBC on NBC show, the need to present boxing "as boxing" on TV, the decision loss by Chinese fighter Zou Shiming to IBF flyweight champion Amnat Ruenroeng of Thailand in Macao in China, why boxing seems to rebound after each period of decline, and much, much more.

With the involvement of the Cleveland Clinic, each boxer who competes in a PBC bout will benefit from evaluations by staff physicians from the clinic. And the PBC series will support the clinic's important Professional Fighter’s Brain Health Study."
