No Holds Barred: Kizer and A-Rod Out, Jessica Aguilar-Alida Gray at WSOF 8
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman opens with a commentary on the resignation of Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer, how this relates to the suspension of baseball drug cheat Alex Rodriguez, how most sports and those regulated by North American athletic commissions are moving in opposite directions on the issue of doping, and the continuing dangers of concussions and brain injuries in combat sports.
On Saturday, January 18, American Top Team fighter Jessica Aguilar, who is the world's top-ranked MMA fighter in the women's 115-pound division, will make her debut in the World Series of Fighting promotion. Her opponent will be Alida Gray, 4-0 in MMA, in a bout for World Series of Fighting's inaugural women's strawweight title. This fight will be on the WSOF 8 card at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, and will be telecast live in the U.S. on NBC Sports Network.
We had a chance to ask questions of both Jessica Aguilar and Alida Gray on this past week's WSOF 8 media conference call, and play the audio from that discussion.
In addition, also discussed are the continuing failures of the sport of wrestling to market and promote the sport, especially through television, and the emulation of many in combat sports of the worst elements in them, rather than striving for positioning them as real sports.

No Holds Barred: Dr. Margaret Goodman on Concussions, Combat Sports, CTE, Doping, and Horses

Our lengthy interview takes on some of the most difficult but pressing issues facing the combat sports, and even contact sports like American football.
What can be done to limit further the widespread doping in combat sports and the use of dangerous and banned substances? Why are these banned substances, such as anabolic steroids, so dangerous?
What will be the effect on these sports of very recent research, which Dr. Goodman calls "earth-shattering", regarding the dangers caused by concussions and the onset of the brain disease CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy? Can any combat or contact sport be considered relatively safe, or become relatively safe, for the health of the athletes? Given all this new research, how can it be argued that combat sports, including mixed martial arts, be legalized in jurisdictions like New York where it presently is not? And why are safety and doping standards better in the U.S. for race horses than human athletes?
We address head-on these and related issues which one day may threaten the very existence of these sports.

No Holds Barred: Dr. Margaret Goodman on Doping, Fighter Health and Safety, and What Must Be Done
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Dr. Margaret Goodman, a neurologist and former chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Dr. Goodman is now also the medical correspondent for No Holds Barred, and we are very proud to be associated with her.
This lengthy interview, conducted March 12, first was posted on SecondsOut Radio in two parts. Here we have it in its entirety.
The topics include why certain substances such as steroids and marijuana are dangerous to the health of fighters and are thus banned in the combat sports. We also discuss many other issues related to the health and safety of fighters, especially what can be done to improve the health and safety measures in the combat sports, and what role a national boxing commission in the U.S. should play.

SecondsOut Radio: Dr. Margaret Goodman, Part Two
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins with a few comments on why fights like the Vitali Klitschko-Juan Carlos Gomez WBC title bout, held Saturday, March 21, and won by Klitschko by a ninth-round TKO, are not good for the beleaguered heavyweight division. We also comment on the issue of Internet "piracy" and who the real pirates are. This is where millionaires put on lousy matchups which have so little appeal that the free networks do not want to buy them, then try to sell them to the average fans as pay-per-views, and then hire fancy lawyers who threaten to sue individuals who watch them on unauthorized web sites.
Next, we return to the second and final part of our lengthy interview with Dr. Margaret Goodman, a neurologist and former chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. After laying out in the first part some of the health and safety problems such as the use of steroids and other harmful, banned substances, we now discuss what can be done to improve the health and safety measures in boxing, and what role a national boxing commission in the U.S. should play.

SecondsOut Radio: Khan-Barrera Controversy, Dr. Margaret Goodman Part One
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on the fifth-round technical decision victory by Amir Khan over Marco Antonio Barrera Saturday, March 14, in Manchester, England. We reflect on what this fight did and did not prove regarding Khan's technique and chin in the wake of his first-round defeat last year by then-little-known Breidis Prescott. We discuss what questions were and were not answered regarding the legendary but aging Barrera, whose performances of late cannot be analyzed without bringing up the question of whether he should retire or not. We focus on the controversial ending to this fight, which was only stopped in the fifth round due to a cut from an accidental head clash in the first round which left an open gash on Barrera's forehead. And we ask whether or not this fight, had it been held outside England, would likely have been stopped prior to the fifth round, which thus would have resulted in a no decision under the unified rules of boxing.
Next, we begin a lengthy interview with Dr. Margaret Goodman, a neurologist and former chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. In the first part of this interview, the topics include why certain substances such as steroids and marijuana are dangerous to the health of fighters and are thus banned. We also discuss many other issues related to the health and safety of fighters.

Peter-McCline A Go, Eddie Goldman on "Joey Reynolds Show"
The Friday edition of the New York Daily News ran a story quoting an unnamed source alleging that McCline "received more than $12,000 worth of steroids, human growth hormone and related drugs over a 21-month period" from March 2005 to December 2006.
McCline, however, has not been indicted, arrested, tried, or convicted for any of these charges. Plus, like Sam Peter, he will have to undergo both prefight and postfight doping tests by the New York State Athletic Commission.
Thus, the fight is still on.
We discussed this late Friday night/early Saturday morning on the "Joey Reynolds Show" on WOR radio in New York.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Dr. Margaret Goodman on Steroids in MMA
On this week's special edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Dr. Margaret Goodman, a neurologist and former chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
In the wake of the latest round of dope cheats being caught in the mixed martial arts, we discuss what fighters, promoters, and athletic commissions must do to combat this scourge. We discuss what a national athletic commission in the US could do for mixed martial arts. Dr. Goodman also outlines the medical reasons why toxic drugs such as steroids are so dangerous to the health of fighters. We discuss what the role of the combat sports media should be.
This discussion was the latter part of an interview with Dr. Goodman, the first part of which was on SecondsOut Radio where we discussed a brewing scandal in boxing, which she characterized as boxing's Watergate. That scandal involves a recent report in The New York Times, which documented numerous cases where boxers had been given questionable medical clearance to fight, and even had fraudulent medical forms submitted on their behalf to various state athletic commissions for supposed medical examinations of them. Several of these fighters later died because of injuries suffered in those fights.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Renzo Gracie on Naturalism, Kurt Otto on IFL Plans
On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the relevance of recent events regarding doping in the sports world for the combat sports. Also raised is the need for a summit to address the rampant dope-cheating in the drug-soaked sport of mixed martial arts.
We next speak with mixed martial arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Renzo Gracie. We discuss his family's philosophy of naturalism and how that stands in opposition to the current prevailing drug culture.
We also speak with Kurt Otto, the co-founder and commissioner of the International Fight League (IFL). We discuss the IFL's plans for a Grand Prix tournament to crown individual champions in five weight classes, and other issues. We also discuss his announcement that the IFL will begin taking its own anti-doping measures next season.

NO HOLDS BARRED: How to Fight the Dope Cheats
On this special edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman discusses the latest series of dope cheating scandals in mixed martial arts, the pros and cons of the CBS Sportsline article by Zach Arnold called "Steroids, street drugs a problem in MMA, too", and the need for all those who oppose doping to support the efforts of the World Anti-Doping Agency and push for universal adoption of its policies.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Come Clean, Royce Gracie
On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman makes a public but personal appeal to MMA and Jiu-Jitsu legend Royce Gracie, who fought on the June 2 K-1 Dynamite card in Los Angeles and tested positive for steroid use: Come clean, Royce Gracie.
Here is the full statement regarding Royce Gracie issued Monday, June 18, 2007, by the California State Athletic Commission:
For immediate release:
As a result of the various inquiries that we have received, the California State Athletic Commission contacted the laboratory that performed the testing on Mr. Royce Gracie's anabolic agent/masking agent sample and obtained detailed information regarding the test.
A normal person could have a level of 2 ng/mL of Nandrolone that the human body could potentially produce and an athlete that has just completed rigorous physical exercise could have a level of 6 ng/mL.
We received a written response from the laboratory's Director of Science and Technology confirming the positive "A" sample and positive "B" sample.
Both samples provided by Mr. Gracie had a level of over 50 ng/mL and we were informed that the level itself was so elevated that it would not register on the laboratory's calibrator.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact Armando Garcia, Executive Officer.
