No Holds Barred: Jessica Aguilar, Free Agent
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with the world's top-ranked MMA fighter in the women's 115-pound division, American Top Team fighter Jessica Aguilar.
A surprising announcement was made this past Monday by World Series of Fighting (WSOF), where she had been women's strawweight champion and had not lost a fight, that she was being released from the final fight of her contract "so that she can ideally pursue competition where it is strongest in her weight division."
Now a free agent, we spoke with Jessica Aguilar by phone Thursday about her plans.
Calling the WSOF people "awesome" and indicating that this was an amicable parting, she said that in her stay there, "It was hard to find opponents." While they still did find her opponents, and she had won all three fights in WSOF, she has not been booked since November and had no fight planned there.
"I just wanted to fight top-level opponents at my weight class," she said. "The ultimate goal is to be the best fighter out there at 115 pounds, and for me to continue proving that, I believe that I have to step up," to which, she added, WSOF management agreed.
"Now I'm a free agent," she said.
"I plan on becoming a UFC champion, because the talent there of athletes they have, the top females in my division. So that's my plan, Eddie."
She did note that as we spoke, she had not signed with any MMA organization, and could also pursue other options.
We also discussed why her focus on signing with a new organization has meant that she cannot participate in the upcoming 2015 ADCC Submission Fighting World Championships, August 28-30 in Sao Paulo, Brazil; her many community activities, including plans for this year's LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) Pride events in June; and much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with the world's top-ranked MMA fighter in the women's 115-pound division, and the WSOF women's strawweight champion, American Top Team fighter Jessica Aguilar.
Now with a record of 18-4, her next fight will be at WSOF 15 on November 15 when she defends her title against Brazilian fighter Kalindra Faria, who has a record of 15-3-1 and is unbeaten in the last three years. WSOF 15 takes place at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida, and will be shown live in the U.S. for free on NBC Sports Network.
We spoke with Jessica Aguilar by phone Wednesday.
While this is easily the biggest fight of Kalindra Faria's career, Jessica Aguilar is not taking her lightly.
"She's very experienced. She has a great record. And again, this is an athlete that a lot of people don't know about. And it's always good to challenge myself with the best opponents possible. So it's going to be a great matchup," she said. "She has wins via submission and stoppage. So It's going to be another good fight."
We also discussed her community activities, including her work with GLAAD for the October 16 Spirit Day, which is an anti-bullying event that shows support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth. She also works with the Pride Center in South Florida and the Miami Children's Hospital.

She has just successfully defended her title with a dominating five-round unanimous decision over Japanese veteran MMA fighter and kickboxer Emi "The Kamikaze Angel" Fujino, who has never lost in MMA by submission or knockout/TKO. This fight took place at WSOF 10 on June 21 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and was telecast live in the U.S. on NBC Sports Network.

While she is happy with her commanding victory, she did indicate that she had hoped to be the first to submit Emi Fujino.
"I need to get stronger and I need to work more on my wrestling and jiu-jitsu," she said.
"Again, I'm back to work and sharpening up those tools. But I'm confident that I'll get better. In each fight that I want to do now from now on for my career, I want to see a different fighter, a more advanced, a more intelligent [fighter]. And I just want to continue showcasing that I'm a better fighter, every fight, from now on."
We discussed how this fight ended up mostly standing, how she "grew" because of this fight, her plans to compete in more grappling events, her work with youth, the support she has received from the LGBT community, and much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with the world's top-ranked MMA fighter in the women's 115-pound division, and the WSOF women's strawweight champion, American Top Team fighter Jessica Aguilar.
Her debut fight with the World Series of Fighting was on January 18 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. There she captured WSOF's inaugural women's strawweight title by defeating Alida Gray by submission with an arm triangle choke at 2:45 of the first round.
We spoke with Jessica Aguilar by phone Sunday.
Having fought in MMA professionally now for eight years, she said that she expects to be fighting for about five more years.
"My goal and my plan is to go out as a champion," she said. "That's what I'm going to do."
Noted for her jiu-jitsu and grappling, she also would like to resume competition on the mat.
"After that, or in-between that, I still want to compete in jiu-jitsu, absolutely," she said. "I went back to training and I'm doing more of that. So I would love to start competing in the grappling arena as well."
Besides fighting and training, she is very involved with many community organizations in south Florida, and plans to do even more than she has already. She is a motivational speaker for the anti-bullying organization Sweethearts and Heroes. She is involved with the Miami Children's Hospital. And she works with the Pride Center in Wilton Manors, Florida, which serves the LGBTQ communities and friends and neighbors in south Florida.
We also discussed when she expects that her next fight will take place, her good experiences working with WSOF, why working with WSOF was the right decision for her, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Kizer and A-Rod Out, Jessica Aguilar-Alida Gray at WSOF 8
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman opens with a commentary on the resignation of Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer, how this relates to the suspension of baseball drug cheat Alex Rodriguez, how most sports and those regulated by North American athletic commissions are moving in opposite directions on the issue of doping, and the continuing dangers of concussions and brain injuries in combat sports.
On Saturday, January 18, American Top Team fighter Jessica Aguilar, who is the world's top-ranked MMA fighter in the women's 115-pound division, will make her debut in the World Series of Fighting promotion. Her opponent will be Alida Gray, 4-0 in MMA, in a bout for World Series of Fighting's inaugural women's strawweight title. This fight will be on the WSOF 8 card at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, and will be telecast live in the U.S. on NBC Sports Network.
We had a chance to ask questions of both Jessica Aguilar and Alida Gray on this past week's WSOF 8 media conference call, and play the audio from that discussion.
In addition, also discussed are the continuing failures of the sport of wrestling to market and promote the sport, especially through television, and the emulation of many in combat sports of the worst elements in them, rather than striving for positioning them as real sports.

No Holds Barred: Jessica Aguilar on Vale Tudo Japan 3
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with the world's top-ranked MMA fighter in the women's 115-pound division, American Top Team fighter Jessica Aguilar.
Her next fight will take place Saturday, October 5, against grappling legend and MMA pioneer Megumi Fujii, in what is billed as Fujii's retirement match. This will be at the Vale Tudo Japan 3rd event at the Ota City General Gymnasium in Ota, Tokyo, Japan.
This fight will be a rematch of their bout in May 2012 at Bellator 69, in which Jessica Aguilar defeated Megumi Fujii by a close, unanimous decision.
Although Jessica Aguilar had been fighting for Bellator MMA and had a six-fight winning streak, Bellator recently decided to close its women's divisions and thus released all women fighters, including her. Now she is a free agent, and has signed a one-fight deal to fight in Vale Tudo Japan.
We spoke with Jessica Aguilar by phone Sunday about this fight and her career.
"This is the best fight that I could even imagine," she said. "It's bigger than the first time around. And then going back to Japan and for her retirement bout. It's just such a great matchup. And the timing is perfect. I'm a free agent now, so this opportunity is huge for me."
We also discussed the "honor" of fighting in Japan, why the Japanese MMA fans are "great" and "the best MMA fans ever", where she might end up fighting after this fight, the growth of women's MMA, her plans on returning to grappling competition, and much more.

Widely regarded as the number one fighter in the world in the women's 115-pound division, Jessica Aguilar will be returning to action this Thursday, March 28, after a ten-month layoff. She will be facing Patricia Vidonic on a Bellator MMA card at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida. Right now this fight will just be streamed live on the Bellator web site, and may be shown on tape-delay on Spike TV.
This fight will be a rematch between Jessica Aguilar and Patricia Vidonic. We spoke with Jessica Aguilar by phone Sunday about her upcoming fight and her career as a fighter.

After defeating the legendary Megumi Fujii at Bellator 69 by a unanimous decision, Jessica Aguilar will next fight Friday, November 9, at Bellator 80 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, against an opponent to be announced. This card will be televised live in the U.S. on MTV2.
We spoke with Jessica Aguilar by phone Monday night about her next fight and her fighting career.
Speaking of her victory over Megumi Fujii, she said in this interview, "That was my dream fight. That was my goal, to become number one in the world in my weight class, and to go against an idol." And she added, "Megumi's still my idol."
We also discussed her involvement with Sweethearts and Heroes, a non-profit anti-bullying organization which writes that it "believes in educating society to the impact that bullying has on all of our schools, our neighborhoods, and individuals." We discussed her future as a fighter in Bellator, how her mother has accepted that she fights in MMA professionally, and much more.
We also open with the sad news about the passing of Jeff Blatnick at age 55 following complications from heart surgery. Jeff was an Olympic gold medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling in 1984 for the U.S., after overcoming Hodgkin's Disease, a type of cancer. No Holds Barred: Jessica Aguilar

In a major fight between two of the top women fighters in the world, and arguably the top two in the 115-pound weight class, Jessica Aguilar will take on Japanese star Megumi Fujii at Bellator 69 on Friday, May 18. This card will take place at the L'Auberge Du Lac Casino in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and will be televised live in the U.S. on MTV2 and in HD on Epix.
We spoke with Jessica Aguilar by phone this past Thursday to preview this important and high-profile fight.
"The sport is growing for us," she observed in this interview, regarding opportunities for women fighters. She discussed this fight with Megumi Fujii, whom she called "a legend." She also hopes to get in another tournament in Bellator so she can have a crack at a championship. In addition, she said she is continuing her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training both in a gi and without a gi. We also discussed if she would like to compete in the ADCC World Submission Fighting Championships next year, her desire to teach young athletes, and much more.
She also requested that we include this statement which she sent us after the interview:
"I want to give a huge thanks to all my sponsors, teammates, fans, family and all the media like yourself who have helped me on this journey, Eddie. I am blessed and very appreciative to everyone for their continuous support and love. I don't have words to say how much it means to me. Also a huge GRACIAS Bjorn for giving me this opportunity! Smile & Believe."

No Holds Barred: Jessica Aguilar and Women in Combat Sports

She will be fighting Lisa Ellis this Saturday, November 19, at Bellator 58 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
We spoke Sunday afternoon by phone with Jessica Aguilar about this fight, which is a rematch from her first professional MMA fight in 2006, which she lost by submission after taking it with almost no MMA training. We discussed the state of women's mixed martial arts, her plans to compete for a title in Bellator, and much more.
We open by recalling some of the history of women in combat sports, including the training of women in Sparta in ancient Greece for wrestling and pankration, the forerunner of modern mixed martial arts. We note the legal and political battles many women had to wage in the U.S. in the 1970s and beyond to be allowed to compete in boxing and wrestling. As of 2012, women will be competing in all four of the combat sports in the Olympic Games: boxing, wrestling, judo, and taekwondo. But we also note that, despite the growth of women's participation around the world in numerous combat sports, HBO still has never aired women's boxing, the government of Iran still does not have women's wrestling, and UFC still has no women's fights.

No Holds Barred: Jessica Aguilar on Her Controversial Loss to Zoila Frausto, and Her Next Fight

At Bellator 31 on September 30 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Jessica Aguilar fought Zoila Frausto in the semifinals of the Bellator 115-pound women's tournament. The result was a highly-controversial split decision win for Frausto, a verdict not supported by most of those who were in attendance or watching on television. Many simply said that Jessica Aguilar was "robbed". But with the win, Zoila Frausto got a berth in the tournament finals on October 28, where she will face the unbeaten Megumi Fujii.
We spoke Saturday afternoon with Jessica Aguilar about this fight and this disputed decision. She explained her strategy of mainly keeping the fight standing, although she is a world-class grappler and American Top Team member. We discussed what she might have done differently in this fight. She also revealed that she will be fighting on that October 28 Bellator card in Hollywood, Florida, against an opponent to be named. But if Zoila Frausto is unable to fight in the tournament finals because of the injuries she suffered in the September 30 fight, Jessica Aguilar might replace her in the finals against Megumi Fujii.

We spoke with Jessica Aguilar, an American Top Team fighter, on Saturday about what to expect in her fight with Zoila Frausto. We discussed her grappling background, and how she is planning to use it in this fight. She explained the influence she is having on young women and girls who might want to enter the martial arts and combat sports, and how they should believe in themselves. No Holds Barred: Jessica Aguilar

A grappling world champion in both 2009 and 2010, she will be fighting in the eight-woman, 115-pound mixed martial arts tournament promoted by the Bellator Fighting Championships. Her first fight will be against Lynn Alvarez at Bellator 24 on Thursday, August 12, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, and shown live in the U.S. on Fox Sports Net.
We spoke by phone Tuesday about her combat sports career. In a lengthy and animated discussion, she outlined her intriguing story of how she became involved with mixed martial arts, grappling, and jiu-jitsu, almost by accident. She explained in detail why she is today so passionate about these combat sports, what they mean to her, and why more women should take them up. She stressed why she believes that "this is my time" to become successful in mixed martial arts, win this very competitive tournament, and emerge as a star in this sport, and much more.
