No Holds Barred: Claressa Shields, Christina Hammer, Jill Diamond, Kristal Hart
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the Claressa Shields-Christina Hammer women's middleweight unification fight.
On Saturday, April 13, the 24-year-old Shields (8-0, 2 KOs) of Flint, Michigan, USA, who holds the IBF, WBA, and WBC belts, faces the 28-year-old Hammer (24-0, 11 KOs) of Dortmund, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, who holds the WBO belt and is the WBC "Champion in Recess", never having lost that belt. The winner will be recognized as the undisputed women's middleweight champion of the world. Shields has also held the IBF and WBC super middleweight belts, and is a two-time Olympic gold medalist.
This fight will headline a card taking place at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and will be the main event of that card televised live in the U.S. on Showtime.
We spoke with both Claressa Shields and Christina Hammer at a February 26 news conference in New York. Both gave their views on what they each see as their advantages in this fight.
We also spoke with Jill Diamond of the WBC and World Boxing Cares on the advancement in recent years of women's boxing. And we discussed why this is an important fight and what to expect in it with our colleague Kristal Hart, who was shooting video for her show, the Kristal Hart Show.

No Holds Barred: Jenny Wong on the Growth of Women's Wrestling
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with women's wrestling pioneer Jenny Wong.
From 2000 to 2008, Jenny Wong was a member of the U.S. National Team in women's freestyle wrestling. From 2002 to 2007, she was also a resident athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In 2003, she won a world bronze medal at 51 kg/112.25 lbs., at the World Wrestling Championships at New York's Madison Square Garden, whose finals drew over 12,000 spectators. It was only in 2004 that women's wrestling was added to the program of the Olympic Games.
Before retiring from competition in 2008, she won numerous other competitions and medals. She then went to medical school at the Des Moines University-Osteopathic Medical Center and graduated in 2012, and now is an Emergency Medicine Resident Physician at the Henry Ford Health System, which is based in Detroit, Michigan. She is also an athlete representative on the Sport Science Committee at USA Wrestling.
We spoke with Jenny Wong by phone this week.
While she was actively competing, she witnessed a growing acceptance of women's wrestling. Towards the end of her high school wrestling career, "It wasn't really something that was a big deal anymore," she said. She then wrestled on men's teams in college, as well as the U.S. women's team.
"As I moved on there was more acceptance. It became a lot easier to get practice partners. There wasn't such a struggle anymore," she said.
But acceptance is not universal, even in the U.S.
"I do keep hearing about women here and there that are having trouble wrestling for their high school team, so that still exists, but it's a lot better environment, more accepting environment nowadays, I think."
Her wrestling career spanned the time that women's wrestling made historic strides forward. "We've come a long way," she said, but added that there is still "a way to go."
We discussed her own attraction to the male-dominated sport of wrestling, the kinship the wrestling community offered, as well as some of the problems in wrestling, including the decision by several women wrestlers including herself to leave the U.S. Olympic Training Center and train elsewhere.
While she also has an interest in other combat sports such as MMA and jiu-jitsu, as a doctor she is well aware of the dangers of concussions and the growing medical studies about head trauma, brain injuries, and CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy). We discussed that burning issue including the revelations in the documentary film "League of Denial" about brain damage and the attempted coverup by the NFL in American football, as well as the implications for the combat sports, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Jessica Aguilar, Number One in the World
After defeating the legendary Megumi Fujii at Bellator 69 by a unanimous decision, Jessica Aguilar will next fight Friday, November 9, at Bellator 80 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, against an opponent to be announced. This card will be televised live in the U.S. on MTV2.
We spoke with Jessica Aguilar by phone Monday night about her next fight and her fighting career.
Speaking of her victory over Megumi Fujii, she said in this interview, "That was my dream fight. That was my goal, to become number one in the world in my weight class, and to go against an idol." And she added, "Megumi's still my idol."
We also discussed her involvement with Sweethearts and Heroes, a non-profit anti-bullying organization which writes that it "believes in educating society to the impact that bullying has on all of our schools, our neighborhoods, and individuals." We discussed her future as a fighter in Bellator, how her mother has accepted that she fights in MMA professionally, and much more.
We also open with the sad news about the passing of Jeff Blatnick at age 55 following complications from heart surgery. Jeff was an Olympic gold medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling in 1984 for the U.S., after overcoming Hodgkin's Disease, a type of cancer. He also was a television commentator for many years in both wrestling and MMA, and played a key role in developing the rules for UFC in the 1990s, which helped form the basis of the North American unified rules of MMA.

No Holds Barred: An Artful Start to Wrestling at the 2012 Olympics
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman comments on the first four of the eight days of wrestling at the 2012 London Olympics.Greco-Roman wrestling had three days of action, from August 5 to 7, while women's freestyle wrestling had the first of its two days of action on August 8. Women's freestyle wrestling concludes on August 9, while men's freestyle wrestling takes place August 10-12.
The three days of Greco-Roman wrestling saw tremendous displays of art, technique, and drama. Although their team has been successful in freestyle, Iran had never won an Olympic gold medal in Greco, until now. They did it in style, taking three gold medals in the seven weight classes.
Among the topics analyzed are how the scoring broke down in the Greco gold medal matches, the debate on the rules of Greco-Roman wrestling, and the decline of the U.S. Greco team, which did not win any medals. Also discussed are the first two women's freestyle gold medal matches which were won by wrestlers from Japan, the debate on the rules of freestyle wrestling, and more.
