No Holds Barred: Kevin Jackson on the Spectacular Wrestling at the 2012 Olympics
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with 1992 freestyle wrestling Olympic gold medalist, former MMA fighter, and current head wrestling coach for the Iowa State Cyclones, Kevin Jackson.
We spoke by phone Sunday evening just after the conclusion of the 2012 London Olympics, and the eight days of wrestling at it, and both agreed that this was a great event which showcased spectacular wrestling and unparalleled athleticism.
Speaking about U.S. freestyle wrestler Jordan Burroughs, who won a gold medal at 74 kg, Coach Jackson noted the "electricity that surrounds him and the technical skills and the athletic ability and the energy in which he wrestled with, of scoring points and not going to one clinch." Burroughs wrestling this way on the first day of freestyle competition "set the tone" for other wrestlers in other weight classes, he added.
On the issue of world-class wrestlers, particularly some Americans, leaving international competition to go into MMA, Coach Jackson commented, "Most wrestlers want to wrestle. If they're still in a position, in a situation to be the best in the world, that's what they want to do. But some choose not to. They choose to go into the MMA for the financial gain, as opposed to the fame or the challenge."
We also discussed the success of 96 kg freestyle wrestling gold medalist Jake Varner of the U.S., who was a two-time NCAA champion at Iowa State and wrestled in his senior year under Coach Jackson. We discussed many of the great accomplishments at the 2012 Olympics in wrestling, including three wrestlers winning their third straight Olympic gold medals: Saori Yoshida and Kaori Icho of Japan in women's freestyle, and Artur Taimazov of Uzbekistan in men's freestyle. We discussed how the collegiate wrestling programs in the U.S. have helped prepare wrestlers for international competition, what are the prospects for Iowa State in this coming season, and much more.

No Holds Barred: An Artful Start to Wrestling at the 2012 Olympics
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman comments on the first four of the eight days of wrestling at the 2012 London Olympics.Greco-Roman wrestling had three days of action, from August 5 to 7, while women's freestyle wrestling had the first of its two days of action on August 8. Women's freestyle wrestling concludes on August 9, while men's freestyle wrestling takes place August 10-12.
The three days of Greco-Roman wrestling saw tremendous displays of art, technique, and drama. Although their team has been successful in freestyle, Iran had never won an Olympic gold medal in Greco, until now. They did it in style, taking three gold medals in the seven weight classes.
Among the topics analyzed are how the scoring broke down in the Greco gold medal matches, the debate on the rules of Greco-Roman wrestling, and the decline of the U.S. Greco team, which did not win any medals. Also discussed are the first two women's freestyle gold medal matches which were won by wrestlers from Japan, the debate on the rules of freestyle wrestling, and more.

No Holds Barred: Olympic Wrestling Preview with Gary Abbott of USA Wrestling
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Gary Abbott, Director of Communications and Special Projects of USA Wrestling, to preview the wrestling competition at the 2012 London Olympics.On Sunday, August 5, wrestling will commence at the 2012 London Olympics and continue every day through Sunday, August 12, the last day of these Summer Olympic Games. The competition will be held in Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling, with seven sets of medals being awarded in Greco, seven in men's freestyle, and four in women's freestyle. This action, the pinnacle for the sport of wrestling, takes place at the ExCeL Centre, the largest competition venue at the London 2012 Games.
We recently spoke with Gary Abbott, before he left for London, to break down who are the top wrestlers in the world in each weight class and what are the medal prospects for the American wrestlers.
"The U.S. team will be exciting," Gary Abbott said during this interview. "I think that we'll be scoring points, and that's what it's going to take to win."
We also discussed the current rules of international wrestling, how USA Wrestling at this time is not involved with styles which include striking such as amateur MMA, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Victor Cui Previews ONE FC: Pride of a Nation
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the ONE FC: Pride of a Nation mixed martial arts card with Victor Cui, the CEO of ONE FC.
ONE FC: Pride of a Nation will be held Friday, August 31, at the historic Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, the Philippines, the site of the 1975 "Thrilla in Manila" between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.
Among the many fights on this card, which is still being finalized, will be a showdown between Gustavo Falciroli, who holds the CFC (Cage Fighting Championship) bantamweight title, and the internationally-ranked Bibiano Fernandes, who holds the Dream bantamweight title.
"When you go to the Philippines and when you hear the level of excitement that people have for ONE FC coming to town and how fast our ticket sales are moving and how knowledgeable people are of MMA and what we're doing there, it's really, really exciting," Victor Cui said in this interview, which was recorded by Skype Friday (Thursday New York time).
"Our press conference there was supposed to be a half hour press conference, and they ended up doing interviews and talking for almost four hours," he added. "When we sell out Smart Araneta Coliseum, 16,000 people, it's going to be insane in there."
We discussed what fights are confirmed for this card, including the historic participation of three members of the Gracie family: Rolles, Igor, and Gregor Gracie. We discussed the many fighters from the Philippines who will also be featured, including Eric Kelly, Eduard Folayang, and others, and who is confirmed, likely (including Shinya Aoki), and not appearing on this card. We also discussed how ONE FC works with URCC, the major MMA company in the Philippines, as well as the plans for a live webcast of this event, and much more.
In addition, Eddie offers a commentary on the opening ceremony for the 2012 London Olympics, the important role played in it by athletes from the combat sports, and the true spirit of Olympism.

After completing an undefeated 2010-11 season at Nebraska and winning his second NCAA Div. I national championship, Jordan Burroughs went on to represent the U.S. at the world wrestling championships in freestyle at 74 kg/163 pounds. He won the world championship at that event, and has been undefeated since then, including winning championships at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, the Cerro Pelado International Tournament, the Dave Schultz Memorial International Tournament, and the 2011 Pan American Games.
Wrestling in his first Olympic Games, Jordan Burroughs is favored by many to win a gold medal in London. The wrestling at the 2012 London Olympics takes place Sunday, August 5, through Sunday, August 12, at the ExCeL Centre. "It definitely gives me a lot of confidence being the favorite for the Olympic Games," he said in this interview, recorded by phone Tuesday evening, right before he left for London. He added and stressed, "However, I know I still have to go out there and perform. Predictions and projections mean nothing if you don't go out there and perform at your highest level. So for me I'm staying mentally focused right now on the task ahead, and just go out there and win."
We spoke with Jordan Burroughs about his successful transition from American folkstyle to freestyle wrestling, how his training has helped him adapt to international wrestling, his plans to continue wrestling through at least 2016, the possible effects of the Penn State scandal on that school's two-time NCAA Div. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Gary Abbott, Director of Communications and Special Projects of USA Wrestling, to preview the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling.
The 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling will take place Saturday, April 21, and Sunday, April 22, at the legendary Carver-Hawkeye Arena on the campus of the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. The competition will be in men's and women's freestyle wrestling and in Greco-Roman wrestling, to earn a berth at the 2012 Olympics.
The early rounds will be webcast live in the U.S. on NBCOlympics.com, with the finals being televised on next-day tape-delay on NBC Sports Network on April 22 and 23.
The 2012 London Summer Olympic Games run from July 27 to August 12. The wrestling will take place August 5 to August 12, at the ExCeL London.
We spoke with Gary Abbott by phone Saturday afternoon about the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling, to learn who is expected to wrestle and which weight classes the U.S. already has qualified for the 2012 Olympics, and much more.
"It's my favorite event," he said during this interview. "I enjoy it more than the Olympic Games. It blows the NCAA championships away in regards to the emotion. People have four years to win an NCAA title. They might have only one chance to make an Olympic team. So this brings out the best in our athletes, and the fans that are there are going to have a spectacular experience."
