No Holds Barred: Olympic Wrestling Preview with Gary Abbott of USA Wrestling

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Gary Abbott, Director of Communications and Special Projects of USA Wrestling, to preview the wrestling competition at the 2012 London Olympics.

On Sunday, August 5, wrestling will commence at the 2012 London Olympics and continue every day through Sunday, August 12, the last day of these Summer Olympic Games. The competition will be held in Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling, with seven sets of medals being awarded in Greco, seven in men's freestyle, and four in women's freestyle. This action, the pinnacle for the sport of wrestling, takes place at the ExCeL Centre, the largest competition venue at the London 2012 Games.

We recently spoke with Gary Abbott, before he left for London, to break down who are the top wrestlers in the world in each weight class and what are the medal prospects for the American wrestlers.

"The U.S. team will be exciting," Gary Abbott said during this interview. "I think that we'll be scoring points, and that's what it's going to take to win."

We also discussed the current rules of international wrestling, how USA Wrestling at this time is not involved with styles which include striking such as amateur MMA, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Gary Abbott Previews 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Gary Abbott, Director of Communications and Special Projects of USA Wrestling, to preview the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling.

The 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling will take place Saturday, April 21, and Sunday, April 22, at the legendary Carver-Hawkeye Arena on the campus of the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. The competition will be in men's and women's freestyle wrestling and in Greco-Roman wrestling, to earn a berth at the 2012 Olympics.

The early rounds will be webcast live in the U.S. on NBCOlympics.com, with the finals being televised on next-day tape-delay on NBC Sports Network on April 22 and 23.

The 2012 London Summer Olympic Games run from July 27 to August 12. The wrestling will take place August 5 to August 12, at the ExCeL London.

We spoke with Gary Abbott by phone Saturday afternoon about the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling, to learn who is expected to wrestle and which weight classes the U.S. already has qualified for the 2012 Olympics, and much more.

"It's my favorite event," he said during this interview. "I enjoy it more than the Olympic Games. It blows the NCAA championships away in regards to the emotion. People have four years to win an NCAA title. They might have only one chance to make an Olympic team. So this brings out the best in our athletes, and the fans that are there are going to have a spectacular experience."

Before our discussion with Gary Abbott, we also comment on the U.S. Olympic Committee's Road to London Celebration in Times Square in New York on April 18, which is open to the public.

2009 World Wrestling Championships Predictions

Every year, TheMat.com, the web page of USA Wrestling, conducts a poll of international wrestling journalists about their predictions for the gold medal winners in the World Wrestling Championships and, when they are held, the Olympic Games. I have been a part of this group for many years now.

Generally I am not too keen on making public predictions in the combat sports. They can bias your coverage, especially if there is a controversial decision and you want to “prove” your prediction right by crying about the officials. More importantly, they can simplify the analysis that is needed before the competition by not focusing specifically on what each athlete needs to do to win, and is likely to do. Plus, I prefer to be involved in controversies which are usually far more meaningful than debating who will win a particular fight or match. Just like the athletes, I like to pick and choose my battles.

But wrestling presents a special case because it is so important as a combat sport, and at the same time so poorly marketed, promoted, and presented to the public. It thus still needs all the help it can get, and doing these predictions is not much to ask of me at all.

The 2009 World Wrestling Championships take place Monday, September 21, through Sunday, September 27, in Herning, Denmark. Universal Sports in the U.S. will provide television coverage with one-hour primetime shows with highlights of the top matches at 7 PM ET nightly from Thursday, October 1, through Sunday, October 4. Also, beginning at 1:30 PM ET Monday, September 21, there will be a free, live, streaming video webcast of all the medal-match finals in each weight class, at UniversalSports.com.

TheMat.com also has a special coverage section on the World Championships with numerous links and articles, from previews to results when they become available, here.

We also did a special preview show of No Holds Barred about the 2009 World Wrestling Championships with Gary Abbott, the Director of Communications of USA Wrestling. You can play or download that edition of No Holds Barred here. You can also download it here.

Among the various international wrestling journalists who have participated in these polls, I have recently finished first in 2007 and tied for first in 2008. Besides a healthy dose of luck, there is no secret to making these predictions. They are based on studying past results, on who has beaten whom on the mat, on looking for wrestlers on hot streaks, on focusing on major international tournaments like the European and Asian Championships as well as past World Championships and Olympics, and on adding in some subjective factors like hometown advantage and old-fashioned hunches.

This method, of course, still produces numerous incorrect results, as it will no doubt again do this year. Regardless of how accurate, or, rather, inaccurate my predictions turn out to be, they will certainly serve to stimulate interest in the 2009 World Wrestling Championships, and will thus help the sport of wrestling.

So here are my gold medal predictions for the 2009 World Wrestling Championships:

Greco-Roman
55 kg/121 lbs. – Kohei Hasegawa (Japan)
60 kg/132 lbs. – Islam-beka Albiev (Russia)

74 kg/163 lbs. – Mark Madsen (Denmark)
84 kg/185 lbs. – Alexej Mishin (Russia)
96 kg/211.5 lbs. – Aslanbek Khushtov (Russia)
120 kg/264.5 lbs. – Mijain Lopez (Cuba)

Women’s freestyle
48 kg/105.5 lbs. - Clarissa Chun (USA)
51 kg/112.25 lbs. – Tatyana Bakatyuk (Kazakhstan)
55 kg/132 lbs. - Saori Yoshida (Japan)
59 kg/130 lbs. – Johanna Mattsson (Sweden)
63 kg/138.75 lbs. – Mio Nishimaki (Japan)
67 kg/147.5 lbs. - Katerina Burmistrova (Ukraine)

No Holds Barred: Ricardo Liborio and Gary Abbott on Grappling, Wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with two of the most important figures in the world of grappling, Ricardo Liborio and Gary Abbott.

Ricardo Liborio is a legend in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. A black belt under the late, great Carlson Gracie, in 1996 Ricardo was one of the first winners of the Mundial, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world championships, where he also was voted the most technical fighter. Besides being a Brazilian national champion in both jiu-jitsu and judo, he placed second in 2000 at the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Submission Wrestling World Championship and third in 1999. He co-founded the Brazilian Top Team, and then became the founder and head instructor of the American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida, where he still is located. He was voted coach of the year by the North American Grappling Association (NAGA) in 2005, and is a member of the NAGA Grappling Hall of Fame. He is regarded as one of the top coaches of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, mixed martial arts, and grappling in the world. He will also be one of the many international guests at the May 23 Art of War Fighting Championship mixed martial arts card in Beijing, China.

After wrestling at Boston University, Gary Abbott has served for two decades at USA Wrestling, the national governing body for wrestling in the U.S. and a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee. He is the Director of Communications for USA Wrestling, and is one of the key people who is tirelessly working to popularize the sport of wrestling and striving to make sure it is more widely covered in the media.

Now these two noted people from these two different styles of grappling will be working together. Ricardo Liborio has been named the National Coach for USA Grappling, which is the grappling program of USA Wrestling. This is an important step forward in the cooperation between different styles of grappling, and represents an acknowledgement of the essential unity between all styles of grappling, as well as all styles of the combat sports.

It was thus a quite lively and informative discussion that we had for No Holds Barred. We spoke about the journey Ricardo had made from the worlds of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Vale Tudo in Brazil, to mixed martial arts, and now to USA Grappling. We discussed all these styles and rules. We stressed the connection of all these styles of grappling, and all the combat sports. We analyzed the prospects for grappling becoming an Olympic sport. And we discussed with Gary the 2009 U.S. World Team Trials, which take place May 30-31 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to determine the U.S. world teams for men's and women's freestyle wrestling and for Greco-Roman wrestling.

In addition, the 2009 Grappling World Championships will take place in the U.S., at the Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center, Dec. 12-13. We discussed the importance of this international event being held in U.S.
