Listen to Eddie Goldman On Joey Reynolds Show Discussing Olympics

Eddie Goldman of No Holds Barred and SecondsOut Radio was a guest on the nationally-syndicated "Joey Reynolds Show" early Tuesday morning, August 12. Eddie is the boxing correspondent for this show.

It was certainly a contrast of content, styles, and taste, as the other guests were comedian Rick Younger and Joshua Neuman, editor and publisher of Heeb Magazine, who was discussing something called the Heeb Olympics. But Eddie stuck to his game plan, focusing on the huge, positive, worldwide reaction thus far to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, some problems in the Olympics, and what is going on in Olympic and pro boxing.

You can listen to or download this here or here.

The "Joey Reynolds Show" is a national radio broadcast in New York on WOR 710 AM and on 100 other stations via the WOR Network. The show airs live beginning at midnight EDT and runs to 5 AM EDT. No Holds Barred: Eddie Goldman on the Contradictions of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on DojoRadio.com

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents a dialectical look at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, which begin Friday, August 8.

We examine the various aspects of the Olympics, including the contradiction between, on the one hand, the rampant commercialism and corruption in the Olympics, and, on the other hand, the sporting aspect of this event. We conclude, at least for the combat sports, that the Olympics are worth watching because the sporting aspect remains the principal aspect in them.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Wade Schalles and "Wrestling 411", "Mr. Wrestling" Ali Gümüs, and the State of Wrestling

A new weekly wrestling highlight show, called "Wrestling 411", will debut Thursday, January 17, 2008, on the CSTV network in the U.S. It will also be available on the Media Sports Productions web site.

To learn more about this important program, we spoke with Wade Schalles, a two-time NCAA wrestling champion, a champion or All-American in folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman wrestling and in sombo and judo, and a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. International wrestling is also in decline, according to Ali Gümüs, the leading wrestling journalist in the world. Also known as "Mr. Wrestling" and based in Turkey, he has been an editor and writer for the Turkish publication Tercüman and is the author of numerous books on wrestling. He also serves as the chairman of the Wrestling Commission of AIPS, the International Sports Press Association.

Predictions for 2007 World Wrestling Championships

For the past several years, the web page of USA Wrestling, TheMat.com, has been running a poll of wrestling journalists that lists our predictions for the champions in each weight class for the World Championships and Olympic Games. Although I rarely make predictions in professional combat sports, I have done so in wrestling because, frankly, this sport needs all the support, help, and publicity it can get.

This year I have once again participated. The predictions below are for the 2007 World Championships of Wrestling. This event takes place September 17-23 at the Heydar Aliyev Sport and Exhibition Complex in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The web site of the World Championship Sports Network (WCSN) will provide live and on-demand video coverage of the 2007 World Championships of Wrestling.

TheMat.com has a special section devoted to the 2007 World Championships of Wrestling.

My predictions do not, of course, necessarily turn out correct. Over the years I have had a passable record, usually finishing somewhere in the middle of the pack of the other wrestling journalists who likewise take part in these polls.

The point, however, is not to boast or lament about the accuracy of these predictions. Rather, it is but one attempt to use the media in general and the Internet in particular to encourage informed and intelligent discussion about the world's oldest and greatest sport, its star and champion athletes, and its often obscurely-promoted but major international events.

Predictions for silver and bronze medals are not made because these depend in large part on the much-criticized blind draw system, lack of seeding, and no complete rounds of wrestlebacks used by FILA, the international wrestling federation. The gold medalists, however, have to defeat everyone, regardless of the order in which they face their opponents, so the top finishes should reflect the best wrestlers at this event.

Here are my humble predictions for the individual champions at the 2007 World Wrestling Championships. Most will likely be wrong, but hopefully this exercise will stimulate more interest in this important event.

    Men's Freestyle champions
    55 kg/121 lbs. - Besik Kudukhov (Russia)
60 kg/132 lbs. - Seyed Mourad Mohammadi (Iran)
    66 kg/145.5 lbs. - Geandry Garzon (Cuba)
    74 kg/163 lbs. - Mahach Murtazaliev (Russia)
    84 kg/185 lbs. - Georgy Ketoev (Russia)
    96 kg/211.25 lbs. - Khajimurad Gatsalov (Russia)
    120 kg/264.5 lbs. - Artur Taimazov (Uzbekistan)

    Men's Greco-Roman champions
    55 kg/121 lbs. - Roushan Bayramov (Azerbaijan)
    60 kg/132 lbs. - Eusebiu Diaconu (Romania)
    66 kg/145.5 lbs. - Harry Lester (USA)
    74 kg/163 lbs. - Manuchar Krirkvelia (Georgia)
    84 kg/185 lbs. - Alexey Mishine (Russia)
96 kg/211.25 lbs. - Karam Ibrahim Gaber (Egypt)
    120 kg/264.5 lbs. - Khassan Baroev (Russia)

    Women's Freestyle champions
    48 kg/105.5 lbs. - Chiharu Icho (Japan)
    51 kg/112.25 lbs. - Hitomi Sakamoto (Japan)
    55 kg/121 lbs. - Saori Yoshida (Japan)
    59 kg/130 lbs. - Ayako Shoda (Japan)
    63 kg/138.75 lbs. - Kaori Icho (Japan)
67 kg/147.5 lbs. - Jing Rui Xue (China)
    72 kg/158.5 lbs. - Stanka Zlateva (Bulgaria)

NO HOLDS BARRED: Gary Abbott on Grappling and Wrestling World Championships

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this special edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, the second this week, host Eddie Goldman speaks with a very busy Gary Abbott, Director of Communications and Special Projects for USA Wrestling.

Gary has just returned from the first World Grappling Championships, which were held September 9 in Antalya, Turkey, as part of the World Wrestling Games. This was the first time that FILA, the international wrestling federation and which is part of the International Olympic Committee, has sponsored a world championships in grappling.

At that event, grapplers from the US swept the gold medals in all nine weights in both the men's and women's divisions. Among those winning gold medals are several athletes who are prominent in the mixed martial arts, including Jeff Monson and Tara LaRosa.

Next up for the sport of wrestling are the 2007 World Championships of Wrestling. This event takes place September 17-23 at the Heydar Aliyev Sport and Exhibition Complex in Baku, Azerbaijan. Competition will take place in men's and women's freestyle wrestling, and Greco-Roman wrestling. This year's world championships are a qualifying event for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.

We spoke with Gary about the World Grappling Championships, what this event meant to the combat sports, and the performance of the American team. We next previewed the 2007 World Championships of Wrestling, discussing what to expect from the American wrestlers and pointing out whom to watch closely on the world level.

USA Wrestling's web site, TheMat.com, has a special section devoted to the 2007 World Championships of Wrestling.
