No Holds Barred: Bad Blood?

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman comments on the WWE-like "bad blood" angle used to promote the Jon Jones-Daniel Cormier fight; contrasts it with how Floyd Mayweather deconstructed the attempt to promote his 2006 fight with Zab Judah under the name "Sworn Enemies"; compares it to the actions of boxers including Andre Berto and Pete Quillin with their December 12 "Black Out Boxing - A Rally for Justice" in Las Vegas; discusses the need for the fighters involved in the class-action lawsuit against Zuffa/UFC to enlist support from athletes in other sports as well as workers, unions, and the public; and much more.

No Holds Barred: Daniel Cormier

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with two-time U.S. freestyle wrestling Olympian and undefeated mixed martial arts heavyweight fighter, Daniel Cormier.
He will next be fighting in the semifinals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix against Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva. This fight will take place Saturday, September 10, at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio, on a card televised in the U.S. on Showtime.
We spoke with him by phone Thursday about how he plans to face his much heavier and more experienced opponent, who is renowned as a black belt in both jiu-jitsu and judo, and defeated the legendary Fedor Emelianenko by second-round TKO in the quarterfinals of the Grand Prix in February. We discussed how he was added to the Grand Prix after it had started, the role of wrestling in mixed martial arts, why MMA fighters must learn how to wrestle, the lessons of his recent fights, his training with UFC heavyweight titleholder and former All-American wrestler Cain Velasquez, whether or not he plans to return to wrestling, what wrestling must do to promote itself better, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Daniel Cormier, MMA Marathon Man

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Daniel Cormier, the 2007 world bronze medalist and two-time U.S. Olympian in freestyle wrestling, who is 4-0 with three knockouts and one submission victory as a heavyweight mixed martial arts fighter.

In a schedule reminiscent of the early days of boxing, he has scored victories in fights on July 31 and August 13, and will fight again this coming Saturday, August 21.

On July 31, Daniel flew to Australia to score a first-round TKO over Lucas Browne, and capture the XMMA heavyweight title. Two weeks later, on August 13, in Mescalero, New Mexico, he defeated Tony Johnson with a first-round rear naked choke submission to win the King of the Cage heavyweight title. And on August 21, he will face Jason Riley (9-3) at the Strikeforce show at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

We spoke with Daniel Cormier Monday about this marathon schedule and all these fights. He is signed to fight for Strikeforce, and we discussed his plans to work his way up to a title shot in their very talented heavyweight division. He explained just how developed he thinks he is as a mixed martial arts fighter, and when he believes he will be ready for a title fight. As a world-class wrestler, and arguably the best wrestler currently fighting in mixed martial arts, he also discussed what techniques he needs to improve to become a world-class mixed martial arts fighter, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Daniel Cormier

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Daniel Cormier, the 2007 world bronze medalist and two-time U.S. Olympian in freestyle wrestling, who is 2-0 with two knockouts as a heavyweight mixed martial arts fighter for Strikeforce.

While not official yet, it appears likely that he will next be fighting August 13 on a Strikeforce card against an opponent to be announced.

We spoke Wednesday about how his skills as a mixed martial arts fighter have been improving, his training at the American Kickboxing Academy, his working as a coach with Josh Koscheck while filming "The Ultimate Fighter" television series, and the respect that he has for all fighters. He discussed why he believes that Strikeforce presently has the best heavyweight fighters in the world, how far away he is from a title shot, how he would match up with other fighters like Brock Lesnar, and more.

No Holds Barred: Daniel Cormier, 2-0 in MMA

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Daniel Cormier, the 2007 world bronze medalist and two-time U.S. Olympian in freestyle wrestling, who was victorious on March 26 in his second mixed martial arts fight with a first-round knockout over John Devine on a Strikeforce card in Fresno, California. You can watch this fight here.

We spoke about this fight and how and why he was able to triumph so quickly in it. He explained how he is applying and incorporating solid boxing technique into his mixed martial arts offense and defense. We discussed why this fight was not televised by Showtime, which has drawn criticism from many fans. We of course discussed the 2010 NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships, how this remains a tremendous event, some of the top performances at it, and why some colleges produce so many mixed martial arts fighters, including Oklahoma State, where he wrestled and was an All-American. We discussed how many who think they understand mixed martial arts have little or no understanding of the level of wrestling and athleticism in freestyle, in which he won his world bronze medal in 2007 and was a two-time Olympian, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Daniel Cormier, 1-0 in MMA

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Daniel Cormier, the two-time U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestler who was victorious in his mixed martial arts debut September 25 with a second-round TKO over Gary Frazier on a Strikeforce card in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

While fighting professionally in mixed martial arts may be new to Daniel, competing in combat sports certainly is not. We discussed how his extensive wrestling experience prepared him for this fight, both in terms of technique and also entering a cage for this fight. We analyzed the fight itself, and what lessons he drew from it. We also commented on the recent World Wrestling Championships, and the overall disappointing performance by the American wrestlers at it. We learned of his desire to return to the mat for several upcoming major freestyle wrestling tournaments, while also preparing to fight again before this year is over. Among many other topics, he also told us about the coming launch of a Team Thirsty web site with Mo Lawal, Shawn Bunch, and Rashad Evans. And we concluded our lengthy interview with some comments about the upcoming Showtime super middleweight boxing tournament.

So there you have it: mixed martial arts, wrestling, and boxing, all with Daniel Cormier, and only on No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: MMA in New York, Grappling in MMA, EliteXC, Dream, Holm-Sanders, Daniel Cormier and Olympic Wrestling Trials

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins with a highly-charged commentary on what has been happening with the attempt to legalize mixed martial arts in New York State, how both the mixed martial arts and mainstream media have once again offered distorted accounts of the history and nature of the sport and what has been occurring in this latest episode, and what must be done in New York both to legalize the sport and protect the rights of the fighters and provide them with the same protections already afforded boxers.

Next, we draw some lessons from the June 13 Holly Holm-Mary Jo Sanders fight billed as determining the top pound-for-pound women's boxer, the June 14 EliteXC mixed martial arts show in Hawaii, and the June 15 Dream 4 mixed martial arts card in Yokohama, Japan. Once again, the issue of the pivotal role of grappling in the mixed martial arts is addressed.

This past weekend, the 2008 U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials took place in Las Vegas. We address the crazy rules put in place by FILA, the international wrestling federation.

Right after his victory at the Olympic Trials, we spoke by phone with Daniel Cormier, who will represent the U.S. at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. in freestyle wrestling. He is also expected to be part of a group of Olympic wrestlers who will be visiting New York this coming Thursday and Friday to make fan and media appearances.

Mixed martial arts, wrestling, and boxing, all with a no-holds- barred flavor -- now where else can you get all that?
