NO HOLDS BARRED: Carlton Haselrig, 2008 U.S. National Wrestling Championships Preview, Nick Lembo, David Mastrogiovanni
On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman begins by reviewing the entry into mixed martial arts by six-time NCAA heavyweight wrestling champion Carlton Haselrig at the Battle Cage Xtreme (BCX) IV mixed martial arts show, which took place Saturday, April 19, at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
In his first professional fight, the 42-year-old Haselrig defeated IFL veteran Shane Ott with a relentless ground-and-pound attack. The bout was stopped by the referee at 4:09 of the first round, with Haselrig winning by TKO. With this win, Haselrig picked up both the BCX and USKBA heavyweight belts.
Right after the fight, while still in the cage, we spoke with the victorious Carlton Haselrig. We also spoke with Nick Lembo, counsel for the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board and a longtime supporter of mixed martial arts, and BCX promoter David Mastrogiovanni about this fight, and what is next for BCX.
This week, from Thursday, April 24, through Saturday, April 26, the 2008 Las Vegas / ASICS United States National Senior Men and Women Wrestling Championships, better known as the Nationals, take place at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Competition takes place in men's and women's freestyle wrestling and in Greco-Roman wrestling. This is the most important qualifier for the 2008 Olympic Trials, which also take place in Las Vegas June 13-15.
To preview the Nationals, we had a lengthy discussion with Gary Abbott, Director of Communications and Special Projects of USA Wrestling.
