No Holds Barred: Jessica Aguilar and Women in Combat Sports

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with American Top Team and Bellator Fighting Championships mixed martial artist Jessica Aguilar.

She will be fighting Lisa Ellis this Saturday, November 19, at Bellator 58 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

We spoke Sunday afternoon by phone with Jessica Aguilar about this fight, which is a rematch from her first professional MMA fight in 2006, which she lost by submission after taking it with almost no MMA training. We discussed the state of women's mixed martial arts, her plans to compete for a title in Bellator, and much more.

We open by recalling some of the history of women in combat sports, including the training of women in Sparta in ancient Greece for wrestling and pankration, the forerunner of modern mixed martial arts. We note the legal and political battles many women had to wage in the U.S. in the 1970s and beyond to be allowed to compete in boxing and wrestling. As of 2012, women will be competing in all four of the combat sports in the Olympic Games: boxing, wrestling, judo, and taekwondo. But we also note that, despite the growth of women's participation around the world in numerous combat sports, HBO still has never aired women's boxing, the government of Iran still does not have women's wrestling, and UFC still has no women's fights.

No Holds Barred: Ward-Froch, Hershman on Strikeforce, Mayweather-Ortiz Replay, Dream 17, Kids Cage Fighting, New Olympic Boxing Scandal

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman continues commentary on some of the recent controversies in the combat sports. We discuss the postponement of the Andre Ward-Carl Froch World Boxing Classic tournament final because of a training injury to Ward, and compare that to the handling of the injury to Alistair Overeem which caused him to request a postponement of his Strikeforce tournament semifinal. We hear comments from Ken Hershman of Showtime Sports on their relationship with Strikeforce. We analyze the HBO replay of the controversial Floyd Mayweather-Victor Ortiz fight, where the instruction of referee Joe Cortez for both fighters to resume fighting after deducting a point from Ortiz for a head butt was shown on the fight replay, but edited out of the replays thereafter. We discuss the good and bad points of the Dream 17 mixed martial arts card in Japan this past weekend. We expose the U.K. and U.S. media hysteria over a supposed cage fight between young boys, which was really submission grappling with no striking. We discuss the allegations in a BBC report that 2012 Olympic boxing medals were for sale. And we exhort everyone to speak up against corruption in combat sports, lest the bad guys continue to win.
