SecondsOut Radio: Marquez-Diaz and John-Juarez Reviews, Shaun George, Travis Simms, Tor Hamer, Luis Del Valle, Lou DiBella on Broadway Boxing

  • SecondsOut Radio with Eddie Goldman

  • On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by reviewing the brilliant performance of lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez, who stopped Juan Diaz in the ninth round Saturday in Houston, Texas. We discuss this early Fight of the Year candidate, as well as the co-feature where featherweight champion Chris John of Indonesia was held to a controversial draw by Rocky Juarez of Houston. We also discuss the implications of putting such an important card like this not on pay-per-view or in a casino city, but on regular HBO in the U.S. and in a major city like Houston, and the likelihood of such good sense continuing to be shown by the lords of boxing if and when the economy rebounds.

Next, we review the Broadway Boxing card held Wednesday, Feb. 25, in New York. We spoke with light heavyweight contender Shaun George, who needed only 1:26 of the first round to stop veteran Jaffa Ballogou, and make his case that he deserves a boost in the rankings and an eventual title shot. We spoke with heavyweight Tor Hamer and featherweight Luis Del Valle, two prospects who fought on this show and remained unbeaten. And we spoke with promoter Lou DiBella about his Broadway Boxing series and boxing in New York.

In a special interview, we spoke with two-time former WBA 154-pound champion Travis Simms, who is now a free agent and, although he has a stellar record of 26-1 with 19 KOs, is actually finding it difficult to get fights.

We asked him how he would like the boxing media to improve its coverage of the sport. Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, which is co-promoting this fight along with Golden Boy Promotions, also commented on Floyd's coverage in the mainstream media. Mayweather-Hatton will be shown in the US on HBO Pay-Per-View.

This coming Saturday, November 3, the long-awaited showdown between the two undefeated super middleweight champions, Joe Calzaghe (43-0, 32 KOs) from Newbridge, Wales, and Mikkel Kessler (39-0, 29 KOs) from Copenhagen, Denmark, takes place at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. SecondsOut Radio: Joe Calzaghe, Mikkel Kessler, Kendall Holt

  • SecondsOut Radio with Eddie Goldman

  • On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by previewing the megafight between the undefeated WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe (43-0, 32 KOs) and the undefeated WBC/WBA champion Mikkel Kessler (39-0, 29 KOs). This long-awaited title unification fight will take place November 3 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, near Calzaghe's home.

We spoke with both champions, Joe Calzaghe and Mikkel Kessler, at a New York news conference this past week to get their takes on what to expect in this fight.

On September 1, WBO 140-pound champion Ricardo Torres (32-1, 28 KOs) defended his title with a highly controversial 11th-round TKO win over Kendall Holt (22-2, 12 KOs). This fight took place at the Salon Jumbo del Country Club in Barranquilla, Colombia, Torres's home country. Subsequent reports questioned many aspects of the conduct of this fight, including the stoppage, interference from fans and others during the fight, and more. Videos of both the final round and the entire fight have appeared online, with many who have seen them, along with those in attendance, agreeing that justice was not done that night.

We got a chance to speak with Kendall Holt about all this when he attended the Calzaghe-Kessler news conference, and we have that interview for you this week.

Also, as many already know, the scheduled September 15 fight between WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez and Rocky Juarez has been cancelled. The reported reason is that Marquez suffered a cut on his right hand which led to an infection and swelling, thus leading to the fight's cancellation. We discuss this situation this week.
