NO HOLDS BARRED: Passing on UFC A Wise Move by HBO

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman discusses the decision by HBO not to televise UFC shows.

When we interviewed Ross Greenburg, the president of HBO Sports, at the September 19 Mayweather-Hatton news conference in New York, he said that talks between HBO and UFC were ongoing. Last week, however, he issued a statement saying that the deal was now off.

This week we explain in depth why it was a wise move by HBO to end negotiations about airing the trashy UFC product, and how their business models are in conflict. We also offer a critique of the elitist nature of HBO's programming in general, including its boxing series.

SecondsOut Radio: Samuel Peter, Pops Anderson, Jeff Mayweather, Kali Meehan, Riddick Bowe, Dino Duva

  • SecondsOut Radio with Eddie Goldman

  • On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by reviewing this past Saturday night's card at Madison Square Garden in New York.

We spoke with WBC interim heavyweight champion Samuel Peter (29-1, 22 KOs) about his victory over challenger Jameel McCline (38-8-3, 23 KOs), a late replacement for the injured regular WBC heavyweight champ, Oleg Maskaev. McCline knocked down Peter a total of three times in rounds two and three, but it was Peter, using his boxing skills, who rallied to earn a unanimous decision.

We also spoke with Peter's trainer, Pops Anderson, to get a fuller evaluation of his performance. And we spoke with promoter Dino Duva about what is next for Peter.

Plus, we spoke with heavyweight Kali Meehan (33-3, 27 KOs), another late replacement on this card, who scored a TKO victory at the end of round six over DaVarryl Williamson (24-5, 20 KOs). And we spoke with former world heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe who was at this card to get his take on it and find out about his own plans.

This coming Saturday, October 13, another former world heavyweight champion, 44-year-old Evander Holyfield (41-8-2, 27 KOs), will try to win his fifth belt when he takes on undefeated WBO heavyweight champ Sultan Ibragimov (21-0-1, 17 KOs) at the Khodynka Arena in Moscow, Russia. This fight will be on pay-per-view in the US.

At a prefight news conference in New York, we spoke with Jeff Mayweather, Ibragimov's trainer, about what their camp expects to occur this coming Saturday.
