On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reports from Tuesday's Bellator MMA news conference at Madison Square Garden previewing the June 24 Bellator pay-per-view at MSG in New York. We also preview the main event of the Bellator 175 card, which takes place this Friday, March 31, at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois, a rematch between "King" Mo Lawal and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, which will also be shown live in the U.S. on Spike TV.

At the news conference, we spoke with the legend, the greatest MMA fighter of all time, Fedor Emelianenko. He fights former UFC brawler Matt Mitrione in the co-main event. We spoke with the 40-year-old Fedor about this fight and his plans.

No Holds Barred: King Mo on Dec. 16 Fight with Ishii, Ward-Kovalev, Bellator Heavyweights

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with Bellator MMA fighter King Mo Lawal.

His next fight will take place at Bellator 169 against Olympic gold medalist judoka Satoshi Ishii. Bellator 169 will take place Friday, December 16, as part of a joint card with BAMMA 27, at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland.

We spoke with King Mo by phone Sunday.

Discussing this fight with Satoshi Ishii, he said, "This could be wrestling versus judo, boxing versus kickboxing," because Ishii trains in that in Holland and Japan. "Freestyle wrestling, that is.

"So it's going to be a clash of both styles, martial arts, all-around martial arts, grappling and standup."

Besides this fight, we also discussed numerous other topics, including: why many top judokas have had difficulty in MMA; his Bellator 154 fight with Phil Davis which he and many others felt he deserved to win; Saturday's Andre Ward-Sergey Kovalev fight and why he thought Ward put on a great performance and deserved to win; his sparring with undefeated heavyweight boxer Luis Ortiz and Ortiz's disappointing fight with Malik Scott, who was fighting not to win but to survive; the importance of the PBC (Premier Boxing Champions) TV series to boxing; MMA and boxing TV announcers; the possibility of him returning to fight in Rizin in Japan next year; his desire to fight the winner of the February 21 Bellator 172 fight between newly-signed Fedor Emelianenko and Matt Mitrione; plans for Bellator's heavyweight division; and much more.

The Fighters' Rebellion

(Note: This article was originally written on May 23, 2008, for ADCC News. It is reposted here in full.)

When the owners of the Ultimate Fighting Championship bought the assets of the now-defunct Pride Fighting Championships of Japan last year, they thought that it was the start of a new era in the mixed martial arts. They believed that now almost all the best MMA fighters in the world would be promoted exclusively by them, and that they would have a virtual monopoly on the top fights and fighters not seen in a combat sport since the days of the notorious International Boxing Club in the 1950's, which was later broken up by the U.S. government.

The Pride purchase did mark the dawn of a new era, but not the one envisioned by the billionaire Fertitta brothers, who are the majority owners of the UFC.

The top heavyweight and pound-for-pound MMA fighter in the world was, until recently anyway, almost universally regarded as Fedor Emelianenko, who had fought for Pride until that company folded. While Pride's contractual complexities meant that Fedor's contract was not automatically transferred to the UFC as a result of the sale, the UFC bosses did try to sign him to a new contract. Fedor refused, citing "disrespect" and their onerous exclusivity clauses. He even called this type of contract "disgusting."

Fedor's rejection of the UFC led their then-heavyweight champion, Randy Couture, to resign from that company in October. The reason was that Couture, who turns 45 this June, wanted to defend his belt against the best heavyweight in the world, Fedor, and that fight was now impossible unless Fedor signed an exclusive contract to be promoted by the UFC. So Couture quit in hopes of having that fight promoted by another entity.

The UFC-Couture contract dispute is still tied up in court, but it appears obvious that there is no way that Couture will ever fight for the UFC again.

Now UFC's former top star, Tito Ortiz, has said that he will leave after the final fight on his contract, which is this weekend against Lyoto Machida. UFC president Dana White has responded with torrents of profanity-filled insults directed at Ortiz, who wasn't even invited to the event's final prefight press conference.

On top of this, former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia has left the company, and is scheduled to fight Fedor on the July 19 Affliction card in Anaheim, Calif. Sylvia is enjoying his free agency, noting at the Affliction news conference in New York Thursday, "No one wants to do exclusive contracts anymore." He said that he will fight this year for both the Affliction and Adrenaline promotions, and hopes to fight in Japan this year as well.

Even some in the mainstream media are beginning to lose their patience with Dana White. Ed Graney in the Las Vegas Review-Journal recounted some of this history, and wrote of a "dictatorship, which is what happened with the growth of UFC under the leadership of its president, who a friend of mine fittingly described Wednesday as 'the white Don King who happens to be bald.'" He also talked of fighters "who exist under White's authoritative thumb." (http://www.lvrj.com/sports/19169329.html)

While White continues to attack the upcoming EliteXC May 31 card, which will be telecast for free to over 100 million homes in the U.S. on CBS, UFC events are only available on the relatively small Spike TV network and on pay-per-view, for those willing to fork over a one-time fee to watch those shows. At the same time, these pay-per-views are more and more widely available for free on pirate sites, such as SopCast, which are committing copyright violations but are nonetheless reaching growing audiences. So the entire pay-per-view business model, which has been a key source of revenue for companies which have relied on it, is now in danger of being wrecked by the advance of technology.

With fighters jumping ship and their business model in question, we now also see more and more people discussing the very legality of the UFC's contracts. This may be decided, at least in part, by the courts hearing the Zuffa-Couture case.

I raised this issue in December 2007 in the article "It's Time for Federal and State Investigations of UFC Contracts." (http://www.adcombat.com/Article.asp?Article_ID=14555 - New link: http://nhbnews.blogspot.com/2016/01/from-december-2007-its-time-for-federal.html) Now it is more common for the issue of whether or not these contracts violate either the letter or spirit of the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act to be discussed.

So yes, we are indeed entering a new era. It is not, however, the era of an unchallenged monopoly, but of a fighters' rebellion. Unlike failed attempts to rally athletes in other sports such as boxing, the key players in this loose but growing rebellion are some of the sport's top stars and fighters.

And in Japan, where just a year ago UFC seemed to be in a position of dominance, UFC is running no shows, either under the Pride name or their own name. At the same time, various forces in the mixed martial arts world in Japan have regrouped to form companies such as Dream and World Victory Road, and are attempting (with mixed results) to fill the void left by the collapse of Pride.

Ah, the perils of dictatorship. If you study history, you know the eventual fate of all tyrannies. This one may be in an eight-sided cage, but the signs are all there that it getting ready to be overthrown.

No Holds Barred: Tadashi Tanaka on Rizin Fighting Federation

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with our long-time colleague and friend, the Japanese mixed martial arts and puroresu (Japanese pro wrestling) journalist Tadashi Tanaka of Miruhon.net.

He covered the inaugural press conference held October 8 introducing the newest Japanese MMA promotion, Rizin Fighting Federation.

We spoke with Tadashi Tanaka by Skype Monday.

The head of Rizin is someone well-known in the combat sports world: Nobuyuki Sakakibara. Sakakibara had formerly headed the Pride Fighting Championships, which from the late 1990s to the mid-2000s had been the largest and most important MMA promotion in the world. But after a scandal linking the organization to the Yakuza, the Japanese mob, Pride telecasts were dropped by the influential Fuji TV, the promotion soon folded, and Sakakibara left the combat sports world.

Now Rizin seeks to take the place of Pride, and is adopting many of the methods which made Pride so popular, including Pride rules, using a ring instead of a cage, and signing an international group of star fighters such as Fedor Emelianenko, Kazushi Sakuraba, Shinya Aoki, and Gabi Garcia, who will make her MMA debut. In addition, Rizin is actually trying to create a federation, and will be working directly with other major promotions including Bellator in the U.S., Jungle Fight in Brazil, BAMMA in the U.K., KSW in Poland, Road FC in Korea, and Bushido in Lithuania.

Rizin's first show, the Rizin Fighting World Grand-Prix 2015, will actually be a three-day extravaganza scheduled for the week of New Year's Eve. Sakuraba will fight Aoki on December 29, there will be a fan expo December 30, and the main card featuring Fedor against an opponent to be announced will be December 31.

Already Spike TV in the U.S. had announced that it will televise fights from this card, likely on tape-delay because of the time difference between the U.S. and Japan. But major news has also come out in Japan, as once again Fuji TV will be televising fights from this card as well.

"The most important thing is, Fuji TV backs this new promotion. That's the biggest news," said Tadashi Tanaka. In Japan, Fuji TV is one of only five major networks which broadcast free, terrestrial TV, with everything else being "tiny," he said.

Fuji TV's involvement is of particular note because it was articles by Tadashi Tanaka and others in the Japanese publication Shukan Gendai that publicly exposed the Pride-Yakuza connections and eventually led to Fuji TV dropping Pride.

The question arises as to the nature of the backers of this new promotion. And Tadashi Tanaka believes that this new organization "is very clean."

He explained that in Japan, "The Yakuza is essentially dead." The government has had a major crackdown on it, and the gangs themselves are splintering. Thus, Fuji TV and various sponsors feel safe in backing this new venture, he said.

Even so, that is no guarantee that it will all work and fans will buy tickets to live events and watch it on TV. "We don't know the success," he said, and will have to wait and see how Rizin does.

We also discussed this new federation, which he characterized as in essence an "anti-UFC alliance." Fans in Japan and many other parts of the world prefer MMA in a ring rather than a cage, he said, and also are not that concerned about who will be Fedor's opponent because they mainly want to see him fight again.

Expect more announcements soon about the involvement with Rizin of others, including K-1 founder Kazuyoshi Ishii, he said.

We also discussed the "totally bogus" rumors that Rizin is backed by "oil money", possible opponents for Fedor including Masakatsu Funaki, the New Year's Eve tradition in Japan of televising major combat sports events, and much, much more.

No Holds Barred: Evgeni Kogan on Fedor Retiring and the Future of M-1 Global

(Photos by Keisha Morrisey)

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Evgeni Kogan, the director of operations of M-1 Global.

On June 21, M-1 Global held a major card in St. Petersburg, Russia, headlined by the first-round knockout by the legend Fedor Emelianenko over Pedro Rizzo. Right after that fight, Fedor announced his retirement as an active fighter.

We spoke with Evgeni Kogan by Skype Tuesday about this card and Fedor's retirement. We discussed Fedor's legacy as a fighter, whether or not he can be considered the best MMA fighter of all time, and if anyone else could ever match his ten-year unbeaten streak against top opposition. We also discussed the other fights on this card, including the third-round TKO win by Kenny Garner over Guram Gugenishvili to capture the M-1 heavyweight title, and the first-round heel hook victory by Musa Khamanaev over Daniel Weichel to win the M-1 lightweight title. And we discussed Jeff Monson's submission win over Denis Komkin and Monson's epic ring entrance as the Soviet national anthem played in the arena.

In addition, we discussed what Fedor might do in retirement, his involvement with amateur MMA in Russia, the officiating and governance in M-1, the plans for international expansion, the possibility of a return to American television, the next M-1 cards, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Renzo Gracie on ONE FC: Destiny of Warriors, Gracie Worlds, and Fedor

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA legend Renzo Gracie.

Renzo is currently in Malaysia as the trainer for Gregor Gracie, who is fighting Adam "Shogun" Shahir Kayoom of Phuket Top Team and American Top Team Thailand in a welterweight bout at the ONE FC: Destiny of Warriors card Saturday, June 23, at the Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur.

ONE FC: Destiny of Warriors will be streamed live on http://www.livesport.tv/onefc. The first four undercard fights are free of charge, with the remaining six main card fights available on pay-per-view at US$9.99. The first fight is scheduled for 8 PM Kuala Lumpur time (GMT + 8:00), which is 1 PM in London, 5 AM in San Francisco, and 8 AM in New York City.

We discussed all the fights on this card, including the main event of Renato "Babalu" Sobral vs. Tatsuya Mizuno, the welterweight fight between Roger Huerta and Zorobabel "Zoro" Moreira, and the rest of the bouts on this well-balanced and evenly-matched card.

"The good thing now, I'm not just a trainer, I'm the biggest fan of the sport," said Renzo in this interview. "There is nothing that I enjoy more than sit down and watch all those amazing kids go at it."

No Holds Barred: Jeff Monson

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with American Top Team mixed martial arts fighter and two-time ADCC world champion Jeff Monson.

On Sunday, November 20, Jeff Monson fought MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko in the main event of an M-1 Global mixed martial arts card at the Olympic Arena in Moscow, Russia. Fedor dominated the fight, winning a three-round unanimous decision. Afterwards, Jeff required some medical attention, especially from injuries caused by the numerous kicks and punches landed by Fedor.

We spoke with Jeff Monson by phone Wednesday night about what really happened on this trip to Russia. He said that despite the loss in the fight, he was treated "great", including by Fedor, who actually apologized to him after the fight, although he had done nothing outside the rules. We discussed his recovery from these injuries, what happened in the fight, why there was almost no action on the ground, the enormous support he received from the Russian fans, his desire to return to fight in M-1 Global, how he wants to move down to light heavyweight, his busy schedule of fighting and seminars, his desire to be more involved with catch wrestling, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Vadim Finkelchtein of M-1 Global

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Vadim Finkelchtein, the president and co-founder of M-1 Global.

In an interview conducted Saturday by Skype with Vadim Finkelchtein, we discussed the M-1 Global mixed martial arts card held Sunday, November 20, at the Olympic Arena in Moscow, Russia. In the main event, the legendary Fedor Emelianenko stopped a three-fight losing streak by dominating two-time ADCC champion Jeff Monson to take a three-round unanimous decision. Besides the 22,000 fans in attendance, Vadim said there were seven and one-half million people watching this fight on television in Russia alone, with numbers for the rest of Europe and North America still to come.

We discussed the importance of this event, how Fedor used a much more patient and deliberate strategy than he had in his last unsuccessful fights, what this victory means for Fedor's career, plans for a potential fight for Fedor in Dream in Japan on their traditional New Year's Eve card, the proposal to have Fedor fight former UFC heavyweight titleholder Cain Velasquez, whether or not Fedor would ever fight in UFC, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Jeff Monson on Fighting Fedor, Occupy Wall Street, and More

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with American Top Team mixed martial arts fighter and two-time ADCC world champion Jeff Monson.

On Sunday, November 20, Jeff Monson will be fighting Fedor Emelianenko in the main event of an M-1 Global mixed martial arts card at the Olympic Hall in Moscow, Russia. While Fedor had a ten-year winning streak and is regarded as the best heavyweight MMA fighter of all time, he has lost his last three fights. The stage is thus set for this showdown between these two veteran fighters on Fedor's home turf.

We spoke with Jeff Monson Wednesday night by phone about his approach to taking on this legend. We discussed the relative strengths of each fighter, who has the edge in grappling and striking, and what his basic game plan may be.

Jeff is also keeping a very busy schedule, as this will be his sixth MMA fight this year in addition to his competing in numerous grappling events. He also is traveling around the world conducting seminars. We discussed this, as well as his attitude to the recent revival of catch wrestling.

But Jeff is also a self-described anarchist and remains politically active. He was recently arrested at a protest in Olympia, Washington, although all the charges were soon dropped. We thus discussed the growing Occupy Wall Street movement, his views on the many problems in the world, how he has been viewed as a combat sports fighter participating in an avowedly non-violent movement, and much more.

No Holds Barred: The Lessons of Henderson-Fedor

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman analyzes the main lessons of the Dan Henderson-Fedor Emelianenko heavyweight mixed martial arts fight, which took place July 30 as the main event of a Strikeforce card at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, near Chicago. In this fight, Henderson, the Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, won by TKO at 4:12 of the first round.
We explain why this loss by Fedor, his third in a row, does nothing to tarnish his legacy as a fighter after having gone undefeated for ten years. We discuss the wild brawling in this fight and what it says about the level of technique in MMA these days. We analyze the stoppage of this fight when Fedor was knocked out, and argue that not only was the stoppage not early, but was actually late. We discuss the dangers of fighters continuing to get hit after they are concussed on the ground. We note the torrent of negativity which this fight engendered. We comment on the release of Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, and more.

No Holds Barred: Donovan Craig on Fedor-Henderson and MMA in The Philippines

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with veteran combat sports journalist Donovan Craig.
We opened with a discussion of the upcoming fight between two mixed martial arts legends, Fedor Emelianenko and Dan Henderson. They meet in a heavyweight fight in the main event of a Strikeforce-M-1 Global card this Saturday, July 30, at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, near Chicago, which will be telecast in the U.S. on Showtime. We discussed the histories of both fighters, their recent wins and losses, the likely balance of striking and grappling in this fight, how each fighter can win, and more.
Also, Donovan recently returned from a trip to the Philippines to cover a mixed martial arts event promoted by Pacific X-treme Combat (PXC). We discussed the level of fighters on that card, the prospects for growth of MMA in Asia, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Alistair Overeem, Fedor Emelianenko, Tara LaRosa, Rally to Legalize MMA in New York

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses this historic week for mixed martial arts in New York, including the February 8 rally called by the Coalition to Legalize Mixed Martial Arts in New York, and the build-up for the opening round bouts of the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament, which takes place Saturday, February 12, at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
We begin with the speech at the February 8 rally by Coalition co-founder Eddie Goldman, explaining the positive social values which mixed martial arts can have to benefit the people, as well as a brief look at the history of the struggle to legalize MMA and its lessons for New York.
At the rally, we spoke with Alistair Overeem, who holds both the Strikeforce and Dream heavyweight titles as well as the K-1 World Grand Prix 2010 title, and who came to support the rally. We also spoke with the top women's 125-pound MMA fighter in the world today, Tara LaRosa, who also spoke at the rally.
At the February 9 prefight news conference for the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament in New York, we spoke again with Alistair Overeem, this time more about the tournament itself. Overeem is considered by many to be one of the favorites to win this tournament, as is the former linear and Pride heavyweight champion, Fedor Emelianenko.
We also had a chance to ask a few questions directly of Fedor right after the formal news conference. Fedor fights in the main event on that February 12 card against Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva. This card will be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime.
