No Holds Barred: Ward Wins, But Chaos Reigns in Vegas

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses Saturday's controversial stoppage victories of Andre Ward over Sergey Kovalev and Guillermo Rigondeaux over Moises Flores, and how the blundering of the Nevada State Athletic Commission obscured the great performances of these two top-level fighters.

No Holds Barred: King Mo on Dec. 16 Fight with Ishii, Ward-Kovalev, Bellator Heavyweights

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with Bellator MMA fighter King Mo Lawal.

His next fight will take place at Bellator 169 against Olympic gold medalist judoka Satoshi Ishii. Bellator 169 will take place Friday, December 16, as part of a joint card with BAMMA 27, at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland.

We spoke with King Mo by phone Sunday.

Discussing this fight with Satoshi Ishii, he said, "This could be wrestling versus judo, boxing versus kickboxing," because Ishii trains in that in Holland and Japan. "Freestyle wrestling, that is.

"So it's going to be a clash of both styles, martial arts, all-around martial arts, grappling and standup."

Besides this fight, we also discussed numerous other topics, including: why many top judokas have had difficulty in MMA; his Bellator 154 fight with Phil Davis which he and many others felt he deserved to win; Saturday's Andre Ward-Sergey Kovalev fight and why he thought Ward put on a great performance and deserved to win; his sparring with undefeated heavyweight boxer Luis Ortiz and Ortiz's disappointing fight with Malik Scott, who was fighting not to win but to survive; the importance of the PBC (Premier Boxing Champions) TV series to boxing; MMA and boxing TV announcers; the possibility of him returning to fight in Rizin in Japan next year; his desire to fight the winner of the February 21 Bellator 172 fight between newly-signed Fedor Emelianenko and Matt Mitrione; plans for Bellator's heavyweight division; and much more.

No Holds Barred: Sergey Kovalev, Andre Ward, Weekend Boxing Review

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward, who fight Saturday, November 19, in Las Vegas. Also, this past weekend's major boxing events are reviewed.

The fight between Kovalev (30-0-1, 26 KOs) and Ward (30-0, 15 KOs) will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and will be shown live on HBO pay-per-view in the U.S. and Sky Sports in the U.K.

We spoke with both Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward on a media conference call Tuesday.

"I must destroy him," vowed Kovalev.

Although he said he never makes predictions, Ward did say, "It's about a victory. It's about getting my hand raised. I'm not leaving Las Vegas without those belts."

This past Saturday, November 12, saw two major televised boxing cards.

In Monte Carlo, Monaco, and televised live in the U.K. on Sky Sports, Jamie McDonnell won a highly controversial unanimous decision over Liborio Solis to retain his WBA bantamweight belt. The crowd loudly booed the decision which was seen as a robbery. Nonetheless, this was an exciting fight as Solis pressured McDonnell throughout. In an awful heavyweight fight, which was also shown in the U.S. on HBO, the unbeaten Luis Ortiz faced Malik Scott, who chose to run for 12 rounds. Ortiz won a unanimous decision, but did himself no favors with an underwhelming performance himself. That was followed by another exciting matchup, as WBA super featherweight champ Jason Sosa dominated a game Stephen Smith to win by unanimous decision and retain his belt.

In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and shown live in the U.S. on Spike TV, the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) returned with three televised fights. In the first televised fight, lightweight Javier Fortuna survived a first-round knockdown to take a unanimous decision against previously unbeaten Omar Douglas in an entertaining and competitive fight. Next up was unbeaten junior middleweight prospect Jarrett Hurd stepping up to face veteran Jo Jo Dan. Hurd passed this test well, scoring a sixth-round TKO as the fight was stopped by Dan's corner.

The main event was clearly a showcase fight for unbeaten WBC welterweight champ Danny Garcia, who faced Samuel Vargas. As expected, Garcia dominated this bout, and the referee stopped the fight in round seven as Vargas's corner waved a white towel.

Garcia is next slated for a title unification fight on March 4, 2017, with unbeaten WBA champ Keith Thurman, who was a commentator for this card. Predictably, the two jawed at each other in the ring after Garcia's victory, ending this entertaining telecast on a high note.

No Holds Barred: Frampton-Santa Cruz and Garcia-Rojas Reviews, Andre Ward, Terrell Gausha

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman analyzes the Carl Frampton vs. Leo Santa Cruz, Mikey Garcia vs. Elio Rojas, and Adonis Stevenson vs. Thomas Williams Jr. fights from this past weekend, and previews fights involving Andre Ward and Terrell Gausha.

This past Saturday, July 30, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and shown live in the U.S. on Showtime, Carl Frampton (23-0, 14 KOs) captured the WBA featherweight belt with a majority decision over Leo Santa Cruz (32-1-1, 18 KOs). This battle was a fight of the year candidate, with the smaller Frampton also earning mention as a fighter of the year candidate by defeating two previously unbeaten fighters this year, Santa Cruz and Scott Quigg.

The co-feature saw the return of Mikey Garcia (35-0, 29 KOs), who stopped the veteran Elio Rojas (24-3, 14 KOs) in the fifth round of a 140-pound bout. Garcia was returning after a two-and-a-half year layoff because of a legal dispute with his previous promoter, Top Rank, which finally ended in his victory. With this win, Garcia said after the fight that he wants to fight at welterweight for now, as we await his decision on his plans. Rojas was also coming off a layoff after a contract dispute with his former promoter, Don King.

On Friday night, the WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (28-1, 23 KOs) scored a fourth-round knockout victory over Thomas Williams Jr. (20-2, 14 KOs) in an old school and crowd-pleasing brawl. This was the main event of a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) show on Spike TV in the U.S., and took place at the Centre Videotron in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. We also discuss some of the shortcomings of this telecast, and why the business of boxing should see itself as a TV product first.

On August 27, the 2012 U.S. Olympian Terrell Gausha (18-0, 9 KOs) will continue to try to rise to the top of the 154-pound division, as he takes on Steve Martinez (16-2, 13 KOs) at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. This fight will be part of a card shown on Spike TV in the U.S. Our colleague Chris Baldwin spoke with Terrell Gausha at a recent media event and got some brief comments from him.

Yet another fighter in the process of returning from a layoff caused by a contract dispute with his promoter is 2004 Olympic gold medalist Andre Ward (29-0, 15 KOs). He will face 39-year-old Alexander Brand (25-1, 19 KOs) of Colombia on August 6 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, and shown live in the U.S. on HBO, in what is expected to be his last tune-up fight before facing light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev in the fall. We spoke with Andre Ward on a recent media conference call.

No Holds Barred: Andre Ward, Sullivan Barrera, Abel Sanchez

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the March 26 fight between Andre Ward and Sullivan Barrera.

Still one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world, the 32-year-old Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) will face a fellow undefeated fighter, the 34-year-old Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs), who is originally from Cuba. This light heavyweight fight takes place Saturday, March 26, at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, which is Ward's hometown. It will be televised live in the U.S. on HBO and live in the U.K. on BoxNation.

The winner is in line to get a title shot later this year against the consensus best light heavyweight in boxing today, the WBA/IBF/WBO champion Sergey Kovalev (29-0-1, 26 KOs).

We spoke with Andre Ward and Sullivan Barrera, as well as Abel Sanchez, who trains Barrera, on recent media conference calls.

Ward promised that he is "prepared for war." Barrera, unbeaten like Ward but not as well known or having faced a fighter of Ward's caliber, said that up until now "I haven't had the opportunity" to demonstrate that he is a great boxer.

No Holds Barred: Andre Ward, Paul Smith, Shawn Porter, Errol Spence Jr.; Plus Bob Mayeri on Wilder-Molina

(Photograph of Deontay Wilder and Eric Molina by Bob Mayeri)

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews this Saturday's Andre Ward-Paul Smith, Shawn Porter-Adrien Broner, and Errol Spence Jr.-Roberto Garcia fights, and reviews with our correspondent Bob Mayeri this past Saturday's Deontay Wilder-Eric Molina fight.

The 2004 U.S. Olympic gold medalist Andre Ward, with a spotless record of 27-0 and 14 KOs, and still holding a super middleweight title, will be returning to the ring after an absence of 19 months, due to injuries and legal battles. His opponent in what he refuses to call a tune-up fight is British fighter and TV commentator Paul Smith (35-5, 20 KOs), who is coming off two consecutive close losses to slugger Arthur Abraham. This fight will take place at a catch weight of 172 pounds.

The Andre Ward-Paul Smith fight headlines a Throne Boxing card, presented by Roc Nation Sports, this Saturday, June 20, at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. It will be televised live in the U.S. on BET and streamed globally on Tidal.com at 10:00 PM ET/7:00 PM PT, as well as shown in the U.K. on Sky Sports.

Earlier the same day, former world champion Shawn Porter (25-1-1, 16 KOs) will face another former world champion, Adrien Broner (30-1, 22 KOs), in the main event of a Premier Boxing Champions on NBC (PBC on NBC) card at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. This fight, also at a catch weight, will be at a limit of 144 pounds. The co-feature will have unbeaten prospect Errol Spence Jr. (16-0, 13 KOs) facing veteran Roberto Garcia (37-3, 23 KOs) in a ten-round welterweight bout.

The PBC on NBC telecast, this Saturday, June 20, begins in the U.S. at 8:30 PM ET/5:30 PM PT, and will also be shown in the U.K. on Sky Sports.

We spoke with Andre Ward, Paul Smith, Shawn Porter, and Errol Spence Jr. on Monday's media conference calls.

In his comments, Andre Ward discussed what needs to happen for him to become a mega-star like Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. Paul Smith explained why he is inspired to do his best in this fight, even though the card is aimed at showcasing the return of Andre Ward.

Shawn Porter discussed what he has learned in his career and why he believes he will defeat Adrien Broner. Broner no-showed the conference call. Also, Errol Spence Jr. discussed why Roberto Garcia is the most experienced and one of the toughest fighters he will face. Garcia was unavailable for the conference call.

In addition, we spoke about the ninth-round knockout win by WBC heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder (34-0, 33 KOs) over journeyman Eric Molina (23-3, 17 KOs) this past Saturday, June 13, in Birmingham, Alabama, with Bob Mayeri, who was covering and photographing that fight live in the Bartow Arena. We also discussed what might be next for Wilder, how he might fare against the top heavyweight Wladimir Klitschko, and what might be learned by those running the sport of wrestling from the promotion of this fight.

No Holds Barred: ONE FC Pride of a Nation Review, MMA in New York, Junior Wrestling Worlds, Andre Ward-Chad Dawson

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman comments on some of the most recent and upcoming important events in the combat sports.

ONE FC: Pride of a Nation took place August 31 at the packed Smart Araneta Coliseum in the Philippines before an enthusiastic crowd. There are many lessons from these fights, as well as from the ONE FC rules and the announcement that their next card, on October 6 in Singapore, will feature for the first time three ONE FC title fights. ONE FC: Pride of a Nation thus represented a step forward in the maturation process of Asia's largest MMA event.

In wrestling, the 2012 Junior World Championships will be held September 4 to 9 in Pattaya, Thailand. This event is a showcase of many future world and Olympic champions, with two of last year's junior world champions winning Olympic gold medals this year.

In boxing, the top fight pits two champions against each other, as light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson goes down to super middleweight to face super middleweight champion Andre Ward. This fight will take place Saturday, September 8, in Oakland, California, and be shown live in the U.S. on HBO. We have comments from both fighters as well as Ward's trainer Virgil Hunter from the recent media conference call to preview this fight.

The 2012 MMA World Expo will take place December 1-2 at the Jacob Javits Center in New York and, for the first time, will feature an amateur MMA tournament, which is legal in New York. More details are forthcoming, but this is an important development for MMA in New York as well as for this event, now in its fourth year.

In addition, we mention the RUFF 5 MMA card which will take place this Saturday, September 8, in Hohhot, China, and will be shown live on TV in China and online internationally, and more.

No Holds Barred: Lessons from New Year's Weekend Fights, 2011 No Holds Barred Awards

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reviews the fights and some of the issues arising from the New Year's weekend cards, and presents the 2011 No Holds Barred Awards.
The boxing card on Showtime Friday night, December 30, only re-raised questions about the neurological health of returning fighters Jermain Taylor and Andre Dirrell. The UFC card, also on Friday night, again exposed Brock Lesnar, who was blown out by Alistair Overeem in the first round and subsequently announced his retirement from MMA, as the worst UFC heavyweight titleholder in history.
But the spiraling contractual and legal issues facing Overeem, which led to him being sued by his former management and his purse being held up for this victory, also highlighted the need for MMA fighters to have their own association like athletes in other sports do, and to get the same protections as boxers do under the Muhammad Ali Act in the U.S.
Also addressed is the decline of submissions and of grappling in MMA, particularly in the U.S., and what this says about the relative safety and level of technique of MMA compared to boxing and other combat sports.
Dream held its annual New Year's Eve card at the Saitama Super Arena in Japan, featuring a mix of MMA and kickboxing fights with several fake pro "wrestling" acts. This says a lot about the weakness of the governance of this event. On the other hand, the real matches on the Dream card, held in a ring, featured numerous fights displaying a wide variety of grappling and striking techniques. The main event saw a first-round knockout by Fedor Emelianenko over Satoshi Ishii. The co-feature saw a great fight loaded with superior grappling where Shinya Aoki won a unanimous decision over Satoru Kitaoka to win the Dream featherweight title.
Next is the announcement of the very selective and purposely non-comprehensive 2011 No Holds Barred Awards, to highlight some of the good and the bad in the combat sports in 2011. Among the awards are the combat sports athlete of the year, combat sport of the year, boxer of the year, grappler of the year, sports organization of the year, comeback sport of the year, worst state regulation of combat sports in the U.S., best combat sports vlog, best wrestler and boxer in MMA, best MMA ring announcer, best MMA TV announcer, best new MMA journalist, MMA journalist of the year, and a few more awards of varying degrees of historical importance.

No Holds Barred: Andre Ward, Carl Froch, and Boxing Governance

Photo by: Tom Casino / Showtime

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Super Six World Boxing Classic finalists Andre Ward and Carl Froch, and discusses why the bad governance in boxing made this super middleweight tournament necessary.

On Saturday, December 17, WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (24-0, 13 KOs) will face WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (28-1, 20 KOs) in the finals of the two-year-long Super Six World Boxing Classic. This fight will take place at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and will be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime and in the U.K. on Sky Sports. The winner will earn the right to be called the best super middleweight in the world.

We spoke with both Andre Ward and Carl Froch at the kickoff news conference in August for this fight, which had originally been scheduled for October 29 but had to be postponed after Ward suffered a cut during training. We discussed what to expect in this fight, as well as the need for a boxers' union. We also previewed this fight with New York TV host Kristal Hart, whose show airs on Manhattan Neighborhood Network.

In addition, we open with a commentary on why it took an American television network, Showtime, to organize a tournament of the top fighters in the world in this division, when legitimate sports regularly have competitions pitting the best against the best.

No Holds Barred: Andre Ward-Allan Green Preview, Al Bernstein

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the Andre Ward-Allan Green super middleweight fight scheduled for this Saturday, June 19, and speaks with one of the best boxing announcers in the world, Al Bernstein.

WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (20-0, 13 KOs) will both defend his title and continue his quest to win the Super Six World Boxing Classic when he takes on Allan Green (29-1, 20 KOs). Ward won his first fight in this tournament with an 11th-round technical decision over Mikkel Kessler, from whom he captured that WBA belt. Green is making his debut in the tournament, replacing Jermain Taylor, who withdrew after being brutally knocked out by Arthur Abraham in the first round of fights.

The Andre Ward-Allan Green fight will take place Saturday, June 19, at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. It will be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime.

On a recent media conference call, we got comments from both Andre Ward and Allan Green about how they view this fight and what to expect in it.

We also explain why this tournament is one of the best things happening now in the beleaguered and declining sport of boxing.

On Monday, June 14, there was a media roundtable in New York with the veteran boxing broadcaster Al Bernstein to celebrate his 30 years in boxing. At its conclusion, we had a chance to sit down for a lengthy interview with him, which lasted about 30 minutes.

We spoke about how he got into boxing, the role of the broadcaster, the influence of the legendary announcer Don Dunphy, boxing and mixed martial arts, what changes he would like to see in boxing, some of the many absurd conspiracy theories in boxing, the Super Six World Boxing Classic super middleweight tournament, whose fights he has been calling for Showtime, his latest boxing venture on the Internet, and more. This is a rare chance to hear the thoughts of someone most people just see and hear analyzing fights, commenting on his own career and life, and the sport in which he has become one of the most universally respected broadcasters.

No Holds Barred: Tyron Woodley, Mikkel Kessler, Andre Ward

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the big weekend of mixed martial arts and boxing to be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime.

We once again spoke with the unbeaten mixed martial arts fighter and two-time All-American wrestler and Big 12 wrestling champion from the University of Missouri, Tyron Woodley. He fights veteran Rudy Bears this Friday night, November 20, on a Strikeforce Challengers mixed martial arts card from Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas. We discussed what he expects in this fight, why he feels his striking is now even better than his grappling, and more. We also discussed the Strikeforce debut on the undercard of his former teammate at the University of Missouri and current training partner, All-American Michael Chandler.

We also preview the much-anticipated fight between WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler of Denmark (42-1, 32 KOs) and the undefeated Andre Ward of Oakland, California (20-0, 13 KOs). This fight takes place this Saturday, November 21, at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. This is their first fight in the first stage of bouts in the historic Super Six World Boxing Classic super middleweight tournament. We spoke with both Mikkel Kessler and Andre Ward on two media conference calls. They told us what to expect in their fights, how their styles match up, what effect this unique tournament format will or will not have on how they approach this fight, and more.
