No Holds Barred: Donovan Craig Introduces GrappleGnostic
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with veteran combat sports journalist Donovan Craig, to introduce the new grappling and wrestling web site, GrappleGnostic.
"The way I kind of conceive it is sort of a conversation about excellence in the grappling martial arts," he said in our interview, recorded through Skype Thursday.
"It's not a news site. It's a very focused title and it's exploring how the grappling martial arts are expressions of people's quest for personal excellence and competitive excellence."
Sponsored by Defense Soap, the site already has interviews with Terry Brands, Marcos Torregrosa, Steve Garland, and Eddie Bravo, articles about the evolution of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling, and a short history and commentary on the revival of catch wrestling, among others.
In particular, we discussed the article "Catch Wrestling Is Back: The Revival Of A Working Class Sport".
This new site, he said, wants journalistically to "raise the bar. It will consistently raise it as time goes on."
He added that it will "really elevate the level of discourse about something that we all love."
Make sure to check out the site, and look for a lot more to come on GrappleGnostic.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with veteran combat sports journalist Donovan Craig.
We opened with a discussion of the upcoming fight between two mixed martial arts legends, Fedor Emelianenko and Dan Henderson. They meet in a heavyweight fight in the main event of a Strikeforce-M-1 Global card this Saturday, July 30, at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, near Chicago, which will be telecast in the U.S. on Showtime. We discussed the histories of both fighters, their recent wins and losses, the likely balance of striking and grappling in this fight, how each fighter can win, and more.
Also, Donovan recently returned from a trip to the Philippines to cover a mixed martial arts event promoted by Pacific X-treme Combat (PXC). We discussed the level of fighters on that card, the prospects for growth of MMA in Asia, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Donovan Craig on Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Donovan Craig, the editor-in-chief of Fight! Magazine.
Our main discussion focused upon the upcoming Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament, which begins February 12 at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and will be shown live in the U.S. on Showtime.
We began our discussion by reviewing the previous records of the fighters in this tournament against each other. Seven of the eight have previously faced other fighters in it, with each having already faced more than one of the tournament fighters. Every one of these seven fighters has at least one win and at least one loss against the tournament fighters they have already fought.
Besides discussing the brackets, the historical importance of this tournament, and how we see it going, we delved into numerous other topics. Among those we talked about were the cultural and political reasons why MMA is still not legal in New York, the role of movies and fiction in combat sports, the significance of and lessons from the Ali-Frazier trilogy and rivalry for MMA, the Jacob Volkmann-Obama situation, the omission of MMA by a recent Harris Poll on their survey about favorite sports, the actual position of M-1 Global on drug-testing and this tournament, and much more.
In addition, an online petition has just been started for Strikeforce to get the legendary Lenne Hardt as a ring announcer for this tournament. You can sign it here.

No Holds Barred: Donovan Craig of Fight! Magazine
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses mixed martial arts and boxing with Donovan Craig, the editor-in-chief of Fight! Magazine.
We opened with a discussion of media, magazines, and MMA, since our approach to journalism is so important to clarify. We then went on to discuss the many cards coming up this month of June, including the return of the great heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko June 26 against Fabricio Werdum on a Strikeforce-M-1 Global card in San Jose, California. We discussed the emergence as a star in MMA of Strikeforce light heavyweight champion "King" Mo Lawal, the future of Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields whose contract is up with that company and may be leaving it, and how professional boxers would do in mixed martial arts. We also discussed whether it is harder to predict fights in boxing or MMA, who the next great American heavyweight boxer will be, and much more.
