No Holds Barred: Dr. Margaret Goodman of VADA on Overeem, Testosterone, and Fair Fights

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Dr. Margaret Goodman, the president and board chairman of VADA, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association.
The issue of doping, as it has been so often, was at the forefront of the mixed martial arts news this past week, with the Nevada State Athletic Commission hearing on Tuesday, April 24, involving UFC fighter Alistair Overeem. An unannounced doping test last month found Overeem with a highly elevated testosterone to epitestosterone ratio (T/E ratio), and this hearing addressed that. Overeem was applying for a license to fight in May, but while the commission denied his application for a license because of this test, it only stopped him from applying again for nine months, as opposed to the usual 12 months in such situations. In addition, the commission did not require any doping tests of Overeem during this nine month period, with members even effusively praising him at the end of the hearing.

We spoke with Dr. Margaret Goodman Thursday afternoon by phone about what many considered to be a farce and fiasco of a hearing. We discussed what the Nevada commission should have done in this case, the lack of uniformity in drug testing, why such elevated testosterone levels are so dangerous to the health of the athletes, what the fans can do to demand that the fighters are properly tested, how VADA is working with fighters, and much more.

No Holds Barred: On the Kelly Pavlik and Alistair Overeem Situations

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the parallels between the cases of boxer Kelly Pavlik and mixed martial arts fighter and kickboxer Alistair Overeem.
Kelly Pavlik, the former middleweight champion, had been scheduled for a tune-up fight on August 6, but pulled out of the fight just days before it was supposed to occur. While speculation ran rampant about the reasons for his withdrawal, especially since Pavlik had recently been in rehab for alcoholism, a very sober Pavlik argued in an interview with MaxBoxing that he was being used as a "puppet" by his promoter, Top Rank.
Alistair Overeem, the heavyweight champion of both Strikeforce and Dream, and the 2010 K-1 World Grand Prix champion, had been scheduled to fight in the second round of the Strikeforce Grand Prix heavyweight tournament. When he learned that this card would take place on September 10, he said in an interview on HDNet that he requested a postponement of about a month so he could heal from a rib injury, which he also documented. His request was not only rejected, but he was then dropped from the tournament, and then cut entirely by Strikeforce. Three other members of his Golden Glory team were also cut by Strikeforce right after he was.
We draw the parallels between these two cases, even though these two fighters compete in different sports, are at different stages of their careers, and are facing different specific issues. We address the failure of most of the media to report the side of the fighters in cases like this, the lack of adequate representation for fighters, and much more.

No Holds Barred: The Lessons of Henderson-Fedor

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman analyzes the main lessons of the Dan Henderson-Fedor Emelianenko heavyweight mixed martial arts fight, which took place July 30 as the main event of a Strikeforce card at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, near Chicago. In this fight, Henderson, the Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, won by TKO at 4:12 of the first round.
We explain why this loss by Fedor, his third in a row, does nothing to tarnish his legacy as a fighter after having gone undefeated for ten years. We discuss the wild brawling in this fight and what it says about the level of technique in MMA these days. We analyze the stoppage of this fight when Fedor was knocked out, and argue that not only was the stoppage not early, but was actually late. We discuss the dangers of fighters continuing to get hit after they are concussed on the ground. We note the torrent of negativity which this fight engendered. We comment on the release of Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, and more.

No Holds Barred: Alistair Overeem, Fedor Emelianenko, Tara LaRosa, Rally to Legalize MMA in New York

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses this historic week for mixed martial arts in New York, including the February 8 rally called by the Coalition to Legalize Mixed Martial Arts in New York, and the build-up for the opening round bouts of the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament, which takes place Saturday, February 12, at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
We begin with the speech at the February 8 rally by Coalition co-founder Eddie Goldman, explaining the positive social values which mixed martial arts can have to benefit the people, as well as a brief look at the history of the struggle to legalize MMA and its lessons for New York.
At the rally, we spoke with Alistair Overeem, who holds both the Strikeforce and Dream heavyweight titles as well as the K-1 World Grand Prix 2010 title, and who came to support the rally. We also spoke with the top women's 125-pound MMA fighter in the world today, Tara LaRosa, who also spoke at the rally.
At the February 9 prefight news conference for the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament in New York, we spoke again with Alistair Overeem, this time more about the tournament itself. Overeem is considered by many to be one of the favorites to win this tournament, as is the former linear and Pride heavyweight champion, Fedor Emelianenko.
We also had a chance to ask a few questions directly of Fedor right after the formal news conference. Fedor fights in the main event on that February 12 card against Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva. This card will be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime.

No Holds Barred: An Historic Weekend of Fights Around the World

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the historic fights held on the M-1 Challenge XXII, the K-1 World Grand Prix 2010 Final, the Showtime Bantamweight Tournament, and the Khan-Maidana fight cards.

Alistair Overeem, also the reigning Strikeforce heavyweight champion, emerged with the K-1 World Grand Prix championship on December 11 in Tokyo, Japan. This is the first time that an athlete has simultaneously held a major mixed martial arts world title along with winning the K-1 World Grand Prix tournament. He thus has to be considered as the top combat sports fighter of 2010.

Also on December 11, the Joseph Agbeko-Yonnhy Perez rematch, won by Agbeko with a unanimous decision, and the Amir Khan-Marcos Maidana fight, won by Khan by unanimous decision, were both action-packed, seesaw fights. Each deserves to be fight of the year candidates in boxing.

The M-1 Challenge XXII mixed martial arts card, held on December 10 in Moscow, Russia, and shown live on national television in Russia and on a webcast to the world, crowned three M-1 champions and helped establish M-1 Global as a major worldwide mixed martial arts organization.

We discuss this and much more on this edition of No Holds Barred.
