No Holds Barred: Jeff Monson on Capitalism, Anarchism, Communism, and Jon Jones
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with American Top Team MMA fighter and two-time ADCC world grappling champion Jeff Monson.
His next fight is scheduled for the November 15 M-1 Global card in St. Petersburg, Russia, against Alexander Emelianenko.
In his most recent MMA fight, on the June 21 M-1 Global card, also in St. Petersburg, Russia, he defeated Denis Komkin by first-round submission with a north-south choke. For his ring entrance, he electrified the audience by coming out to the national anthem of the U.S.S.R.
The impact of this was instant and unforgettable, as everyone in attendance, including Russian president Vladimir Putin, rose to their feet.
We spoke with Jeff Monson by phone Wednesday night about this event and the message he was trying to send. We then went into a broader discussion about his views on capitalism, anarchism, and communism, including the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Saying fighters are just "a cog in the machine" and "realistically just wage slaves", Jeff Monson focused in on the situation involving the cancellation of UFC 151 and the treatment of UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. We also discussed the prospects for fighters developing some sort of union or association, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Kenny Garner, the New Emperor
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the new M-1 Global heavyweight champion, Kenny "Deuce" Garner.
On June 21, on the M-1 Global card in St. Petersburg, Russia, Kenny captured that title with a convincing third-round TKO over the previously-unbeaten champion, Guram Gugenishvili.
We spoke with the always-quotable Kenny "Deuce" Garner by phone Sunday night.
During our interview, he said that winning this title, along with the retirement of the great Fedor Emelianenko, "makes me the new emperor of Russia."
Now based in Florida and training at American Top Team, he explained why he was able to defeat Guram in this rematch after dropping their first fight in 2010. We discussed how his training at American Top Team has improved his technique both in striking and grappling, his string of three victories in three MMA title fights in 49 days, his speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin right after his last fight, when he expects to fight next, and more.

(Photos by Keisha Morrisey)
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Evgeni Kogan, the director of operations of M-1 Global.
On June 21, M-1 Global held a major card in St. Petersburg, Russia, headlined by the first-round knockout by the legend Fedor Emelianenko over Pedro Rizzo. Right after that fight, Fedor announced his retirement as an active fighter.
We spoke with Evgeni Kogan by Skype Tuesday about this card and Fedor's retirement. We discussed Fedor's legacy as a fighter, whether or not he can be considered the best MMA fighter of all time, and if anyone else could ever match his ten-year unbeaten streak against top opposition. We also discussed the other fights on this card, including the third-round TKO win by Kenny Garner over Guram Gugenishvili to capture the M-1 heavyweight title, and the first-round heel hook victory by Musa Khamanaev over Daniel Weichel to win the M-1 lightweight title. And we discussed Jeff Monson's submission win over Denis Komkin and Monson's epic ring entrance as the Soviet national anthem played in the arena.
In addition, we discussed what Fedor might do in retirement, his involvement with amateur MMA in Russia, the officiating and governance in M-1, the plans for international expansion, the possibility of a return to American television, the next M-1 cards, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Jeff Monson
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with American Top Team mixed martial arts fighter and two-time ADCC world champion Jeff Monson.
On Sunday, November 20, Jeff Monson fought MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko in the main event of an M-1 Global mixed martial arts card at the Olympic Arena in Moscow, Russia. (Photo by Keisha Morrisey.)
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Vadim Finkelchtein, the president and co-founder of M-1 Global.
In an interview conducted Saturday by Skype with Vadim Finkelchtein, we discussed the M-1 Global mixed martial arts card held Sunday, November 20, at the Olympic Arena in Moscow, Russia. In the main event, the legendary Fedor Emelianenko stopped a three-fight losing streak by dominating two-time ADCC champion Jeff Monson to take a three-round unanimous decision. Besides the 22,000 fans in attendance, Vadim said there were seven and one-half million people watching this fight on television in Russia alone, with numbers for the rest of Europe and North America still to come.
We discussed the importance of this event, how Fedor used a much more patient and deliberate strategy than he had in his last unsuccessful fights, what this victory means for Fedor's career, plans for a potential fight for Fedor in Dream in Japan on their traditional New Year's Eve card, the proposal to have Fedor fight former UFC heavyweight titleholder Cain Velasquez, whether or not Fedor would ever fight in UFC, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Kenny "Deuce" Garner
On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with heavyweight mixed martial arts fighter Kenny "Deuce" Garner.
Fighting out of American Top Team in Port St. Lucie, Florida, the exciting, colorful, and outspoken "Deuce" will be fighting in the main event of the M-1 Challenge card on Friday, July 8, at The Hangar in Costa Mesa, California. No Holds Barred: Renzo Gracie, Scott Coker, Vadim Finkelchtein, Joost Raimond on Fedor, M-1 and Strikeforce
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman continues our series of shows on the co-promotional alliance between mixed martial arts companies Strikeforce and M-1 Global, and why this is a positive development for this sport and business.
Last week, at a news conference in New York featuring top heavyweight mixed martial arts fighter Fedor Emelianenko, we once again spoke with Scott Coker, CEO of Strikeforce, about the upcoming fight between Fedor and the unbeaten Brett Rogers, and what the plans of Strikeforce are.
At that same event, we spoke with two key executives from M-1 Global, Vadim Finkelchtein, the M-1 Global president, and Joost Raimond, the M-1 Global operations manager. In quite direct terms, they explained the pyramid structure M-1 Global uses to recruit new fighters and then have the best advance to the top, how and why M-1 Global reached an agreement with Strikeforce to co-promote shows, why the negotiations for a similar agreement with UFC failed, and much more.
Later that afternoon, we spoke with the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, grappling, and mixed martial arts legend Renzo Gracie, whose New York academy Fedor was visiting. We discussed his views on Fedor and the technique he uses, what his own views and plans are in both mixed martial arts and grappling, and much more.

No Holds Barred: King Mo Lawal
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the freestyle and collegiate wrestling champion, and undefeated mixed martial arts fighter, "King" Mo Lawal.
Mo made his American fighting debut Friday night, August 28, with a 25-second TKO victory over the veteran Mark Kerr on the M-1 Global: Breakthrough card at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas.
Shortly after his victory, we reached Mo by phone. He discussed this fight, his strategy, the technique he utilized, the level of wrestling on which he has competed, and how he is still a free agent with no set plans. And, of course, he also asked about the results of the ESPN2 boxing card which was going on the same time as his fight, and we obliged him on that. So listen up to the hottest free agent in mixed martial arts, right here on No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: Fedor Emelianenko, Brett Rogers
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the best fighter in mixed martial arts today, and the man who plans to conquer him in his next fight.
Fedor Emelianenko holds the distinction of being both the best heavyweight and top pound-for-pound fighter in mixed martial arts today. He also is the top mixed martial arts fighter of this decade, and many would add the best heavyweight and even the best overall MMA fighter of all time.
After defeating a virtual who's who of the heavyweight division, Fedor will now have another confident challenger as he takes on the unbeaten Brett Rogers. This will be on a Strikeforce-M-1 Global card this fall at a date and location which will be shortly finalized. This card will be shown in the U.S. on Showtime.
We had a chance to conduct interviews with Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers this Thursday evening while they were in New York on a whirlwind media tour. When you listen to these interviews, you will learn not only how both fighters are approaching this fight, but also life.

No Holds Barred: Fedor Emelianenko, Vadim Finkelchtein, and Strikeforce
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman returns after an unplanned hiatus due to a major computer problem, but that is all repaired now and we are back bigger, faster, stronger, and more No Holds Barred than ever.
We start by catching up on some recent developments in mixed martial arts, most notably the signing of the top heavyweight and pound-for-pound fighter in that sport, Fedor Emelianenko, with Strikeforce. We explain why he made the correct choice for him, and why this is also a good move for the sport. We counter the double standard many fans and supposed members of the media have taken to Fedor, as opposed to their attitudes to Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar.
This past week, Fedor Emelianenko and Vadim Finkelchtein, the president of M-1 Global, of which Fedor is also part, participated in a media conference call to discuss this historic signing with Strikeforce. We had a chance to ask questions of both men, and you can hear that unedited on this edition of No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: King Mo Lawal
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the freestyle and collegiate wrestling champion, and now undefeated mixed martial arts fighter, "King" Mo Lawal.
After four straight victories in Japan in the Sengoku/World Victory Road organization, Mo makes his American mixed martial arts debut August 28 when he fights the mixed martial arts legend and veteran, and also a former college wrestler, Don Frye. This will be the main event on the debut show of the M-1 Breakthrough fight series, to be held in Los Angeles, Calif. This show will be televised in the U.S. live on HDNet.
We spoke with Mo at length about numerous topics Sunday afternoon, July 26, but our discussion had to start with a tribute to Vernon Forrest, the great boxing champion who was murdered during an attempted carjacking in Atlanta Saturday night, July 25. Mo is also a serious boxing fan, so we opened with our comments on the life and contributions of Vernon Forrest.
The many hot topics we discussed with Mo included his thoughts on facing Don Frye and what to expect in that fight; his King Mo persona; his recovery from his recent injuries; how he views the top heavyweight and pound-for-pound mixed martial arts fighter Fedor Emelianenko; why he likes the 1997 fight between Pernell Whitaker and Diosbelys Hurtado so much; his views on UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar; his status as a free agent and why he signed to fight on this M-1 Breakthrough card; his thoughts on Sengoku; his training in the many different techniques of combat sports; whether or not there is a double standard in the treatment of Black fighters in mixed martial arts; the real story of his dispute with Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and his criticisms of him; his plans to return to competing in wrestling as well as starting pro boxing; the entrance into mixed martial arts of U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestler Daniel Cormier; his own use of the Internet and sites like Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace; and more.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Fedor Emelianenko, Vadim Finkelchtein, Monte Cox, Frank Trigg, Gary Shaw, Mitchell Maxwell, M-1 Global
On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman brings you a series of interviews conducted at the kickoff news conference of the new M-1 Global mixed martial arts promotion held Monday, October 22, at the Marc Ecko Enterprises showroom in New York.
The highlight of this event was the appearance by Fedor Emelianenko, the consensus top heavyweight and pound-for-pound fighter in MMA today. He is the first fighter which M-1 Global has announced they have signed. We spoke with both Fedor and his manager, Vadim Finkelchtein, at this event.
We also spoke with another veteran of MMA, Monte Cox. He has been named the president and CEO of M-1 Global. We spoke with him about the current and future plans of when and where M-1 Global plans to run live events, and with which American networks they are presently negotiating. We also spoke about their plans to market Fedor to the American public with Mitchell Maxwell, a Broadway show producer who is now also the chairman of M-1 Global.
At this news conference was veteran MMA fighter and radio and television commentator Frank Trigg of TAGG Radio. We spoke with him about his initial impressions of M-1 Global. We also discussed the prospects for M-1 Global with Gary Shaw, who is a promoter in both MMA and boxing as the Live Events President of EliteXC and the President and Chief Executive Officer of Gary Shaw Productions. Plus, we play an excerpt from the news conference itself where we asked Fedor to respond to some reports alleging that he was ducking some top heavyweights.
A video of the entire news conference is here.
