No Holds Barred: Scott Coker on DAZN and Bellator
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Scott Coker, president of Bellator MMA.
We spoke with him at the media event announcing the U.S. debut of the streaming service DAZN, which took place in New York Tuesday.
Bellator will provide an important part of DAZN's programming, which in the U.S. at first will feature the combat sports of boxing and MMA.
With DAZN launching September 10, their first live show will be on September 22, and headlined by the heavyweight boxing title fight between unified champion Anthony Joshua and former WBA champion Alexander Povetkin, from London.
DAZN's first live Bellator card will be shown the following week, on September 29, and exclusively in the U.S. on DAZN. It will feature Gegard Mousasi vs. Rory MacDonald in a middleweight title fight, and veterans Quinton "Rampage" Jackson vs. Wanderlei Silva. Bellator returns to DAZN October 12 with a card headlined by Matt Mitrione vs. Ryan Bader in their heavyweight Grand Prix semifinals, which will be simulcast on the Paramount Network. Bellator, with the new rights fees from DAZN, will be having a ten-man welterweight Grand Prix tournament, also exclusively on DAZN.
Asked about the structure of the arrangement between the Viacom-owned Bellator and DAZN, Scott Coker said, "It's just strictly a license deal, but it allows us to put some of our biggest fights on this platform, because they want to be in the big fight business, and we're going to deliver that. So to me, it was a win-win."
He added, "This is the ground floor. And this will become a full-blown sports channel at some point. But when you talk about combat sports, man, Eddie, what a great value."
By the time DAZN launches in the U.S. in September, it will be available in seven countries.
"I've heard rumors that they're going to expand into another ten countries before the end of next year," he said.
We also discussed the many fights coming up in Bellator, how this deal lets them show pay-per-view level fights on DAZN for the regular monthly fee of US$9.99, Bellator's mix of veteran and up-and-coming fighters including young wrestlers, how Bellator is recruiting top Olympic-level wrestlers, why Fedor Emelianenko is the greatest MMA fighter of all time, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Bellator 145 Conference Call with Will Brooks, Patricio Pitbull, Daniel Straus, James Thompson, Bobby Lashley, Marcin Held, Scott Coker, Kurt Angle
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents the complete and unedited audio from the Bellator 145 media conference call of October 29.
Bellator 145 will take place Friday, November 6, at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri. It will be televised live in the U.S. on Spike TV.
This card will feature two Bellator title fights. Bellator featherweight champion Patricio "Pitbull" Freire (24-2) will face challenger Daniel Straus (23-6) in their third fight, both of which were won by Pitbull. Bellator lightweight champion Will "Ill Will" Brooks (16-1) will fight Marcin Held (21-3). And a heavyweight clash will have James Thompson (20-14) fighting Bobby Lashley (13-2), also in a rematch of their first fight, which Thompson won.
On this conference call were fighters Will Brooks, Patricio "Pitbull" Freire, Daniel Straus, James Thompson, Bobby Lashley, and Marcin Held. Also on the call were Bellator president Scott Coker and Olympic gold medalist wrestler Kurt Angle, who will be appearing at the November 5 Bellator Fan Fest along with Tito Ortiz, Kimbo Slice, Ken Shamrock, Royce Gracie, and Liam McGeary.
This was a lively call with much animated discussion, including several questions from No Holds Barred, and it is all here for you.

No Holds Barred: Chris Thomas on the Bellator Boom, Renzo-Sakuraba, and Foxcatcher
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with our longtime colleague and correspondent, Chris Thomas.
Chris covered the historic Bellator 131 card on November 15 at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, California. Besides taking place in a packed arena, the main event between Tito Ortiz and Stephan Bonnar drew 1.8 million viewers in the U.S., peaking at two million, on Spike TV, making it the most-watched and highest-rated MMA fight on cable in 2014, and the sixth-highest rated cable show of all types that night in ages 18-49 in the U.S.
In that fight, the ever-popular Tito Ortiz won by split decision over Stephan Bonnar. Will Brooks, coming in as the interim lightweight champion, scored a fourth-round TKO over a former champion, Michael Chandler, to capture the Bellator lightweight belt. "King" Mo Lawal dominated Joe Vedepo and won by third-round TKO. And in what was, as expected, a slugfest, Joe Schilling survived a first-round knockdown and onslaught from Melvin Manhoef to win by knockout in the second round.
We spoke with Chris Thomas by phone Tuesday.
"It was really interesting seeing this be the first real, in my opinion, Scott Coker show," he said, referring to new Bellator president and former Strikeforce head Scott Coker. "And he put his stamp on it like he is going to make a statement. And you could tell that he is ready to take the next step."
He continued, "Everything was on par. I mean everything. The production, the look, the feel, the fans were there, it was a sold-out show. It was pretty amazing. It was pretty exciting. I felt like MMA is about to take another step in the right direction."
We also discussed the fights themselves, the emergence of Will Brooks as a bona fide star and top-level MMA fighter, Bellator's plans for 2015, and more.
In addition, this coming Saturday, November 22, two legends hit the mat, as Renzo Gracie and Kazushi Sakuraba have a grappling match at Metamoris 5 in Long Beach, California. We discussed how this match, unlike their Pride 10 MMA fight in 2000, is being positioned as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu vs. catch wrestling, and what that says about the growth of the prestige of catch wrestling. We also discussed some of the strengths and weaknesses of the Metamoris organization.
This past week saw the release of the highly-acclaimed "Foxcatcher" movie as well as the book of the same name, which inspired the film, by Olympic, world, and national champion wrestler Mark Schultz. We discussed some of the lessons of this tragic tale of the 1996 murder of Mark's brother, fellow Olympic, world, and national champion wrestler Dave Schultz, by the crazed multi-millionaire John du Pont, for the sport of wrestling.
Plus, we discussed some of Chris's business ventures, and a lot more.

No Holds Barred: Scott Coker on the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker about the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament.
We spoke in New York on Monday about this historic tournament, which includes many of the top mixed martial arts heavyweights in the world. We discussed the structure of the tournament, the negotiations between Strikeforce and M-1 Global to re-sign Fedor Emelianenko and have him fight in this tournament, why getting Fedor was "well worth the wait," the licensing situation involving Josh Barnett who is also in this tournament, and more.
In addition, we discussed the efforts to re-legalize mixed martial arts in New York, and the February 8 rally called by the Coalition to Legalize Mixed Martial Arts in New York. "We'll definitely have a voice there," said Scott Coker.
We also read a comment from Nick Lembo of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board about the issue of the length of rounds in this tournament. Many people would like all fights in it, regardless of whether they are for the Strikeforce heavyweight title or not, to be scheduled for five rounds. The tournament starts on February 12 at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and will be shown live in the U.S. on Showtime.

No Holds Barred: Scott Coker of Strikeforce

We spoke Wednesday afternoon, beginning by discussing the very busy schedule Strikeforce has with notable cards May 15 in St. Louis, May 21 in Portland, Oregon, June 16 in Los Angeles, and a co-promotion with M-1 Global June 26 in San Jose, California, featuring the top heavyweight and pound-for-pound mixed martial arts fighter in the world, Fedor Emelianenko. All of those cards will be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime. We also got an update as of Wednesday afternoon about when we would know the status of the May 15 Roger Gracie-Kevin Randleman fight, which may be changed due to a medical problem facing Randleman.
In addition, we discussed the issue of what anti-doping measures should be taken in combat sports, the delay of the return of Fedor from April to June during the M-1 Global-Strikeforce negotiations, the postfight brawl on the April 17 Strikeforce show on CBS and when suspensions will likely be handed down by the Tennessee Athletic Commission, where Strikeforce may recruit new fighters, the overall state of Strikeforce, and more.

No Holds Barred: Scott Coker, CEO of Strikeforce
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Scott Coker, the CEO and founder of the Strikeforce mixed martial arts promotion. There has been much said and written about the next events which Strikeforce will be having, and not all of it is based on fact. Some of it is downright misleading and hopelessly biased. So we decided to speak to the man himself about what Strikeforce is planning in order to get the truth.
After a Strikeforce Challengers event on Showtime on March 26 in Fresno, California, Strikeforce will return to CBS Saturday, April 17, with three title fights on a card at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Headlining that card will be the Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields taking on the former Pride two-division champion and a two-time U.S. Olympian in Greco-Roman wrestling, Dan Henderson. Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi will defend his belt against the unbeaten "King" Mo Lawal. And Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez will fight the Dream champion and submission master, Shinya Aoki of Japan, for the Strikeforce belt.
We spoke with Scott Coker not only about the importance of this loaded card, but also how it will definitely take place April 17 in Nashville and be shown live in the U.S. on CBS. We discussed their plans for their next major show, which will be May 15 from St. Louis, Missouri, and shown on Showtime, headlined by Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem fighting Brett Rogers, with more details on the title situation in that fight to be announced shortly.
We also discussed when he expects the top heavyweight mixed martial arts fighter in the world, Fedor Emelianenko, to return to action in Strikeforce, and the status of the co-promotion arrangement between Strikeforce and M-1 Global, of which Fedor is a partner. We talked about the overall importance of co-promotion in mixed martial arts, and the branding situation, where M-1 Global wanted it made clearer than it had been that they were co-promoting events with Strikeforce. And we discussed possible opponents for Fedor, including the colorful but controversial Josh Barnett, who is currently under suspension for a doping violation, and much more.
So you need not waste time with the rumor-mongers or purveyors of misinformation, because once we again we have the truth for you, right here on No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: Renzo Gracie, Scott Coker, Vadim Finkelchtein, Joost Raimond on Fedor, M-1 and Strikeforce
Last week, at a news conference in New York featuring top heavyweight mixed martial arts fighter Fedor Emelianenko, we once again spoke with Scott Coker, CEO of Strikeforce, about the upcoming fight between Fedor and the unbeaten Brett Rogers, and what the plans of Strikeforce are.
At that same event, we spoke with two key executives from M-1 Global, Vadim Finkelchtein, the M-1 Global president, and Joost Raimond, the M-1 Global operations manager. In quite direct terms, they explained the pyramid structure M-1 Global uses to recruit new fighters and then have the best advance to the top, how and why M-1 Global reached an agreement with Strikeforce to co-promote shows, why the negotiations for a similar agreement with UFC failed, and much more.
Later that afternoon, we spoke with the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, grappling, and mixed martial arts legend Renzo Gracie, whose New York academy Fedor was visiting. We discussed his views on Fedor and the technique he uses, what his own views and plans are in both mixed martial arts and grappling, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Scott Coker and Bob Carson on Cyborg-Carano and Strikeforce
In the main event of a thrilling card, and the most important fight in the history of women's mixed martial arts, Cris "Cyborg" Santos scored a brutal TKO over Gina Carano at 4:59 of the first round before a packed, enthusiastic crowd of 13,524 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., and shown in the U.S. on Showtime. Cyborg thus won the new Strikeforce women's 145-pound belt. Also on that card, Gegard Mousasi, in his U.S. debut, won his 13th consecutive fight and the Strikeforce light heavyweight title by destroying defending champion Renato "Babalu" Sobral at just 1:00 of the first round by a TKO.
We discussed with Scott Coker what at this early stage we can expect the next moves of Strikeforce to be with their star fighters, including Cris "Cyborg" Santos and Gegard Mousasi, and the top heavyweight and pound-for-pound mixed martial arts fighter in the world, Fedor Emelianenko.
We next analyzed with Bob Carson the fights on this card, and explained why Strikeforce does such a good job as a mixed martial arts promotion. We also criticized the coverage of the August 15 Strikeforce card by much of the so-called mixed martial arts "media", which approached it largely like it was a version of the fake pro "wrestling" or some type of beauty pageant involving female fighters Cris "Cyborg" Santos and Gina Carano. And we emphasized that despite more limited resources than some others, Strikeforce now has the top men's mixed martial arts fighter in the world, Fedor Emelianenko, the top women's mixed martial arts fighter in the world, Cris "Cyborg" Santos, and the top rising star mixed martial arts fighter in the world, Gegard Mousasi.
Both these interviews are candid and direct, and you do not want to miss them.

No Holds Barred: Gina Carano, Cris "Cyborg" Santos, Scott Coker, Jay Hieron, Kristal Hart
We begin by discussing some of the slow but steady gains for women in the combat sports of boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, grappling, and mixed martial arts. We note the historical importance that two of the most prestigious teams in mixed martial arts, Xtreme Couture with Gina Carano and the Chute Boxe Academy with Cris "Cyborg" Santos, will be represented in this historic fight. And we also note the continued misogyny of those in the combat sports like UFC and HBO who still prevent the participation of women fighters on their shows.
At a New York news conference at Madison Square Garden for the August 15 card, we had a chance, along with our colleague, television host Kristal Hart, to speak with Gina Carano and Cris "Cyborg" Santos. We also discussed with Kristal Hart what to expect in this fight. And we spoke with Strikeforce promoter Scott Coker about this card as well. And, on a media conference call this week, we spoke with Jay Hieron, a late addition to the card, who will be facing Jesse Taylor.
In addition, we discuss the prevailing drug culture in the mixed martial arts, as evidenced once again by the failure of fighter Nick Diaz to appear for a prefight doping test. Diaz had to be scratched from this card. And we relate this to the woefully ineffective regulation of international combat sports like mixed martial arts and boxing by the various state athletic commissions in the U.S.

No Holds Barred: Fedor Emelianenko, Vadim Finkelchtein, and Strikeforce
We start by catching up on some recent developments in mixed martial arts, most notably the signing of the top heavyweight and pound-for-pound fighter in that sport, Fedor Emelianenko, with Strikeforce. We explain why he made the correct choice for him, and why this is also a good move for the sport. We counter the double standard many fans and supposed members of the media have taken to Fedor, as opposed to their attitudes to Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar.
This past week, Fedor Emelianenko and Vadim Finkelchtein, the president of M-1 Global, of which Fedor is also part, participated in a media conference call to discuss this historic signing with Strikeforce. We had a chance to ask questions of both men, and you can hear that unedited on this edition of No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: Scott Coker of Strikeforce
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Scott Coker, the founder and CEO of the mixed martial arts company Strikeforce.
Strikeforce announced Thursday, Feb. 5, that they had purchased key assets from ProElite, the parent company of EliteXC, including the contracts of numerous of their top and best-known fighters. EliteXC stopped running shows in October 2008. Strikeforce will also run live events to be televised in the U.S. on Showtime, with the first one being April 11 in San Jose, Calif. There are also plans for up to four live televised shows on CBS. Both Showtime and CBS had previously been airing EliteXC shows.
In a lengthy interview, we discussed the status of the fighter contracts which were purchased by Strikeforce, which fighters Scott expects will fight for Strikeforce, their plans for the April 11 show and beyond, their deals with Showtime and CBS, their continuing weekly show on NBC, what to expect regarding the issue of EliteXC and Strikeforce champions, what has happened to kickboxing, the evolution of mixed martial arts as a sport, and much more.
