No Holds Barred: Rose Gracie on 2013 Gracie Worlds, Brazil Protests, and Questioning Everything

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with Rose Gracie.

Originally mainly known as the granddaughter of the legendary Helio Gracie and the daughter of UFC co-founder Rorion Gracie, Rose Gracie has come into her own with her series of jiu-jitsu tournaments which have matches that can only be won by submissions, with no points or judges. This rule set she describes as "the real jiu-jitsu" which her grandfather did.

Her next tournament is the 2013 Gracie Worlds.

This event is scheduled for June 29-30 at the Santa Clara Convention Center, 5001 Great America Pkwy, Santa Clara, California 95054, and is being held in conjunction with The FitExpo - Santa Clara. The gi tournament will take place Saturday, June 29, followed by the no-gi tournament Sunday, June 30, with kids' and adults' divisions both days.

On Sunday, Rose's husband and retired MMA fighter Javier "Showtime" Vazquez will face Eddie Bravo black belt Victor Davila in a submission-only, no-time-limit superfight.

We spoke with Rose Gracie by phone in a late night interview in the wee hours of Friday morning.

We discussed the Gracie Worlds and the importance of submission-only events for jiu-jitsu, grappling, and the combat sports. We also focused on the protests in Brazil against corruption, out-of-control spending on the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Rio Olympics, lack of jobs, and the neglect of the well-being of the masses of people.

She explained why she follows this advice given to her by her family: "Accept nothing. Question everything."

We also talked about her experiences attending several events, including Nick Diaz's new WAR MMA promotion and the Metamoris Pro jiu-jitsu event, organized by her brother Ralek Gracie, and more.

So while the hour was late when we talked, the talk was sharp and insightful, just as it always is with Rose Gracie.

No Holds Barred: On the Chael Sonnen and Nick Diaz Rulings by the Nevada State Athletic Commission

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman comments on the May 21 hearing and rulings by the Nevada State Athletic Commission regarding UFC fighters Chael Sonnen and Nick Diaz.

Sonnen had been suspended in 2010 by the California State Athletic Commission for an elevated testosterone/epitestosterone (T/E) ratio of 16.9:1. The CSAC only allowed for a maximum ratio for athletes of 4:1. Sonnen claimed that he needed testosterone replacement therapy, and on Monday applied for, and was granted, a therapeutic use exemption by the Nevada commission.

We read a statement by Victor Conte, the former BALCO mastermind who is now an anti-doping consultant and activist, calling this ruling "outrageous". We explain why this exemption in essence, whatever the intent, puts the Nevada commission in the role of being an enabler of doping rather than a preventer and blocker of doping, and thus support calls for this commission to be investigated and its members fired.

In addition, we discuss the one-year suspension and fine handed down to Nick Diaz for a positive test for marijuana metabolites, and contrast this to the kid glove treatment afforded Sonnen. Diaz has a medical marijuana card in his home state of California. But we also argue that Diaz, who had been suspended by this same commission back in 2007 for marijuana use, should not have been allowed to get off without any punishment. We also question the views of those who simply want to remove marijuana from the list of banned substances in the World Anti-Doping Code, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Gina Carano, Cris "Cyborg" Santos, Scott Coker, Jay Hieron, Kristal Hart

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the historic fight between Gina Carano and Cris "Cyborg" Santos, which headlines a Strikeforce mixed martial arts card at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., this Saturday, August 15. This fight, which will be for the new Strikeforce145-pound women's title, will mark the first time a women's fight has been the main event of a major mixed martial arts card featuring male fighters. This card will be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime.

We begin by discussing some of the slow but steady gains for women in the combat sports of boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, grappling, and mixed martial arts. We note the historical importance that two of the most prestigious teams in mixed martial arts, Xtreme Couture with Gina Carano and the Chute Boxe Academy with Cris "Cyborg" Santos, will be represented in this historic fight. And we also note the continued misogyny of those in the combat sports like UFC and HBO who still prevent the participation of women fighters on their shows.

At a New York news conference at Madison Square Garden for the August 15 card, we had a chance, along with our colleague, television host Kristal Hart, to speak with Gina Carano and Cris "Cyborg" Santos. We also discussed with Kristal Hart what to expect in this fight. And we spoke with Strikeforce promoter Scott Coker about this card as well. And, on a media conference call this week, we spoke with Jay Hieron, a late addition to the card, who will be facing Jesse Taylor.

In addition, we discuss the prevailing drug culture in the mixed martial arts, as evidenced once again by the failure of fighter Nick Diaz to appear for a prefight doping test. Diaz had to be scratched from this card. And we relate this to the woefully ineffective regulation of international combat sports like mixed martial arts and boxing by the various state athletic commissions in the U.S.
