No Holds Barred: Jay Hieron

After the IFL ceased operations, however, Jay has had a rocky road finding fights, despite being the reigning IFL champion when it folded and not having lost a fight since winning that title in December 2007.
Now he has signed with Strikeforce, and after a successful debut with that company in August, his next fight is likely to be on their January 30 card in Sunrise, Florida, near Miami.
In a lengthy interview, we spoke with Jay Hieron about all this and what is next for him. We discussed his views on why a fight between him and Nick Diaz fell through, and when he believes they may finally meet. We spoke about how he has managed to persevere in the face of so many challenges in his career, including mistakes he made early on. We discussed his development from being a wrestler in mixed martial arts to becoming a complete fighter, and much more.
Jay Hieron believes that 2010 will be his year, and you can hear just why on this edition of No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: Gina Carano, Cris "Cyborg" Santos, Scott Coker, Jay Hieron, Kristal Hart
We begin by discussing some of the slow but steady gains for women in the combat sports of boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, grappling, and mixed martial arts. We note the historical importance that two of the most prestigious teams in mixed martial arts, Xtreme Couture with Gina Carano and the Chute Boxe Academy with Cris "Cyborg" Santos, will be represented in this historic fight. And we also note the continued misogyny of those in the combat sports like UFC and HBO who still prevent the participation of women fighters on their shows.
At a New York news conference at Madison Square Garden for the August 15 card, we had a chance, along with our colleague, television host Kristal Hart, to speak with Gina Carano and Cris "Cyborg" Santos. We also discussed with Kristal Hart what to expect in this fight. And we spoke with Strikeforce promoter Scott Coker about this card as well. And, on a media conference call this week, we spoke with Jay Hieron, a late addition to the card, who will be facing Jesse Taylor.
In addition, we discuss the prevailing drug culture in the mixed martial arts, as evidenced once again by the failure of fighter Nick Diaz to appear for a prefight doping test. Diaz had to be scratched from this card. And we relate this to the woefully ineffective regulation of international combat sports like mixed martial arts and boxing by the various state athletic commissions in the U.S.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Jay Hieron, Wagnney Fabiano, Bob Meyrowitz, YAMMA Preview, IFL Review
On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman reviews the IFL mixed martial arts card held Friday, April 4, at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and previews the debut show of YAMMA Pit Fighting mixed martial arts this coming Friday, April 11, at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Right after their fights, we spoke with two of the IFL champions, 170-pounder Jay Hieron and 145-pounder Wagnney Fabiano, about their successful title defenses Friday night. Hieron, a former Div. I college wrestler at Hofstra, scored a TKO win over Mark Miller with a ground-and-pound attack, winning at just 2:10 of the first round. Fabiano, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and expert, scored a first-round knockout of Shad Lierley in just 37 seconds, landing a beautiful straight left-right hook combination that put him away.
This coming Friday, April 11, the much-anticipated and already controversial debut show of YAMMA Pit Fighting takes place at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This will be an all-heavyweight show, with two Masters’ Superfights and a one-night, eight-man tournament. This card will also be shown live on pay-per-view.
To get the latest on this card and clear up some of the mysteries about this show as well as some of the confusion being spread by some so-called media members, we spoke directly this past Thursday afternoon with Bob Meyrowitz, a co-founder of the UFC and now the man in charge of YAMMA Pit Fighting.

We also spoke with Guy Mezger, president and matchmaker for the HDNet Fights promotion. HDNet telecast the IFL Grand Prix live in the U.S. on their television network. We discussed with Guy when and where the next HDNet Fights show is likely to take place, who might fight on it, how HDNet Fights is working with other promotions as partners, how HDNet Fights has become the primary sporting event on HDNet, and how HDNet Fights differs from the UFC.
In addition, we spoke with country music star Trace Adkins, who attended this event. And we spoke with Leo Khorolinsky, the manager of former UFC heavyweight champion and current top contender Andrei Arlovski about what is next for his fighter.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Chris Horodecki, Jay Hieron, Paulie Malignaggi, Herman Ngoudjo, Kurt Otto, IFL Grand Prix and 2008 Roadmap
On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman previews the Dec. 29 IFL Grand Prix Finals, discusses the 2008 IFL Roadmap, and previews the Jan. 5 fight between Paulie Malignaggi and Herman Ngoudjo.
The International Fight League (IFL) will be holding its 2007 Grand Prix Finals, featuring mixed martial arts fights for individual championships in five weight classes, Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. This card will be televised live in the U.S. on HDNet and in Canada on Fox Sports World Canada. We discuss all these five title fights and the histories of the fighters involved.
We also hear the comments of 155-pound fighter Chris Horodecki, who fights Ryan Schultz for that title, and 170-pound fighter Jay Hieron, who fights Delson Heleno in another title fight, from a recent media teleconference call.
The IFL will be making some significant changes as it begins its third year of existence in 2008. Most are aimed at expanding the popularity of their organization while cutting financial losses. They issued their 2008 IFL Roadmap outlining these changes, and we offer our comments on that. We also spoke with IFL co-founder and commissioner Kurt Otto on a media teleconference call to discuss this and some other issues with him.
Boxing returns in a big way in the new year with a title fight between IBF junior welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (23-1, 5 KOs) and challenger Herman Ngoudjo (16-1, 9 KOs) January 5, 2008, at Bally's Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and shown live in the U.S. on Showtime. We spoke with both Paulie Malignaggi and Herman Ngoudjo on a media teleconference call (or at least tried to).
