No Holds Barred: Fabricio Werdum, Evgeni Kogan

(Photo of Fabricio Werdum, Eddie Goldman, and Marcelo Garcia, New York, Nov. 12, 2010, by Ricardo Liborio)

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with mixed martial arts fighter and champion grappler Fabricio Werdum, and Evgeni Kogan, the director of operations of M-1 Global. Both these interviews were conducted Saturday, November 13, at the MMA World Expo at the Jacob Javits Center in New York.

We spoke with Fabricio Werdum about his historic victory over Fedor Emelianenko on a Strikeforce-M-1 Global card in June, the first uncontested loss by Fedor in his ten-year mixed martial arts career. We discussed the technique he used to win that fight, using a triangle choke to submit Fedor in just 1:09 of the first round. He explained that he plans to fight three times in 2011 in Strikeforce, starting in March against either Fedor or Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, and also compete at the 2011 ADCC World Submission Fighting Championships, in which he is a two-time defending champion in the +99 kg weight class.

The future of Fedor, who has one fight left on his contract with Strikeforce, was also a main focus of our discussion with Evgeni Kogan. While in New York, he met with Showtime, which televises Strikeforce cards in the U.S., about signing a new deal extending his contract. On this subject, Evgeni Kogan stated, "I think we're seeing the light at the end of the tunnel" in those negotiations, although no new deal has yet been completed. We thus discussed the future of Fedor and co-promoting with Strikeforce, as well as the plans of M-1 Global to expand their own series of shows and tournaments in the U.S. and Europe.

We also begin by calling for a heavyweight tournament by Strikeforce in 2011, since they currently have the best four heavyweight fighters in mixed martial arts: Fabricio Werdum, Fedor Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem, and Josh Barnett.

No Holds Barred: The Werdum Effect

(Photo: Esther Lin/Strikeforce)

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman explains why the Fabricio Werdum-Fedor Emelianenko fight of June 26, 2010, where Werdum submitted Fedor in just 69 seconds with a triangle choke, is shaping up to be the most significant fight this year in mixed martial arts. We also explain why it could end up being the most important for the role of grappling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in mixed martial arts since Royce Gracie tapped out Dan Severn, also with a triangle choke, back at UFC 4 on December 16, 1994.

We analyze what we call "The Werdum Effect" in relation to the slew of submissions at UFC 116 on July 3, including the victory by Brock Lesnar over Shane Carwin by an arm triangle choke. But we also break down the poor level of grappling and striking technique shown in that fight, compare noted fighters in the mixed martial arts heavyweight division today, discuss theoretical matchups involving them, and discuss the analysis of the Lesnar-Carwin fight by various writers, including Josh Gross and Jonathan Snowden.

No Holds Barred: Kid Peligro on Werdum, Jiu-Jitsu Triumphant, and Good and Bad of 2010 Mundials

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our colleague and correspondent Kid Peligro.

We opened with a discussion about the key role of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the submission victory by Fabricio Werdum over Fedor Emelianenko. Werdum, a two-time Jiu-Jitsu world champion and a two-time ADCC world champion, defeated Fedor with a triangle choke in just 69 seconds in the main event on the Strikeforce-M-1 Global mixed martial arts card held Saturday, June 26, in San Jose, California. We analyzed the technique used by Werdum in this historic victory, handing Fedor his first real defeat in mixed martial arts in his storied career.

We next discussed the good and the bad of the 2010 World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, also known as the Mundials. This event, the most prestigious in the world in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, took place June 3-6 at California State University Long Beach. At it, Roger Gracie once again dominated all his opponents, winning both in his weight and the absolute divisions. Many people, however, emerged from that event with major criticisms of some current trends in jiu-jitsu which were apparent at it, including the tendency for some top competitors not to try submissions. We also focused on the future of jiu-jitsu and grappling, the key role played by many people in Abu Dhabi in supporting and developing these sports, and much more.
