NO HOLDS BARRED: Mo Lawal, Ron Scott Stevens

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman speaks with freestyle wrestler Mo Lawal and Ron Scott Stevens, the chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.

This past Saturday, April 26, Mo Lawal won his third U.S. Nationals title at 84 kg/185 lbs. With this victory, he advances directly into the finals of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, which take place June 13-15 in Las Vegas, Nev. The winners at the Olympic Team Trials will represent the U.S. at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, in August.

We spoke at length with Mo Lawal about his victory at the Nationals and his plans for the future.

Since 1997, the sport of mixed martial arts has been banned in the State of New York. Now there are plans to repeal the regressive legislation outlawing it and place it under the sanctioning of the New York State Athletic Commission.

To get his view on this matter, we spoke with Ron Scott Stevens, the chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Carlton Haselrig, 2008 U.S. National Wrestling Championships Preview, Nick Lembo, David Mastrogiovanni

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman begins by reviewing the entry into mixed martial arts by six-time NCAA heavyweight wrestling champion Carlton Haselrig at the Battle Cage Xtreme (BCX) IV mixed martial arts show, which took place Saturday, April 19, at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

In his first professional fight, the 42-year-old Haselrig defeated IFL veteran Shane Ott with a relentless ground-and-pound attack. The bout was stopped by the referee at 4:09 of the first round, with Haselrig winning by TKO. With this win, Haselrig picked up both the BCX and USKBA heavyweight belts.

Right after the fight, while still in the cage, we spoke with the victorious Carlton Haselrig. We also spoke with Nick Lembo, counsel for the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board and a longtime supporter of mixed martial arts, and BCX promoter David Mastrogiovanni about this fight, and what is next for BCX.

This week, from Thursday, April 24, through Saturday, April 26, the 2008 Las Vegas / ASICS United States National Senior Men and Women Wrestling Championships, better known as the Nationals, take place at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Competition takes place in men's and women's freestyle wrestling and in Greco-Roman wrestling. This is the most important qualifier for the 2008 Olympic Trials, which also take place in Las Vegas June 13-15.

To preview the Nationals, we had a lengthy discussion with Gary Abbott, Director of Communications and Special Projects of USA Wrestling.

SecondsOut Radio: Glen Johnson, Calzaghe-Hopkins Controversy

  • SecondsOut Radio with Eddie Goldman

  • On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie
Goldman begins by reviewing the controversial split decision win by Joe Calzaghe (45-0, 32 KOs) over Bernard Hopkins (48-5, 32 KOs) this past Saturday night, April 19, in Las Vegas. In particular, boxing's subjective scoring system is discussed.

That scoring system was also the focus of even greater controversy on April 12, when WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (26-0, 17 KOs) won a highly-disputed unanimous decision over former world champion Glen Johnson (47-12-2, 32 KOs) in Tampa, Florida. This decision was roundly booed by the fans in the St. Pete Times Forum. After the fight, American viewers watching on Showtime were asked to select which fighter impressed them the most on this televised card, which also included the unanimous decision win by Antonio Tarver (27-4, 19 KOs) over Clinton Woods (41-4-1, 24 KOs) to capture the IBF light heavyweight belt. Eighty percent selected Glen Johnson.

We had a chance this past week to speak about this fight at length with Glen Johnson. He also has posted a remarkable video interview about this fight on YouTube and the site of his promoter, Seminole Warriors Boxing.

NO HOLDS BARRED: BCX IV Preview, The Legend of Carlton Haselrig, David Mastrogiovanni, Mike Chapman, Bob Meyrowitz, YAMMA 1 and 2

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman begins by previewing the Battle Cage Xtreme (BCX) IV mixed martial arts show, which takes place Saturday, April 19, at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The show will also be webcast live on StreamingMartialArts.com.

The main event on this 17-fight card at BCX IV will be a bout for the BCX heavyweight title between Carlton Haselrig and IFL veteran Shane Ott.

Carlton Haselrig is a legend in wrestling. He was the only six-time NCAA champion, winning the heavyweight titles in both Divisions I and II in 1987, 1988, and 1989, while wrestling for the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown. He later became a Pro Bowl offensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers, despite not having played college football. But substance abuse curtailed his incredible athletic career. Now, at age 42, Carlton Haselrig has another chance, as he will be fighting for a title in his mixed martial arts debut Saturday night.

To preview this card, we spoke with BCX promoter David Mastrogiovanni about it. To learn more about Carlton Haselrig as an athlete, we spoke with Mike Chapman, the executive director of the Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum, and the top amateur wrestling historian in America.

In addition, we followed up on the debut show last week of YAMMA Pit Fighting by speaking with promoter Bob Meyrowitz. We both reviewed that show's pros and cons, and also heard the preliminary plans for their YAMMA 2 card.
