NO HOLDS BARRED: BCX IV Preview, The Legend of Carlton Haselrig, David Mastrogiovanni, Mike Chapman, Bob Meyrowitz, YAMMA 1 and 2
On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman begins by previewing the Battle Cage Xtreme (BCX) IV mixed martial arts show, which takes place Saturday, April 19, at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The show will also be webcast live on StreamingMartialArts.com.
The main event on this 17-fight card at BCX IV will be a bout for the BCX heavyweight title between Carlton Haselrig and IFL veteran Shane Ott.
Carlton Haselrig is a legend in wrestling. He was the only six-time NCAA champion, winning the heavyweight titles in both Divisions I and II in 1987, 1988, and 1989, while wrestling for the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown. He later became a Pro Bowl offensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers, despite not having played college football. But substance abuse curtailed his incredible athletic career. Now, at age 42, Carlton Haselrig has another chance, as he will be fighting for a title in his mixed martial arts debut Saturday night.
To preview this card, we spoke with BCX promoter David Mastrogiovanni about it. To learn more about Carlton Haselrig as an athlete, we spoke with Mike Chapman, the executive director of the Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum, and the top amateur wrestling historian in America.
In addition, we followed up on the debut show last week of YAMMA Pit Fighting by speaking with promoter Bob Meyrowitz. We both reviewed that show's pros and cons, and also heard the preliminary plans for their YAMMA 2 card.
