NO HOLDS BARRED: Arturo Gatti, Alfonso Gomez, Kermit Cintron, Emanuel Steward

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman previews the boxing card scheduled for this coming Saturday, July 14, at what is expected to be a sold-out Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

On that card, the ever-popular former world champion Arturo Gatti (40-8, 31 KOs) faces Alfonso Gomez (16-3-2, 7 KOs), and IBF welterweight champ Kermit Cintron (27-1, 25 KOs) defends his title against Walter Matthysse (26-1, 25 KOs, 1 NC). We spoke with Arturo Gatti and Alfonso Gomez at a New York news conference Wednesday about their fight.

We also spoke with Kermit Cintron about his fight as well as whether he actually plans to fight in mixed martial arts as had been recently reported. And we spoke with trainer Emanuel Steward, who trains Cintron, about his fight, as well as this past Saturday's win by IBF heavyweight champion, Wladimir Klitschko, whom he also trains, over Lamon Brewster by TKO at the end of the sixth round in Germany.

SecondsOut Radio: Alcine, Gatti, Margarito, Williams, King, Jones, Hanshaw, Perez, Gomez, Couser

SecondsOut Radio: Joachim Alcine, Arturo Gatti, Antonio Margarito, Paul Williams, Don King, Roy Jones, Anthony Hanshaw, Luis Perez, Alfonso Gomez, Cliff Couser

  • SecondsOut Radio with Eddie Goldman

  • On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by reviewing one of the best fight cards of the year. Called "Fistic Fireworks", this event was held Saturday, July 7, at the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and featured four upsets in eight bouts, including two in its three title fights.

On that card, Joachim Alcine (29-0, 18 KOs) of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, captured the WBA super welterweight title by upsetting the previously-unbeaten Travis Simms (25-1, 19 KOs) of nearby Norwalk, Connecticut, with a unanimous decision. We spoke with the new champion, Joachim Alcine, after his victory.

Also on that card, Luis Perez (25-1, 16 KOs) won the vacant IBF bantamweight title by scoring a seventh-round TKO over Genaro Garcia (35-6, 20 KOs). We spoke with Luis Perez after his win. Also on the undercard, veteran heavyweight Cliff Couser (26-12-2, 14 KOs) upset recent heavyweight title contender Monte Barrett (31-6, 17 KOs) with a second-round TKO. We also spoke with Cliff Couser after his fight.

This card also included the memorable one-punch knockout by Nonito Donaire (18-1, 10 KOs) of another previously-undefeated fighter, Vic Darchinyan (28-1, 22 KOs), to win the IBF flyweight title in yet another upset.

The impresario for this night of the unexpected was promoter Don King. We spoke with him to get his typically understated reaction to the night's in-ring fireworks.

This coming weekend will also see more boxing action.

At Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, former world champion Arturo Gatti (40-8, 31 KOs) faces Alfonso Gomez (16-3-2, 7 KOs), and IBF welterweight champ Kermit Cintron (27-1, 25 KOs) defends his title against Walter Matthysse (26-1, 25 KOs, 1 NC). Also on July 14, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., WBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito (34-4, 1 NC, 24 KOs) defends his title against the undefeated challenger, Paul Williams (32-0, 24 KOs). The Gatti-Gomez, Cintron-Matthysse, and Margarito-Williams fights will all be shown live in the US on HBO.

We got a chance to speak with Arturo Gatti, Alfonso Gomez, Antonio Margarito, and Paul Williams on a series of media teleconference calls.

Also on July 14, the 38-year-old former pound-for-pound king Roy Jones Jr. (50-4, 38 KOs) continues his quest to return to his old form by taking on the undefeated Anthony Hanshaw (21-0-1, 14 KOs) on a pay-per-view card from the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss. We spoke with both Roy Jones Jr. and Anthony Hanshaw on another media teleconference call.
