No Holds Barred: Pat Miletich

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with mixed martial arts legend Pat Miletich.

The first fighter to hold the UFC 170-pound title and the creator of one of the most influential schools of fighting, Pat Miletich, though not officially retired as a fighter, can now be seen as an announcer for Strikeforce on their telecasts on Showtime.

We spoke with him by phone on Tuesday night about a number of hot topics in mixed martial arts. We discussed the importance of the upcoming Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament, the ongoing battle to legalize mixed martial arts in New York, some of the highlights of his legendary fighting career, and the influence of his style on all of mixed martial arts, where he emphasized fighters developing a well-rounded set of techniques. He elaborated on the comments he had made on the January 7 Strikeforce Challengers telecast, including his praise of the athletic abilities of rising star Tyron Woodley. We also discussed announcing and his good relationship with his fellow Strikeforce announcers, the negativity that pervades much of what calls itself the mixed martial arts media, a little bit about wrestling (especially since Pat is from Iowa), and much more.

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman begins by reviewing the new mixed martial arts-themed film, Never Back Down, which opens in theaters Friday, March 14.

Next, we speak with one of the top freestyle wrestlers in America and the world, Mo Lawal. He has just signed with Team Quest and plans to start his professional mixed martial arts career following the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Rory Markham of the IFL will fight Emyr Bussade in a welterweight MMA fight Friday, April 4, on a card at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J., popularly known as the Meadowlands. Markham is also a member of the Miletich Fighting Systems camp, led by MMA legend Pat Miletich, which will face the American Top Team in their first IFL action. We spoke with Rory Markham and Pat Miletich on a media teleconference call this week.

The annual tradition of a major boxing show at Madison Square Garden on St. Patrick’s Day weekend continues this year on Saturday, March 15, with a new headliner. Unbeaten junior middleweight James Moore (14-0, 10 KOs) of Queens, NY, via County Wicklow, Ireland, will have the toughest opponent of his pro career when he faces veteran former title challenger J.C. Candelo (27-9-4, 18 KOs). This is also only the second card being run by the new Celtic Gloves Promotions, which was formed principally to promote Moore. This card will take place at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, and will be webcast live at GoFightLive.com.

At a news conference this week, we spoke with James Moore about what to expect this Saturday night. We also spoke with women's junior middleweights Cristy Nickel (7-5, 4 KOs) and Oliva Fonseca (1-1-2), who fight each other on this card. We spoke with Bruce Silverglade, the matchmaker for Celtic Gloves Promotions, who is also the president and owner of the famed Gleason's Gym. And we spoke with Mike O'Sullivan, co-owner of Celtic Gloves Promotions.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Antonio McKee, Ben Rothwell, Benji Radach, Renzo Gracie, Pat Miletich, Ken Yasuda, Randy Gordon, Gerald Harris, Alex Schoenauer

  • NO HOLDS BARRED on PodOmatic

  • On this packed edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman reviews the 2007 International Fight League (IFL) World Championship Semifinals, which were held Thursday, Aug. 2, at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey. On that card, the New York Pitbulls defeated the Tokyo Sabres by a score of three fights to two, and the defending IFL team champions, the Quad City Silverbacks, bested the Los Angeles Anacondas four fights to one. Both the Pitbulls and Silverbacks thus advance to the IFL World Team Championship, set for September 20 in Hollywood, Florida.

Right after the fights, we spoke with several fighters and coaches from that event, and, as always, discussed a number of issues and hot topics in the mixed martial arts and the combat sports.

We spoke with Randy Gordon, former editor of The Ring magazine and chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission from 1988 to 1995, who also now has a show on Sirius Satellite Radio called Fight Club. We discussed why he has gone from being an opponent of the mixed martial arts to becoming an outspoken advocate for the sport, the prospects for New York finally legalizing MMA, and just who it was who helped him change his mind.

We spoke with Antonio McKee, welterweight fighter for the Sabres, about his split decision victory over Delson Heleno of the Pitbulls. We also discussed in depth his work with underprivileged children through his organization, Fight for Kids.

We spoke with Ben Rothwell, heavyweight for the Silverbacks, whose 13-second knockout of Krzysztof Soszynski of the Anacondas set a new IFL record for the quickest knockout. We spoke with middleweight Benji Radach of the Anacondas, who defeated Gerald Harris of the Silverbacks by a TKO at 3:03 of the first round. We also spoke with Gerald Harris about this fight and his plans. And we spoke with Alex Schoenauer, light heavyweight of the Anacondas, who lost a controversial three-round split decision to Mike Ciesnolevicz of the Silverbacks.

Plus, we spoke with victorious coaches Renzo Gracie of the Pitbulls and Pat Miletich of the Silverbacks about how they analyzed their teams' performances in the semifinals and what to expect in the finals. And we spoke with Ken Yasuda of the Sabres about the semifinals and what to expect next season.
