SecondsOut Radio: Rafael Marquez, Israel Vazquez, David Diaz
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman previews the two major fights scheduled at different venues and on competing US television networks this coming Saturday, August 4.
On that date, WBC super bantamweight champion Rafael Marquez (37-3, 33 KOs) makes the first defense of his title against the man from whom he won it this past March, Israel Vazquez (41-4, 31 KOs). In their first fight, a likely fight of the year candidate, Marquez, earning his first title at 122 after successfully campaigning at bantamweight for years, won by TKO at the end of the seventh round when Vazquez could not continue due to a broken nose. This rematch, the first fight back for both men, takes place at the Dodge Arena in Hidalgo, Texas, and will be shown live in the US on Showtime.
Also on August 4, Mexican legend Erik Morales (48-5, 34 KOs) goes up to lightweight as he tries to earn a title in his fourth weight class by taking on WBC lightweight champ David Diaz (32-1-1, 17 KOs) at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL., near Chicago, and on HBO Pay-Per-View in the US. The veteran Morales, though, has lost his last three fights and four of his last five (including his only one at lightweight, a decision against Zahir Raheem in 2005). For Diaz, this will be the first defense of his belt, which he won as an interim title last August by scoring a come-from-behind tenth-round TKO over Jose Armando Santa Cruz.
We spoke with Rafael Marquez, Israel Vazquez, and David Diaz on a series of media teleconference calls to get their views on what to expect August 4.
