No Holds Barred: Dr. Margaret Goodman on Mayweather-Pacquiao Drug-Testing Controversy

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Dr. Margaret Goodman about the heated drug-testing controversy which threatens to derail the proposed fight between top pound-for-pound boxers Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao on March 13, 2010, in Las Vegas. Dr. Goodman is a neurologist, the former chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and also the medical correspondent for No Holds Barred.

In a lengthy interview recorded Sunday evening, we discuss why it is "the right thing" for the regulatory bodies of sports like boxing and mixed martial arts to adopt the protocols of the World Anti-Doping Agency and have random prefight blood testing of all fighters for widely-used banned and dangerous substances, including EPO and human growth hormone. Thus far, the Mayweather camp has insisted on such testing, while the Pacquiao camp has vehemently opposed that.

Dr. Goodman explains why the current testing procedures used by the various athletic commissions are "behind the times" and must be changed. We discuss how the controversy around the proposed Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is further killing and discrediting boxing, and why the motivations of the Mayweather camp in bringing this issue to the fore are far less important than the need for such testing to protect the health and safety of the fighters.

This interview provides scientifically-based information and analysis that most of the media either does not or will not dare discuss, but it is all right here for you on No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: King Mo Lawal

Photo: Esther Lin/STRIKEFORCE

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with the mixed martial arts fighter and freestyle and college wrestling champion, "King" Mo Lawal.

Making his debut for the Strikeforce mixed martial arts promotion on their card held this past Saturday night, December 19, "King" Mo scored a knockout over mixed martial arts veteran Mike Whitehead in just 3:08 of the first round. His mixed martial arts record now stands at 6-0, with 5 knockouts.

No Holds Barred: Henry Cejudo, Ben Askren, King Mo Lawal, Cung Le, Scott Smith

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman continues our series of interviews from the 2009 FILA Grappling World Championships, and previews the December 19 Strikeforce mixed martial arts card, which will take place in San Jose, California, and will be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime.

First up is 2008 Olympic gold medalist freestyle wrestler, Henry Cejudo. His autobiography, American Victory, will be released January 5, 2010. At the Grappling World Championships, which he was observing, we spoke about his life and this new book. We also discussed the forthcoming chapters in his life, as he will now be training under the legendary Ricardo Liborio at American Top Team. There he will be learning submissions, jiu-jitsu, and grappling, as he prepares potentially to become a mixed martial arts fighter. We also discuss his plans to return to wrestling for the 2012 Olympics, how he has been a lifelong student of boxing, and more.

Next is another member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team, Ben Askren. He won a gold medal at the 2009 Grappling World Championships this past weekend at 84 kg/185 lbs. in men's no-gi grappling. We spoke with him candidly about what this victory does and does not mean, why he wants changes to these grappling rules to attract more jiu-jitsu athletes to this event, how he will continue to wrestle as well as improve his jiu-jitsu skills, his signing by the Bellator Fighting Championships to begin fighting in their mixed martial arts events in April 2010, training to compete in wrestling, grappling, jiu-jitsu, and mixed martial arts all at once, and more.

We next speak with a regular guest on No Holds Barred, the undefeated mixed martial arts fighter and freestyle and college wrestling champion, "King" Mo Lawal. He will be making his debut in Strikeforce when he faces mixed martial arts veteran Mike Whitehead in a heavyweight bout on the December 19 show. We spoke with "King" Mo about how he plans to fight his opponent, fighting at heavyweight, his first fight in a cage, how he has been treated in Strikeforce, whether he prefers competing in mixed martial arts or wrestling, his expected entourage of "queens" who will accompany him to the cage, and much more.

The main event of this December 19 Strikeforce card features the unbeaten former Strikeforce middleweight champion, Cung Le, who vacated his title to concentrate on an acting career, returning to competition to face veteran Scott Smith. On a recent media conference call, we spoke with both Cung Le and Scott Smith about whether or not Cung Le will also have to fight ring rust, what to expect in this fight regarding the mix of striking and grappling, and more.

This is another edition of No Holds Barred loaded with discussions with some of the top combat sports athletes in the world, so make sure to check it out.

No Holds Barred: Felicia Oh, Grappling Star

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with grappling star Felicia Oh.

At the 2009 Grappling World Championships, held December 12-13 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, she won two world championships, winning both the no-gi and gi tournaments in the women's 50 kg/110 lbs. division. She adds these to her long list of grappling and jiu-jitsu credentials, which include a silver medal at the 2007 ADCC Submission Fighting World Championships in the women's 55 kg division.

Besides competing in all these events, Felicia Oh is employed as a grappling and fitness instructor at the Big John McCarthy Ultimate Training Academy in Valencia, California.

In a lengthy and heartfelt interview held just after she won that second world championship, she explains how and why she went from being a self-described computer geek to a world champion, and how grappling and jiu-jitsu have become key components of her life. She discusses combat sports and the need to have a healthy lifestyle. She explains how grappling helps her appreciate life. She frankly discusses why she made the life choices she did. And she gives you a glimpse of why so many people who know her respect her so much.

Felicia Oh is thus a star both on and off the mat, and you can hear her on this edition of No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: Bob Carson on Grappling

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our colleague and correspondent Bob Carson, who is also the host of Carson's Corner.

Our subject is grappling, a sport which is growing phenomenally. But with all the great grappling events around the world, can this sport ever become a mass, spectator sport? That is what we discuss, right here on No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti, the Anvil Effect, and Fighter Safety in MMA

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our colleague and senior correspondent, the legendary martial artist and matchmaker John Perretti, about the growing safety concerns in mixed martial arts and boxing, and what must be done to make these sports safer for the athletes immediately.

We begin with John rebuking the notion that mixed martial arts today, with all its rules and regulations, is safer than it was in the 1990s, when he served first as matchmaker for Battlecade/Extreme Fighting and then UFC. We discuss why both incompetent officiating, and the style of fighting and widespread use of techniques such as elbows and punches to the head on the ground, which are so in vogue today in mixed martial arts, have increased the danger to the fighters. As John puts it, these techniques create an "anvil" effect, and thus should no longer be allowed.

We also discuss why so many older fighters are being recycled and still booked in companies like UFC, and the danger that creates.

And we address the latest in a series of scandals emerging from boxing this past weekend. We discuss why one judge in the exciting and closely-contested Paul Williams-Sergio Martinez fight actually scored it 119-110 for Williams, the latest hand-wrap scandal that led to Melissa Hernandez not fighting Holly Holm, the riot in the ring in Minneapolis when the referee did not hear the bell to end the first round of the Joey Abell-Raphael Butler fight and Abell knocked Butler out after that bell, the ending of the padded undefeated records of Tyrone Brunson and Dmitriy Salita, and more.

This is another groundbreaking discussion, raising issues few dare even to admit exist, and it is all right here for you on No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: Kid Peligro on the Decade in Grappling

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our correspondent and colleague Kid Peligro, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and a senior editor of the ADCC News, about the phenomenal growth of grappling in this first decade of this new century.

Besides being the foundation of mixed martial arts, grappling itself is now a sport contested in numerous international, national, regional, and local events. Our discussion reviewed the growth of these events, including the most prestigious of these, the ADCC Submission Fighting World Championship.

We examined where grappling is headed in the next decade, its exponential growth in this decade, how the sport is reaching a critical mass in popularity and participation, and the subsequent increase of prize money for the athletes in these events.

We also discussed the rise of newer organizations, such as FIJJA (Federation International of Jiu-Jitsu Association). With headquarters in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and a head office in Abu Dhabi, FIJJA is setting up an international professional jiu-jitsu circuit. It is organizing the Abu Dhabi Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship and numerous continental and regional qualifiers for that world championship event, which is scheduled to take place April 15-17, 2010, in Abu Dhabi. Their next qualifier, the Abu Dhabi Pro World Trials - Africa, takes place this Saturday, December 5, in Kempton Park, South Africa.

In addition, we discussed the possibility of a grappling event being held during or alongside the 2016 Summer Olympics, which take place in Rio de Janeiro, a great world capital of grappling. And we touched on the lack of an international central body governing all of grappling, the need for the various grappling bodies to work together, and more.

The main event features two of the most talented and technical fights in mixed martial arts, Dean Lister and Thales Leites. This card will be televised live throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico on HDNet Fights.

There are few people in the mixed martial arts who are as passionate about the sport as Mark Pavelich. That became crystal clear from the opening moments of our lengthy phone interview, conducted Tuesday afternoon, December 1.

We of course discussed with Mark Pavelich this card, called MFC 23: Unstoppable, and the main event fighters, Dean Lister and Thales Leites. But we mainly delved into his philosophy and practices as a promoter. We discussed the history of the Maximum Fighting Championship, why his business model has been so successful, his eventual plans to run MFC shows in the U.S., his attitude to other mixed martial arts companies, how MFC is primarily a family business, the critical importance of aesthetics for his product to please the fans, why he "hates" the use of a cage in mixed martial arts and uses a ring for his events, his positive attitude to the media both big and small covering his shows, and much more.

This is a landmark interview with a unique individual, so get ready for some more intelligent and important discussion, right here on No Holds Barred.
