No Holds Barred: Kid Peligro on the Decade in Grappling
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our correspondent and colleague Kid Peligro, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and a senior editor of the ADCC News, about the phenomenal growth of grappling in this first decade of this new century.
Besides being the foundation of mixed martial arts, grappling itself is now a sport contested in numerous international, national, regional, and local events. Our discussion reviewed the growth of these events, including the most prestigious of these, the ADCC Submission Fighting World Championship.
We examined where grappling is headed in the next decade, its exponential growth in this decade, how the sport is reaching a critical mass in popularity and participation, and the subsequent increase of prize money for the athletes in these events.
We also discussed the rise of newer organizations, such as FIJJA (Federation International of Jiu-Jitsu Association). With headquarters in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and a head office in Abu Dhabi, FIJJA is setting up an international professional jiu-jitsu circuit. It is organizing the Abu Dhabi Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship and numerous continental and regional qualifiers for that world championship event, which is scheduled to take place April 15-17, 2010, in Abu Dhabi. Their next qualifier, the Abu Dhabi Pro World Trials - Africa, takes place this Saturday, December 5, in Kempton Park, South Africa.
In addition, we discussed the possibility of a grappling event being held during or alongside the 2016 Summer Olympics, which take place in Rio de Janeiro, a great world capital of grappling. And we touched on the lack of an international central body governing all of grappling, the need for the various grappling bodies to work together, and more.
