No Holds Barred: Steve Mocco
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Steve Mocco.
A two-time NCAA Div. I heavyweight wrestling champion and a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team, Steve is one of the latest of the many elite wrestlers who are making the transition to mixed martial arts. He is now training full-time with American Top Team and hopes to make his MMA debut in the near future.
We spoke with Steve Mocco by phone Friday about this transition from wrestling to MMA and his training at American Top Team, which he said is "a real good fit for me and a natural move."
We discussed his training in submission and standup fighting, his background in judo, why he decided to go into MMA now, his plans to start fighting professionally, what those running wrestling can do to retain some of the elite athletes who are becoming MMA fighters, and more.

No Holds Barred: Evgeni Kogan on Fedor Retiring and the Future of M-1 Global

On June 21, M-1 Global held a major card in St. Petersburg, Russia, headlined by the first-round knockout by the legend Fedor Emelianenko over Pedro Rizzo. Right after that fight, Fedor announced his retirement as an active fighter.
We spoke with Evgeni Kogan by Skype Tuesday about this card and Fedor's retirement. We discussed Fedor's legacy as a fighter, whether or not he can be considered the best MMA fighter of all time, and if anyone else could ever match his ten-year unbeaten streak against top opposition. We also discussed the other fights on this card, including the third-round TKO win by Kenny Garner over Guram Gugenishvili to capture the M-1 heavyweight title, and the first-round heel hook victory by Musa Khamanaev over Daniel Weichel to win the M-1 lightweight title. And we discussed Jeff Monson's submission win over Denis Komkin and Monson's epic ring entrance as the Soviet national anthem played in the arena.

No Holds Barred: Rose Gracie and Gracie Worlds; ONE FC Review
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Rose Gracie about the submission-only grappling event, the Gracie Worlds. And we review the historic ONE FC: Destiny of Warriors card, which took place June 23 at the Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Gracie Worlds will take place at TheFitExpo on Saturday, July 14, and Sunday, July 15, at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California. The gi tournament, including superfights, is on July 14, while the no-gi tournament, also including superfights, is on July 15. In both these tournaments, the only way to win is by submission, as there are no judges or points scored. If there is no submission, neither competitor advances. The adult division matches have 15-minute time limits, while in the finals there is no time limit.
We spoke with Rose Gracie by phone Wednesday about this event and why these rules, which she says come from her late grandfather, Helio Gracie, are needed to revitalize jiu-jitsu. In her event, she said in this interview. "100 percent of the outcome of the matches [is] in the hands of the competitor."
In addition, we discussed the need for drug-testing in jiu-jitsu and grappling, the growing media coverage of her tournaments, the real relation between jiu-jitsu and MMA, and more.

No Holds Barred: Paul Johnson on Protesting Solitary Confinement of Floyd Mayweather
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with former boxer and long-time activist for boxers' rights, Paul Johnson.
Although based in Minnesota, Paul Johnson is now in Las Vegas, Nevada, holding a one-man protest in front of the Clark County Detention Center, where boxer Floyd Mayweather is serving a three-month sentence for domestic violence. Even though the charge for which Mayweather was convicted is only a misdemeanor, Mayweather has been placed in solitary confinement, which Paul Johnson calls "unfair and inhumane treatment."
We spoke with Paul Johnson by phone Wednesday afternoon about why he feels so strongly on this issue that he has traveled to Las Vegas to protest in front of this facility.
Paul Johnson also has long been involved in the struggle to form a boxers' union. We discussed the prospects for that, and his views on the proposal by U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) to form a United States Boxing Commission (USBC) to oversee professional boxing in the U.S.
The view of Paul Johnson is that what is needed instead of a USBC is the formation of a corporation like the NFL, NBA, etc., which would involve promoters, boxers, trainers, managers, sanctioning bodies, and officials, and have collective bargaining for boxers. We thus discussed how that could occur and how likely it is to happen.

Boxer Protests Unfair Treatment of Floyd Mayweather

Former middleweight boxer Paul Johnson feels so strongly about the treatment of Floyd Mayweather by correction officials in Las Vegas that he left his home in Minnesota to protest in front of the Clark County Detention Center.
Mr. Johnson believes that Floyd Mayweather should serve the full three month sentence imposed by the court for domestic violence. However, the court determined that his actions were a misdemeanor and Mr. Johnson says he should be treated the same as other misdemeanor offenders. He is not. Floyd Mayweather is put in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day, which Mr. Johnson believes is unfair and inhumane treatment. His protest is designed to urge the Clark County Detention Center to find an alternative.
Correction officials in Las Vegas say that Floyd Mayweather is in solitary confinement for his own protection from other inmates in the general population. Johnson’s response is that if the Clark County Detention Center can’t facilitate Mayweather’s isolation other than solitary confinement they should transfer him to a facility which can. Former middleweight boxer Paul Johnson feels so strongly about the treatment of Floyd Mayweather by correction officials in Las Vegas that he left his home in Minnesota to protest in front of the Clark County Detention Center.
Mr. Johnson believes that Floyd Mayweather should serve the full three month sentence imposed by the court for domestic violence. However, the court determined that his actions were a misdemeanor and Mr. Johnson says he should be treated the same as other misdemeanor offenders. He is not. Floyd Mayweather is put in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day, which Mr. Johnson believes is unfair and inhumane treatment. His protest is designed to urge the Clark County Detention Center to find an alternative.
Correction officials in Las Vegas say that Floyd Mayweather is in solitary confinement for his own protection from other inmates in the general population. Johnson’s response is that if the Clark County Detention Center can’t facilitate Mayweather’s isolation other than solitary confinement they should transfer him to a facility which can. After all, the bird man of Alcatraz was isolated from the general population and was not put in the solitary confinement.

No Holds Barred: Heath Sims, Ole Laursen, Lee Li at ONE Asia MMA Summit 2012
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents three more interviews conducted at the historic ONE Asia MMA Summit 2012 in Singapore, with Heath Sims, Ole Laursen, and Lee Li.A member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling team, and a former co-owner of the Team Quest MMA facility, Heath Sims is now based in Singapore and is an instructor in wrestling and MMA at Evolve MMA.
Ole Laursen is a former kickboxer, a current MMA fighter, and owner of the Legacy Gym.
Lee Li, who is also our Asian correspondent, is the founder and editor of the web site MMA in Asia.
We spoke with them on June 3, the final day of the ONE Asia MMA Summit 2012.
"I think the most important part of this event was everyone came to together and realized the same vision of growing the sport here in Asia," said Heath Sims in his interview. "It's not a fantasy anymore -- it's happening." We also discussed the role of wrestling and wrestlers in MMA, his transition to living in Singapore, and more.
Ole Laursen discussed how MMA "is coming back home to Asia" and will have no limit, plans for him to fight in Manila, his new gym in the Philippines, and the importance of the ONE Asia MMA Summit 2012 as both a gym owner and a fighter.
Lee Li discussed the significance of the ONE Asia MMA Summit 2012, the need for gyms to develop fighters and prepare them properly to enter the professional ranks, the role of amateur MMA, the growth of MMA all over Asia, the possibility of ONE FC running an event in Japan, and what works in different countries.
In addition, we read and discuss the statement issued by Bibiano Fernandes, the Dream bantamweight champion, rebutting media reports which he called "false" which claimed that he had signed with the UFC.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti on the Pacquiao-Bradley Debacle and Scandal
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our senior correspondent and the veteran martial artist John Perretti.
This past Saturday, June 9, once again we saw an outrageous decision in a major boxing match held in Las Vegas, Nevada. With about 99 percent of those watching the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley fight agreeing that Pacquiao had clearly won the 12-round fight, two of the three judges incredibly gave it to Bradley, giving him a split decision victory, and again exposing the horrific governance in the sport of boxing.
We spoke with John Perretti Monday afternoon by phone about boxing's latest debacle and scandal. We discussed the issue of whether this absurd verdict was the result of incompetence or corruption, and what we actually know now. We examined the role of gambling in fixing results in sports in general. We discussed why having the Nevada authorities investigate this, as promoter Bob Arum has called for, is, in John Perretti's words, like having "Hitler investigate Mussolini."
We also discussed the role of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, the need for the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate this matter, and the need for a U.S. National Combat Sports Commission to oversee professional boxing, mixed martial arts, and kickboxing. We noted the importance of social media in recording and mobilizing popular outrage about this scandal, why this will make it much harder for this debacle to be forgotten with time, and much more.
In addition, we open by presenting an update on the memorial activities for Grand Master Roger Clark, who passed last week at age 47 from a heart attack. In his honor, there will be a free memorial martial arts seminar this Saturday, June 16, at I.S. 292 at 301 Vermont Street in Brooklyn, New York.
