No Holds Barred: Demetrious Johnson-ONE Championship Conference Call
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents the international media conference call featuring MMA fighter Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson, who just signed with ONE Championship following an unofficial "trade" from his previous organization. He was the first UFC flyweight champion, holds the record for the most number of UFC title defenses, and was undefeated for seven years before dropping a close split decision in August. He is regarded as one of the top pound-for-pound MMA fighters of all time, and arguably the best at any weight of the past decade.
On this call, which took place Sunday U.S. time and Monday Singapore time, he was joined by Chatri Sityodtong, the chairman and CEO of ONE Championship. They both answered questions from the international media.

No Holds Barred: Chatri Sityodtong on Evolve University and ONE FC: Kings and Champions
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Evolve MMA founder Chatri Sityodtong.
It's a very busy time for Evolve MMA and Chatri. They not only have five fighters on the ONE FC: Kings and Champions card this Friday, April 5, in Singapore, but also have just started Evolve University, the world's largest online university for the martial arts and combat sports.
"The thing that makes Evolve University different from anything else out there is not only the scale of things that we've done, but every single one of our courses is taught by world champions," said Chatri in this interview, which was recorded over Skype Wednesday (Tuesday night New York time).
"From our research, we believe that we are the world's largest online university for martial arts taught by world champions exclusively," with courses in muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, boxing, MMA, submission grappling, and wrestling.
So far, the response has been phenomenal. In the first five days of its existence, the number of people who have signed up for Evolve University around the world is in the "thousands," he said.
While Evolve University aims at providing world-class instruction in these various disciplines, the emphasis is also on promoting the positive values of the martial arts.
"I want to be able to change millions of people's lives," he said. "Look at the senseless violence that we're in today. Every day you see every city, there are innocent victims being victimized for no reason. I really believe the world will be a safer place if everyone knew the basic principles of self-defense and learned martial arts and gained self-confidence and mental strength, and discipline, focus, and energy. And martial arts really does give you a warrior spirit. It gives you that desire to fight and conquer adversity that we all have in our lives."
The five Evolve MMA fighters who will be competing at Friday's ONE FC: Kings and Champions are Shinya Aoki, Eddie Ng, Leandro Issa, Alex Silva, and Jake Butler.
ONE FC: Kings and Champions will be held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore. The show will be televised live in Asia on Star Sports, which is available in 28 countries to an estimated 500 million viewers. It will also be webcast live around the world as a pay-per-view on http://www.onefc.livesport.tv.
In the main event, submission specialist Shinya Aoki will challenge for the ONE FC lightweight belt against champion and fellow Japanese fighter Kotetsu Boku. Evolve MMA's Eddie Ng of Hong Kong will take on the colorful Arnaud Lepont of France. Evolve MMA fighter and BJJ specialist Leandro Issa will try to rebound from a loss in his last fight when he faces Dagestan fighter Yusup Saadulaev. Another BJJ world champion and Evolve MMA fighter Alex Silva will fight Wushu world champion Rene Catalan. And American wrestler and now Evolve MMA fighter Jake Butler will fight the more experienced Swain Cangco of Saipan.
Also on the ONE FC: Kings and Champions card, in what is likely a classic striker vs. grappler matchup, the explosive Melvin Manhoef fights Brock Larson. The ONE FC Bantamweight Grand Prix continues with the semifinal round, as Jens Pulver fights Masakatsu Ueda and Kevin Belingon fights Thanh Vu. Also, Pakistani MMA pioneer Bashir Ahmad takes on Shannon Wiratchai of Thailand, and Chen Yun Ting of Malaysia fights muay Thai star Ronald Low of Singapore.
We also discussed this card with Chatri, as well as why martial arts are part of a lifelong process and journey, the growth of MMA in Asia, why Asia will become the epicenter of MMA, the current global duopoly in MMA, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Chatri Sityodtong on the Two Superpowers of MMA

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Chatri Sityodtong, the founder and chairman of the top martial arts organization in Asia, the Singapore-based Evolve MMA.
Chatri electrified the historic ONE Asia MMA Summit 2012 in Singapore with his presentation on June 2 in which he declared that in five to ten years, Asian MMA would surpass MMA in the U.S. and be "the center of the world."
We spoke with Chatri on June 3 between sessions on the final day of the Summit.
We discussed why he believes that there will be two superpowers in the world in MMA (ONE FC and UFC), why ONE FC will surpass everyone else in the world in popularity, where Asian MMA fighters currently rank on a worldwide basis, the development of amateur MMA in Asia, and more.
We also open with the sad news of the passing of Grand Master Roger Clark, who touched so many lives in the New York area by bringing martial arts to the youth.
In addition, we discuss the announcement that News Corporation was buying the 50 percent stake in Asia's ESPN STAR Sports which they did not already own, from The Walt Disney Company, the parent company of ESPN. We read a statement from Victor Cui, the CEO of ONE FC, which has a ten-year deal with ESPN STAR Sports, calling this "fantastic news."
And we encourage people to continue educating themselves on the issue of the dangers of performance-enhancing drugs in sports, and read a number of recent articles on this subject on MaxBoxing.com and FightOpinion.com, and in Sports Illustrated.

No Holds Barred: Chatri Sityodtong of Evolve MMA on the Asia MMA Revolution

Based in Singapore, he has also been a professional Muay Thai fighter, and is currently an instructor at Evolve MMA in Singapore, as well as a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the legendary Renzo Gracie.
Fighters from Evolve MMA have been competing in many competitions in several combat sports, including in mixed martial arts in the Singapore-based Martial Combat. The fights from that organization are televised throughout Asia on ESPN Star.
In addition, Evolve MMA is a founding member of the Asian Mixed Martial Arts Federation (AMMAF). This is the official governing body for the sport of MMA within Asia.
"Be on the lookout for the Asia MMA revolution," Chatri Sityodtong advised us during our lengthy interview conducted Tuesday by Skype. He explained how Evolve MMA has rapidly expanded during its brief existence, and is already regarded as one of the best academies in the world. We discussed both its staff, which includes dozens of world-class instructors in many disciplines, and its fighters, who are finding success in MMA competitions all around the world.
We also discussed the level of competition in Martial Combat, which recently has completed its first season, and what is expected in 2011. We analyzed what is happening in MMA throughout Asia, including in China and Japan, and what we expect to happen in those countries.
In addition, we discussed Evolve fighter Yodsanan Sor Nanthachai Sityodtong, a.k.a. Yodsanan 3-K Battery, who held the WBA super featherweight title in boxing from 2002 to 2005, and now is training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and may fight professionally in mixed martial arts.
There is a lot more to this discussion, which both introduces mixed martial arts in Asia outside Japan to those who are unfamiliar with it, as well as analyzes the sport there and forecasts Asia as becoming a major world center for the sport.
