No Holds Barred: Chatri Sityodtong of Evolve MMA on the Asia MMA Revolution

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Chatri Sityodtong, the founder of the largest mixed martial arts academy and martial arts training organization in Asia, Evolve MMA.

Based in Singapore, he has also been a professional Muay Thai fighter, and is currently an instructor at Evolve MMA in Singapore, as well as a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the legendary Renzo Gracie.

Fighters from Evolve MMA have been competing in many competitions in several combat sports, including in mixed martial arts in the Singapore-based Martial Combat. The fights from that organization are televised throughout Asia on ESPN Star.

In addition, Evolve MMA is a founding member of the Asian Mixed Martial Arts Federation (AMMAF). This is the official governing body for the sport of MMA within Asia.

"Be on the lookout for the Asia MMA revolution," Chatri Sityodtong advised us during our lengthy interview conducted Tuesday by Skype. He explained how Evolve MMA has rapidly expanded during its brief existence, and is already regarded as one of the best academies in the world. We discussed both its staff, which includes dozens of world-class instructors in many disciplines, and its fighters, who are finding success in MMA competitions all around the world.

We also discussed the level of competition in Martial Combat, which recently has completed its first season, and what is expected in 2011. We analyzed what is happening in MMA throughout Asia, including in China and Japan, and what we expect to happen in those countries.

In addition, we discussed Evolve fighter Yodsanan Sor Nanthachai Sityodtong, a.k.a. Yodsanan 3-K Battery, who held the WBA super featherweight title in boxing from 2002 to 2005, and now is training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and may fight professionally in mixed martial arts.

There is a lot more to this discussion, which both introduces mixed martial arts in Asia outside Japan to those who are unfamiliar with it, as well as analyzes the sport there and forecasts Asia as becoming a major world center for the sport.
