No Holds Barred: Joe Soto-Joe Warren Bellator Preview, Segura-Calderon Fight of Year Candidate, World Combat Games, and More

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the important Joe Soto-Joe Warren Bellator featherweight title fight, discusses the Giovanni Segura-Ivan Calderon fight of the year candidate in boxing, explains the unity of all the combat sports, and analyzes more recent events in the combat sports.

Bellator featherweight champion Joe Soto will defend his title against Bellator featherweight tournament winner Joe Warren Thursday, September 2, in San Antonio, Texas, on a card which will air live in the U.S. on Fox Sports Net. The 33-year-old Warren, a 2006 world champion in Greco-Roman wrestling, is 5-1 in mixed martial arts, and has the edge in level of competition in mixed martial arts and accomplishments in wrestling. But Soto, at just age 23, is unbeaten in mixed martial arts at 9-0, winning four of his fights by submission and four by knockout. This is a fight which mixed martial arts fans should not miss.

Many people likely missed another fight of the year candidate in boxing this past Saturday, August 28, as Giovanni Segura knocked out previously-unbeaten Ivan Calderon to unify two 108-pound belts. We discuss this all-action fight, which took place in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.

We also compare the Royce Gracie-Art Jimmerson fight at the first Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1993 to the Randy Couture-James Toney fight this past Saturday, analyze the rise of fighters from Russia and Eastern Europe in mixed martial arts, preview important boxing matches this weekend involving 105-pound champion Roman Gonzalez of Nicaragua and 130-pound champion Roman Martinez of Puerto Rico, note the Pacquiao-Margarito media tour and what this fight is doing to boxing, discuss the first-ever SportAccord World Combat Games which are underway in Beijing, and much more in the world of combat sports.

No Holds Barred: Kevin Jackson on King Mo, Bobby Lashley, Wrestlers, and MMA

Photo: Esther Lin/Strikeforce

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the Olympic gold medalist and two-time world champion freestyle wrestler, and former mixed martial arts fighter, Kevin Jackson, who is the head wrestling coach for the legendary Iowa State Cyclones.

Two of the top-level wrestlers he trained while at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, "King" Mo Lawal and Bobby Lashley, both suffered their first professional defeats in mixed martial arts on the August 21 Strikeforce card.

We thus spoke on Thursday afternoon about what went wrong in their fights. Coach Jackson explained the technical errors they made in their fights, what may have been mistakes they made in their training in preparation for these fights, and why a seminar for elite wrestlers who have become mixed martial arts fighters would be helpful. He also argued that the wrestling community should regard these former wrestlers who are now fighters as "heroes", how an opportunity to do so has thus far been lost, and more.

No Holds Barred: King Mo Lawal

Photo: Esther Lin/Strikeforce

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with the champion freestyle and college wrestler, and mixed martial arts fighter and now former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, "King" Mo Lawal.

"King" Mo suffered his first professional defeat on August 21 in the main event of a Strikeforce mixed martial arts card, which took place at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, and was telecast live in the U.S. on Showtime. After winning the first two rounds of his bout with Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante, he was stopped in the third round with a series of knees, punches, and elbows. The official time of the TKO stoppage was 1:14 of round three. Thus, "King" Mo, in first title defense, dropped the Strikeforce light heavyweight belt to Feijao.

We spoke with "King" Mo Tuesday afternoon by phone about this fight and what went wrong. He detailed the technical mistakes he made in it, especially his failure to utilize fully his world-class wrestling technique. We discussed his upcoming surgery to repair a torn ACL, which will sideline him for about six to nine months. We also discussed how he needs to improve his striking technique, why he wore an Iowa State wrestling T-shirt on the telecast, his relations with the wrestling community, his plans for a comeback next year, and more.

In addition, we open by commenting on the leading mixed martial arts fight of the year candidate for 2010, the five-round war between Sengoku middleweight champion Jorge Santiago and Kazuo Misaki at SRC 14 on Sunday, August 22, at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan. This card was shown live in the U.S. on HDNet and will be repeated Friday, August 27.

No Holds Barred: The Margarito Scandal

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the ongoing saga of disgraced boxer Antonio Margarito, who was denied a boxing license by the California State Athletic Commission on Wednesday, August 18.

Margarito and his then-trainer, Javier Capetillo, originally had their boxing licenses revoked because a plaster-like substance was found in Margarito's hand wraps just prior to his January 2009 fight with Shane Mosley in Los Angeles. Margarito has claimed that he was unaware that his hand wraps were being loaded by his trainer, although few people have believed him. Margarito reapplied for a license in Nevada, which then deferred to California, and at the California commission hearing on Wednesday, they voted 5-1 not to grant him a license.

Now Margarito's promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, will try to get him licensed in Texas for a proposed November 13 fight with Manny Pacquiao.

Many people in the combat sports world are outraged that Margarito may be allowed to fight again anywhere. Dr. Margaret Goodman, our medical correspondent and the former head of the Nevada State Athletic Commission Medical Advisory Board, wrote us this statement on Thursday, August 19, about the Margarito situation:

"I think it is flat out a disregard for the system in place. If Margarito and his promoter disagree with California's decision, then fight it in court. This is just another reason why safety issues in boxing take a back seat again and again.

"This is a flagrant demonstration of commission jurisdiction-shopping. This should have been a court case from day one. California did their best, and I believe acted fairly in such an egregious situation.

"If Texas grants Margarito a license, this is nothing new, as Texas has done this sort of thing before. But, the ABC (Association of Boxing Commissions) should consider dropping Texas for taking advantage of this situation. I also think that if Pacquiao fights a fighter on suspension, then he should be held accountable as well."

Also, after the ABC issued a statement late Thursday, August 19, which essentially gave Texas the green light to license Margarito, Dr. Goodman wrote us again with this statement:

"It is another reason why boxing regulation is in such trouble. There is no standardization. A fighter can be found by one commission to illegally endanger the life of his opponent yet be heralded by another commission. It is why boxing and MMA will not stop being niche sports until there is true federal oversight."

We thus discuss this ongoing scandal, and what it means for the ever-declining sport of boxing.

Photo: Esther Lin/Strikeforce

In the main event, Strikeforce light heavyweight champion "King" Mo Lawal (7-0) will defend his belt for the first time, facing Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante (9-2). In the co-feature, Tim Kennedy (12-2) will fight Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and ADCC champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza (12-2-1) for the vacant Strikeforce middleweight (185 pounds) title. No Holds Barred: Daniel Cormier, MMA Marathon Man

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Daniel Cormier, the 2007 world bronze medalist and two-time U.S. Olympian in freestyle wrestling, who is 4-0 with three knockouts and one submission victory as a heavyweight mixed martial arts fighter.

In a schedule reminiscent of the early days of boxing, he has scored victories in fights on July 31 and August 13, and will fight again this coming Saturday, August 21.

On July 31, Daniel flew to Australia to score a first-round TKO over Lucas Browne, and capture the XMMA heavyweight title. Two weeks later, on August 13, in Mescalero, New Mexico, he defeated Tony Johnson with a first-round rear naked choke submission to win the King of the Cage heavyweight title. And on August 21, he will face Jason Riley (9-3) at the Strikeforce show at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

We spoke with Daniel Cormier Monday about this marathon schedule and all these fights. He is signed to fight for Strikeforce, and we discussed his plans to work his way up to a title shot in their very talented heavyweight division. He explained just how developed he thinks he is as a mixed martial arts fighter, and when he believes he will be ready for a title fight. As a world-class wrestler, and arguably the best wrestler currently fighting in mixed martial arts, he also discussed what techniques he needs to improve to become a world-class mixed martial arts fighter, and much more.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti Critiques Pascal-Dawson and Arreola-Quezada

(Photo courtesy of Vic and Jordi Marie Theriault)

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with former world kickboxing champion, former UFC and Extreme Fighting matchmaker, and our senior correspondent, John Perretti, about the Jean Pascal-Chad Dawson and Cris Arreola-Manny Quezada fights from this past weekend.

After falling behind on the scorecards, Chad Dawson stepped up his attack against Jean Pascal in the eleventh round of their fight on Saturday, August 14, at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Dawson landed a solid left uppercut that staggered Pascal, who then tried to retreat. A little later in the round, Dawson, a left-handed fighter, and Pascal, a right-handed fighter, clashed heads, opening a wide and bloody cut over Dawson's right eye. On the advice of the ringside physician, referee Michael Griffin, who had ruled the head butt accidental, stopped the fight, and by rule it went to the scorecards.

Few were surprised that all three judges had it for Pascal, who, with this technical decision, successfully defended his WBC light heavyweight title and improved his record to 26-1 with 16 KOs. This was the first professional loss for Dawson, whose record fell to 29-1 with 17 KOs.

But was this fight-ending head butt accidental, or was it intentional by Pascal, as Dawson and his camp charged after the fight? The latter verdict would have meant that the popular, Montreal-based Pascal would have been disqualified in his hometown and in a fight he was winning through the first ten rounds.

John Perretti argues that not only was the head butt by Pascal "premeditated" to save himself from losing or even being knocked out, but that he "drags it and points his forehead across that eye and cuts him wide open."

We discuss this fight and the controversy surrounding it in-depth, as well as another week of atrocious announcing by the HBO "dinosaur" crew.

Also, on Friday, August 13, heavyweights and training partners Cris Arreola and Manny Quezada fought at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California, in the main event on ESPN2's "Friday Night Fights". With both fighters coming off losses, this fight seemed designed to showcase Arreola and get him another major fight following losses to WBC champ Vitali Klitschko and former cruiserweight champ Tomasz Adamek.

While Arreola did win a unanimous 12-round decision against the smaller and older Quezada, and up his record to 29-2 with 25 KOs, once again he looked unimpressive and out-of-shape, and even displayed little power.

What does this all mean for the boxing career of Arreola, and the sport of boxing in America? We discuss these issues as well, offering conclusions that are dire about the future of this declining and self-destructing sport.

No Holds Barred: Mark Pavelich of MFC on Ontario Allowing MMA

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Mark Pavelich, the owner and president of the Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC), about the news, announced Saturday, August 14, by the Ministry of Consumer Services of Ontario, Canada, that "Ontario is taking steps to allow professional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) events in the province." The first sanctioned event in Ontario is expected to be held in 2011.

We spoke by phone Saturday afternoon, just hours after this announcement was made public, about the significance of this development for Ontario, the most populous province in Canada, and Canada as a whole. We discussed what political and legal steps must still be taken for mixed martial arts events to become sanctioned and actually take place in Ontario, and the role of the Ontario Athletic Commission and its head, Ken Hayashi, who has been a long-time opponent of mixed martial arts. The always-outspoken Mark Pavelich also explained why, when mixed martial arts is finally sanctioned in Ontario, it will be the Maximum Fighting Championship which will probably run the most events in that province. And we commented upon some of the politics within mixed martial arts, the highly questionable and controversial positions taken by regulators in Quebec and Vancouver towards mixed martial arts, and more.

We also discussed the upcoming MFC 26: Retribution card, which takes place Friday, September 10, in Westman Place at the Keystone Centre in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, and will be televised live on HDNet. On that card, MFC lightweight champ Antonio McKee, who is unbeaten in the last seven years, will face Luciano Azevedo. McKee has vowed to retire if he does not win by submission, knockout, or TKO.

No Holds Barred: Jay Larkin Tribute, Bellator 24 Review

(Jay Larkin at left, May, 2005, in New York.)

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman offers a tribute to Jay Larkin, who was the head of the Showtime boxing program for over two decades, and the CEO of the now-defunct International Fight League mixed martial arts organization. Jay passed away Monday, August 9, from brain cancer, at the age of 59. We also discuss the use of green tea as one means to prevent and battle cancer.

We next review the Bellator 24 mixed martial arts show, which took place Thursday, August 12, in Hollywood, Florida. Their 115-pound women's tournament kicked off with impressive submission victories by Megumi Fujii over Carla Esparza, and Jessica Aguilar over Lynn Alvarez. We also discuss the first-round TKOs by Bellator middleweight champion Hector Lombard over Herbert Goodman in a non-title fight, and Neil Grove over Eddie Sanchez in the first bout of the Bellator heavyweight tournament.

And we discuss two important events for mixed martial arts in New York City: the MMA World Expo on November 12-13, and the talk by former UFC executive Campbell McLaren Tuesday, August 17, at New York Jiu-Jitsu about how the UFC got started.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti on Alexander-Kotelnik and Cloud-Johnson; Arreola-Quezada Preview

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with former world kickboxing champion, former UFC and Extreme Fighting matchmaker, and our current senior correspondent, John Perretti, about the Devon Alexander-Andriy Kotelnik and Tavoris Cloud-Glen Johnson fights, which took place August 7 in St. Louis, Missouri.

Alexander (21-0, 13 KOs) retained his WBC and IBF 140-pound titles with a unanimous decision over Kotelnik (31-4-1, 13 KOs). Cloud (21-0, 18 KOs) retained his IBF light heavyweight title with a unanimous decision over Johnson (50-14-2, 34 KOs).

As is our usual approach, we candidly delved into the lessons learned about the talents of each of these fighters at the current stages of their careers. We analyzed some of their major shortcomings, especially those of the 23-year-old Alexander, whom some have touted as the next big superstar in boxing. We criticized the way the HBO announcers called and scored these fights. We explained why, at this point at least, Alexander is likely to fall short in any title unification fights with WBA champion Amir Khan or the unbeaten WBO champion Timothy Bradley.

Also, this coming Friday, August 13, heavyweights Cristobal Arreola (28-2, 25 KOs) and Manuel Quezada (29-5, 18 KOs), who have trained together and have both lost their previous fights, will fight at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California, in the main event on ESPN2's "Friday Night Fights". We spoke with both Arreola and Quezada on a recent media conference call about their approaches to this important fight.

No Holds Barred: Evgeni Kogan, Byron Byrd, Daniel Vizcaya, Kenny Garner, M-1 Global Selection Americas Semifinals Review

(Photo: Kenny Garner def. Andrei Kapilou. Photo by Zack Lynch c/o M-1 Global.)

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the M-1 Selection Americas Semifinals, which were held August 7 at Bally's in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This event has helped establish M-1 Global as yet another major mixed martial arts promotion in America.

We interviewed M-1 Director of Operations Evgeni Kogan, and three of the victorious fighters: light heavyweights Byron Byrd and Daniel Vizcaya, and heavyweight Kenny "Deuce" Garner.

We also have an excerpt from the news conference with Fedor Emelianenko, his manager Vadim Finkelchtein, and Evgeni Kogan. Video of the entire press conference is expected to be posted online shortly.

In our discussion with Evgeni Kogan, he explained how M-1 Global is using this structure of regional tournaments around the world to find "the next big thing", what to expect from rising star and M-1 fighter Magomed Shikhshabekov of Russia, plans for more joint M-1 Global-Strikeforce shows, plans for the next fights for Fedor Emelianenko, why it is "more than likely" that the M-1 Global-Strikeforce relationship will continue "long into the future", why Fedor will be fighting and appearing in the U.S. much more in the near future, and more.

Our interviews with the victorious fighters had them review their wins, discuss their histories and techniques, and introduce themselves to those who have not yet seen them fight.

These semifinal fights were eliminators for the M-1 Selection Americas Finals, which will be held Saturday, September 18, 2010, also at Bally's in Atlantic City. The winners will become the M-1 Selection 2010 Champions in their respective weight classes.

No Holds Barred: Devon Alexander, Andriy Kotelnik, Don King

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the August 7 fight between the unbeaten WBC/IBF 140-pound champion Devon Alexander (20-0, 13 KOs) and former world titleholder Andriy Kotelnik (31-3-1, 13 KOs). This fight will headline a card at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri, and be shown live in the U.S. on HBO.

The 23-year-old Alexander, fighting in his hometown, is one of the rising young stars in boxing. The 33-year-old Kotelnik, originally from Lviv, Ukraine, and now based in Germany, is a crafty veteran, but who dropped his last fight, and the WBA title, to Amir Khan in July 2009. This fight thus could be a precursor to a much-anticipated series of title unification fights in this talented weight division.

We spoke with both Devon Alexander and Andriy Kotelnik on a recent media conference call about this fight. We also heard some heated comments from Kevin Cunningham, who trains and manages Alexander, and Stacey McKinley, who trains Kotelnik. And we learned about the joys of summertime from Don King, who is the lead promoter of this fight.

In addition, we open the show with a blistering critique of those are actually disrespecting Floyd Mayweather Jr. by calling him a "chicken" because the recent non-negotiations for a fight with Manny Pacquiao failed to produce an agreement for such a fight. We critique the latest ramblings from Pacquiao the politician, who opposed taking Olympic-style drug tests, but now as a member of the congress in the Philippines claims to be trying to help their Olympic program. And we blast those, including apparently Pacquiao, who want to see him fight the modern-day Luis Resto, the disgraced Antonio Margarito.

No Holds Barred: Donovan Craig Goes to Russia

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Donovan Craig, the editor-in-chief of Fight! Magazine. We opened by discussing his recent trip to Russia, where he covered the M-1 Selection 2010 - Eastern and Western Europe Finals, on July 22 in Moscow, Russia, and interviewed the legendary mixed martial arts fighter, Fedor Emelianenko.

In a lively and lengthy interview, we discussed the high level of mixed martial arts fighters in these M-1 events in Europe, including the unbeaten Magomed Shikhshabekov, who won the super fight at the event he covered. We discussed the potential for the next great wave of mixed martial arts fighters to come from Eastern Europe, and why that is. We also delved a bit into the history, politics, and economics of the collapse of the old Soviet Union, and how that affects the combat sports. We also discussed boxing and mixed martial arts, and much more.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti on Marquez-Diaz 2, HBO, Weightlifting, and More

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with former world kickboxing champion, former UFC and Extreme Fighting matchmaker, and our current senior correspondent, John Perretti.

We covered a wide variety of topics, starting with the brilliant performance by Juan Manuel Marquez in his 12-round unanimous decision win Saturday, July 31, in his lightweight title fight rematch with Juan Diaz. We analyzed the inspiring technique used by Marquez in dominating this fight, despite him being a decade older than the 26-year-old Diaz. We also skewered the HBO announcers, who failed to focus on what Marquez was doing in the ring, and instead talked more about the likable but more limited Diaz.

Our lengthy discussion also broke down the knockout victory by Dmitry Pirog over Danny Jacobs in a middleweight title fight, and the failure of HBO to interview the winner afterwards; the unimpressive decision win by lightweight/junior welterweight Robert Guerrero over an aging Joel Casamayor; and the dominant decision victory by Jorge Linares over Rocky Juarez in a lightweight fight.

Besides talking boxing, we ended by discussing its cousins, the combat sports of wrestling and grappling. We discussed why it may be as long as 50 or 100 years before submission wrestling or grappling can become a major spectator sport. And we heard about recent developments in another related sport, weightlifting, and why combat sports aficionados should be paying attention to that sport as well.
