No Holds Barred: Devon Alexander, Andriy Kotelnik, Don King
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the August 7 fight between the unbeaten WBC/IBF 140-pound champion Devon Alexander (20-0, 13 KOs) and former world titleholder Andriy Kotelnik (31-3-1, 13 KOs). This fight will headline a card at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri, and be shown live in the U.S. on HBO.
The 23-year-old Alexander, fighting in his hometown, is one of the rising young stars in boxing. The 33-year-old Kotelnik, originally from Lviv, Ukraine, and now based in Germany, is a crafty veteran, but who dropped his last fight, and the WBA title, to Amir Khan in July 2009. This fight thus could be a precursor to a much-anticipated series of title unification fights in this talented weight division.
We spoke with both Devon Alexander and Andriy Kotelnik on a recent media conference call about this fight. We also heard some heated comments from Kevin Cunningham, who trains and manages Alexander, and Stacey McKinley, who trains Kotelnik. And we learned about the joys of summertime from Don King, who is the lead promoter of this fight.
In addition, we open the show with a blistering critique of those are actually disrespecting Floyd Mayweather Jr. by calling him a "chicken" because the recent non-negotiations for a fight with Manny Pacquiao failed to produce an agreement for such a fight. We critique the latest ramblings from Pacquiao the politician, who opposed taking Olympic-style drug tests, but now as a member of the congress in the Philippines claims to be trying to help their Olympic program. And we blast those, including apparently Pacquiao, who want to see him fight the modern-day Luis Resto, the disgraced Antonio Margarito.
