No Holds Barred: Royler Gracie
The Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2010 is set to take place April 8 through April 11 at the Bren Events Center at the University of California, Irvine. This is the largest jiu-jitsu tournament in the world, and we discussed why it remains so popular.
We also discussed the potential for jiu-jitsu to emerge as a popular spectator sport, why jiu-jitsu can become bigger than mixed martial arts, the relation of jiu-jitsu to mixed martial arts, his own preference between these two sports in which he has competed, why he believes that his cousin Renzo Gracie will triumph in his upcoming UFC fight with Matt Hughes, his many current activities, and much more.
There is much wisdom to be gained from this discussion with one of the legendary members of the legendary Gracie family, and we have it right here for you on No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti on the Dirrell-Abraham Mess
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the legendary matchmaker and martial artist, and our senior correspondent, John Perretti, about the Andre Dirrell-Arthur Abraham fight. This fight took place Saturday, March 27, in Detroit, Michigan, and was televised in the U.S. on Showtime as part of the Super Six super middleweight tournament. In that fight, Dirrell was outboxing Abraham and, after 10 rounds, was far ahead on the scorecards, when Abraham hit Dirrell after he had slipped to the canvas and was still down. Abraham was then disqualified for an intentional foul which knocked Dirrell out.
We dissect this situation by noting how Dirrell, at the time of the stoppage, had been fighting the best fight of his professional career. We discuss his technique, timing, and execution, which took Abraham, the favorite before the fight, out of his game plan. We focus on the closing scenario itself, and whether or not Dirrell could be accused of acting and pretending he was more hurt than he was. We discuss the specious and contradictory justifications put forth by Abraham for the decisive, illegal blow. We again rail against yet another example of ineptitude by the referee in this fight, which seems to be the norm for many referees in both boxing and mixed martial arts. We examine the possible career-changing effects of the concussion suffered by Dirrell, and question the medical attention he received right after the fight. And we relate this latest fiasco in what should have been a classic fight to how fighters are abused, to the continued decline of boxing, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Mikey Burnett, Fighter
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the legendary mixed martial arts fighter Mikey Burnett.
A veteran of the UFC in the 1990s and a member of the world-renowned Lion's Den, Mikey tried a return to action on "The Ultimate Fighter" television show in 2006, but with very disappointing results. Injuries ended his comeback, which are now the subject of a lawsuit.
Despite these injuries, Mikey continues to stay active, as co-owner and a trainer at the Oklahoma Fight Club in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, near Tulsa.
We spoke with Mikey by telephone Friday afternoon, beginning with a little fun chat about country music, of which we are both fans. But this lengthy discussion mainly focused on his fighting career and his plans, including the controversy around his appearance on "The Ultimate Fighter". He explained the type of pain he has to endure, which is the result of the injuries he suffered while fighting, and how he copes with it. We discussed the culture on that show which led to his antics on it. He stressed that he never wanted to file a lawsuit, but explained why he felt it was necessary. He told us of his current activities, including his training in jiu-jitsu to go with his background in boxing, wrestling, and submission fighting, and much more.
This is the type of story which is among the most important in mixed martial arts, about the real life of a real fighter, and we have it for you right here on No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti on the Glory of Wrestling
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with the legendary matchmaker and martial artist, and our senior correspondent, John Perretti.
This past weekend, like so many others in many capacities in the combat sports, we both watched the telecast of the 2010 NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships. We use an analysis of that event, which John Perretti said left him "incredibly impressed," as a starting point to discuss wrestling, wrestlers, mixed martial arts, and the combat sports in general.
Among the topics we discuss are the awesome athleticism of the top college wrestlers, some of the most notable wrestlers from this event, the little-noted story of the passion of the coaches, controversies and confusion over college wrestling rules such as riding time and stalling, and the advantages wrestlers from outside the U.S. have in international competition because they train in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling exclusively and not the American folkstyle which is used in the schools and colleges in America. We also discuss the transition of wrestlers into mixed martial arts, citing positive and negative lessons from the experiences of some of those world-class wrestlers who have attempted that transition. And we note some of the problems with the television production of this event which prevented its full appreciation by the viewers, as well as much more.

No Holds Barred: Amir Khan, Paulie Malignaggi, Arthur Abraham, Andre Dirrell, Kristal Hart, Weekend Boxing Review
Wladimir Klitschko, the holder of two of the major heavyweight titles, and generally regarded as the best of the weak heavyweight division, punctuated another dominant performance by closing the show Saturday, March 20, in Dusseldorf, Germany, with a stunning knockout of challenger Eddie Chambers with just seconds remaining in their fight. We comment on that fight, as well as the state of the heavyweight division. We also discuss the brutal first-round knockout by welterweight Randall Bailey of Jackson Bonsu in Belgium, the horrifying absence of any medical assistance for Bonsu in the ring after the knockout, the victory by junior middleweight Sechew Powell in his rematch with Deandre Latimore, and the blimp-like physique of heavyweight contender and Olympic gold medalist Odlanier Solis.
This past Tuesday, at a news conference at Madison Square Garden in New York, we spoke with WBA 140-pound champion Amir Khan and challenger Paulie Malignaggi. They will fight there Saturday, May 15. The careers of both fighters are on the rebound after recent losses, and we asked them how they have been changing their approaches to fighting. We also previewed this fight with our colleague Kristal Hart of the Kristal Hart Show on Manhattan Neighborhood Network.
This coming Saturday, March 27, the Super Six super middleweight tournament enters its second round, as the unbeaten Arthur Abraham takes on Andre Dirrell at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan. This will be shown live on Showtime in the U.S. We spoke with both fighters on a recent media conference call to get their views on what to expect in this important fight.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti, Lou DiBella, and Drug Testing
Our discussion with Lou DiBella was recorded this Tuesday at Madison Square Garden in New York at the news conference announcing the May 15 Amir Khan-Paulie Malignaggi fight. Our main topic was the lack of credible drug testing in boxing, and the need for athletic commissions to adopt the methods used by the World Anti-Doping Agency, including random, unannounced blood and urine testing. DiBella emphatically called on the Association of Boxing Commissions to update their procedures to protect the clean athletes and catch the dope cheats. He called the lack of uniform health and safety standards for boxing in America "savage". He also plugged his fighter, Paulie Malignaggi, to win May 15. (More interviews from that news conference are forthcoming on No Holds Barred.)
On Thursday afternoon, we spoke with our senior correspondent, John Perretti, the former UFC matchmaker, Extreme Fighting founder, kickboxer, and martial arts legend. He had the misfortune of watching the entire Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey pay-per-view last Saturday, March 13.
The most charitable description he could come up for that show was "goofy". We discussed how this awful show, full of typical boxing mismatches, was actually an advertisement for mixed martial arts. We analyzed the non-effort of Clottey to win, and how once again the likes of promoter Arum and HBO were teaming up to enrich themselves with a pay-per-view while destroying boxing. We also discussed Pacquiao, whom Eddie said he does not trust, calling him "Pacquiao the politician", since he is running for Congress in the Philippines. We spoke of how Pacquiao, with a few official losses and some gift decisions, did not deserve to be named the top boxer of the past decade by supposed boxing journalists. And we called his refusal to take Olympic-style blood testing to detect doping a disgrace. John also briefly commented on the scandal in Japan involving now-former sumo wrestler and Yokozuna Asashoryu, which forced him to quit that sport, and much more.
We also play a brief excerpt from the media conference call of Thursday, March 18, announcing the drug testing program which will be used for the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Shane Mosley fight, which takes place May 1 in Las Vegas, Nevada. On that call were Travis T. Tygart, CEO of USADA (U.S. Anti-Doping Agency); Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions; and Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. Both fighters will be subject to random and unannounced blood and urine testing according to the protocols of the World Anti-Doping Agency, which USADA follows. We also rip the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which, after all this, still refuses to update its drug testing procedures.
You can play or download the complete and unedited audio transcript of that call here.
And we open with a brief recap of the first day of the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, which continues Friday, March 19, and concludes Saturday, March 20, at the Qwest Center Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska, with the finals being shown Saturday night in the U.S. on ESPN and the other sessions on ESPNU.

No Holds Barred: Kevin Jackson, Melvina Lathan
We spoke with Coach Jackson Wednesday morning, the day before the opening of the 2010 NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships, which takes place Thursday, March 18, to Saturday, March 20, at the Qwest Center Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska. He discussed the prospects for his team to win a national title at this event, as well as what he expects from Iowa State's top seeds, Jake Varner at 197 pounds and David Zabriskie at heavyweight. We also discussed what he expects from the rest of his team, and how they might fare at this tournament. And he explained why he, along with many others, views the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships as "the best wrestling tournament in the world."
We also spoke with Melvina Lathan, the chairwoman of the New York State Athletic Commission, Tuesday afternoon at Madison Square Garden at the news conference for the May 15 Amir Khan-Paulie Malignaggi fight. Our subject was not boxing, but the likelihood of New York State finally legalizing and sanctioning mixed martial arts after 13 years of an unjust law banning it. She confirmed for us that measures legalizing and sanctioning mixed martial arts are included in the proposed 2010-2011 budget, and discussed the timetable for when we may actually have sanctioned mixed martial arts events in New York after that budget is eventually adopted by the State Legislature.

No Holds Barred: Scott Coker, CEO of Strikeforce
There has been much said and written about the next events which Strikeforce will be having, and not all of it is based on fact. Some of it is downright misleading and hopelessly biased. So we decided to speak to the man himself about what Strikeforce is planning in order to get the truth.
After a Strikeforce Challengers event on Showtime on March 26 in Fresno, California, Strikeforce will return to CBS Saturday, April 17, with three title fights on a card at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Headlining that card will be the Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields taking on the former Pride two-division champion and a two-time U.S. Olympian in Greco-Roman wrestling, Dan Henderson. Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi will defend his belt against the unbeaten "King" Mo Lawal. And Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez will fight the Dream champion and submission master, Shinya Aoki of Japan, for the Strikeforce belt.
We spoke with Scott Coker not only about the importance of this loaded card, but also how it will definitely take place April 17 in Nashville and be shown live in the U.S. on CBS. We discussed their plans for their next major show, which will be May 15 from St. Louis, Missouri, and shown on Showtime, headlined by Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem fighting Brett Rogers, with more details on the title situation in that fight to be announced shortly.
We also discussed when he expects the top heavyweight mixed martial arts fighter in the world, Fedor Emelianenko, to return to action in Strikeforce, and the status of the co-promotion arrangement between Strikeforce and M-1 Global, of which Fedor is a partner. We talked about the overall importance of co-promotion in mixed martial arts, and the branding situation, where M-1 Global wanted it made clearer than it had been that they were co-promoting events with Strikeforce. And we discussed possible opponents for Fedor, including the colorful but controversial Josh Barnett, who is currently under suspension for a doping violation, and much more.
So you need not waste time with the rumor-mongers or purveyors of misinformation, because once we again we have the truth for you, right here on No Holds Barred.

Eddie Goldman and Ron Scott Stevens on Joey Reynolds Show
We had another lively, informative, and fun discussion not only, of course, about boxing, but also numerous other topics, some related and others not. Joey talked about the continuing woes facing society when there are so many people with no jobs, Eddie explained why he is very positive about the growing sport of roller derby, and Ron outlined his history as a playwright and boxing official. We discussed the problems of steroids and illegal and dangerous drugs in all of sports, and how they harm the health of the athletes. We noted how the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey fight this Saturday, March 13, at Cowboys Stadium in Texas, is taking place in a state with no mandatory drug testing, and how the refusal of Pacquiao to take state-of-the-art, Olympic-style blood testing for doping led to the cancellation of a proposed mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Ron also revealed that he wants to bring boxing to the new Nets' arena in Brooklyn, where he lives, and Eddie confirmed that he is indeed not just a sports journalist but a cultural critic.
You can play or download this here or download it here.
The "Joey Reynolds Show" is a national radio broadcast in New York on WOR 710 AM and on 100 other stations via the WOR Network. The show airs live beginning at 1 AM ET and runs to 5 AM ET. The show will soon be moving to television, so stay tuned for more details.

No Holds Barred: King Mo Lawal
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with the undefeated mixed martial arts fighter, and freestyle and college wrestling champion, "King" Mo Lawal.
With a record of 6-0 with 5 KOs, Mo Lawal will be getting what he has asked for on Saturday, April 17: a title shot against Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi (28-2-1). This will be one of three title fights on that Strikeforce card, which takes place at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, and will be broadcast live in the U.S. on CBS.
We spoke with Mo Lawal Monday night to get his take on what to expect in this fight. Confident, candid, and calm, he stated his case why he believes that he will emerge victorious in it. He explained what lessons he has drawn from the recent victories by Mousasi, and why he believes that his overall technique and athleticism are superior. As always, we also discussed some boxing and wrestling, and the status of his plans to compete in both while still fighting in mixed martial arts, as well as other issues related to the combat sports.
This interview reveals the real Mo Lawal, and is essential to understanding the mindset of a fighter many consider to be a blossoming star.

No Holds Barred: A Saturday Review
We discuss the brilliant performance of Devon Alexander, who unified two of the 140-pound boxing titles by stopping Juan Urango in the eighth round after landing two devastating uppercuts, the first for a knockdown and the second for the win. We also comment on the decision win for Vic Darchinyan over Rodrigo Guerrero.
In college wrestling, Oklahoma State pulled off the upset by edging Iowa State to win the 2010 Big 12 Wrestling Championships. We discuss some of the top performances from that tournament, including the impressive victory by top 197-pound wrestler Jake Varner of Iowa State.
We also comment on some of the action in mixed martial arts, including the TKO win by Dominick Cruz over Brian Bowles and the submission victory by Joseph Benavidez over Miguel Torres on the WEC show.
And we close by critically discussing some recent articles from The Harvard Crimson and Bleacher Report which question the direction of mixed martial arts from very different directions.

No Holds Barred: Fabio Holanda on Canadian Trials for Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup
The Canadian North American qualifiers will take place this Saturday, March 6, at the Pierre-Charbonneau Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It will feature competitors from all across North America, and is scheduled to start at 11 AM. For those unable to attend the live event, there will be a free webcast of it. All the information about the live event and the webcast can be found on the event's web site, at http://www.abudhabipro.ca.
The Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup 2010 will be held April 15-17 in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
We also begin the show with a commentary on the implications for the combat sports of the huge television audiences which watched the Canada-U.S. Olympic gold medal hockey game this past Sunday. Unlike the NHL, Olympic hockey does not allow fighting. We also comment on the entrance into mixed martial arts of a growing number of long past-their-prime athletes from other sports, including Herschel Walker from American football, Jose Canseco from baseball, and now James Toney from boxing, and what that says about how mixed martial arts is positioned and promoted.

No Holds Barred: Mayweather-Mosley and Drug Testing
We focused on the issue of drug testing, since the proposed fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao was cancelled because the Pacquiao camp refused to undergo the type of anti-doping procedures which are done in the Olympics. Mayweather then signed to fight Mosley May 1 in Las Vegas, Nevada, with an announced stipulation that both fighters would indeed have to follow the guidelines of the World Anti-Doping Agency, and not just the much weaker and effectively obsolete testing done by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Right before the start of the formal news conference, held Tuesday, March 2, at the Nokia Theatre in Times Square in New York, Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, the lead promoter in this fight and in which Shane Mosley is a managing partner, said that the drug testing would be conducted by USADA, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, an affiliate of the World Anti-Doping Agency. Oscar De La Hoya then added that it will be done "head to toe" for both fighters.
After the formal news conference, we again spoke with Schaefer to get more information on what could be an historic step forward for the otherwise decaying sport of boxing. There were plenty of words, but few specifics, as he revealed that there was nothing in the contract for this fight to stipulate the penalties for a positive drug test conducted by USADA.
We also spoke with one of the few straight shooters in boxing, Naazim Richardson, who is training Mosley. We spoke with him about why he is so confident that Mosley will be the first fighter to defeat Mayweather, and about his own experiences with the Olympic drug-testing procedures with fighters he has trained, including his son, 2004 Olympian Rock Allen.
Plus, we comment on this news conference itself, and why spectacles like this, including the obligatory pull-apart mini-brawl, are only harbingers of death for the sport and business of professional boxing.
