No Holds Barred: John Perretti on the Dirrell-Abraham Mess
Photo: Tom Casino/Showtime
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the legendary matchmaker and martial artist, and our senior correspondent, John Perretti, about the Andre Dirrell-Arthur Abraham fight. This fight took place Saturday, March 27, in Detroit, Michigan, and was televised in the U.S. on Showtime as part of the Super Six super middleweight tournament. In that fight, Dirrell was outboxing Abraham and, after 10 rounds, was far ahead on the scorecards, when Abraham hit Dirrell after he had slipped to the canvas and was still down. Abraham was then disqualified for an intentional foul which knocked Dirrell out.
We dissect this situation by noting how Dirrell, at the time of the stoppage, had been fighting the best fight of his professional career. We discuss his technique, timing, and execution, which took Abraham, the favorite before the fight, out of his game plan. We focus on the closing scenario itself, and whether or not Dirrell could be accused of acting and pretending he was more hurt than he was. We discuss the specious and contradictory justifications put forth by Abraham for the decisive, illegal blow. We again rail against yet another example of ineptitude by the referee in this fight, which seems to be the norm for many referees in both boxing and mixed martial arts. We examine the possible career-changing effects of the concussion suffered by Dirrell, and question the medical attention he received right after the fight. And we relate this latest fiasco in what should have been a classic fight to how fighters are abused, to the continued decline of boxing, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Amir Khan, Paulie Malignaggi, Arthur Abraham, Andre Dirrell, Kristal Hart, Weekend Boxing Review
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the May 15 Amir Khan-Paulie Malignaggi fight and the March 27 Arthur Abraham -Andre Dirrell fight, and reviews the major boxing action from this past weekend, including the twelfth-round knockout by Wladimir Klitschko of Eddie Chambers.
Wladimir Klitschko, the holder of two of the major heavyweight titles, and generally regarded as the best of the weak heavyweight division, punctuated another dominant performance by closing the show Saturday, March 20, in Dusseldorf, Germany, with a stunning knockout of challenger Eddie Chambers with just seconds remaining in their fight. We comment on that fight, as well as the state of the heavyweight division. We also discuss the brutal first-round knockout by welterweight Randall Bailey of Jackson Bonsu in Belgium, the horrifying absence of any medical assistance for Bonsu in the ring after the knockout, the victory by junior middleweight Sechew Powell in his rematch with Deandre Latimore, and the blimp-like physique of heavyweight contender and Olympic gold medalist Odlanier Solis.
This past Tuesday, at a news conference at Madison Square Garden in New York, we spoke with WBA 140-pound champion Amir Khan and challenger Paulie Malignaggi. They will fight there Saturday, May 15. The careers of both fighters are on the rebound after recent losses, and we asked them how they have been changing their approaches to fighting. We also previewed this fight with our colleague Kristal Hart of the Kristal Hart Show on Manhattan Neighborhood Network.
This coming Saturday, March 27, the Super Six super middleweight tournament enters its second round, as the unbeaten Arthur Abraham takes on Andre Dirrell at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan. This will be shown live on Showtime in the U.S. We spoke with both fighters on a recent media conference call to get their views on what to expect in this important fight.

No Holds Barred: Charles Farrell Reviews Abraham-Taylor, Froch-Dirrell, and Rachael Cordingley
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our colleague and correspondent Charles Farrell, the award-winning boxing writer and fight manager, about the somewhat disappointing first round of fights in the super middleweight tournament known as the World Boxing Classic, held Saturday, October 17.
In those fights, undefeated former middleweight titleholder Arthur Abraham (31-0, 25 KOs) won with a brutal twelfth-round knockout of former undisputed middleweight world champion Jermain Taylor (28-4-1, 17 KOs) at the O2 World Arena in Berlin, Germany, while WBC champion Carl Froch (26-0, 20 KOs) won an ugly split decision over previously unbeaten Andre Dirrell (18-1, 13 KOs) at the Trent FM Arena in Nottingham, England.
We discussed these fights themselves; why Abraham emerged as the clear winner of all the fighters Saturday night; why the devastating knockout of Taylor, the third in his last five fights, should signal the end of his career as a boxer; how both Froch and Dirrell gave dismal performances, and the supposed controversy over the outcome of their fight; an evaluation of the next fight in this tournament, when Mikkel Kessler faces Andre Ward November 21 in Oakland, Calif., as well as the second and third rounds of this tournament; why, despite its less-than-inspiring start, the tournament could still be successful; how potential dropouts in the tournament could endanger it; why so many people remain so cynical and negative about everything in boxing, as happens in the last stages of a dying romantic relationship; and why so much of the boxing public is instead talking about Carl Froch's girlfriend, Rachael Cordingley.

No Holds Barred: Why Boxing Is A Bad Lover; Arthur Abraham-Jermain Taylor, Carl Froch-Andre Dirrell World Boxing Classic Previews
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by lamenting how the abject failure of the boxing establishment to adapt to the latest online video technology has made this sport the hardest combat sport to love.
The October 10 Juan Manuel Lopez-Rogers Mtagwa fight is widely being hailed as a Fight of the Year candidate, but was only televised on an independent pay-per-view in the U.S. It is now available for free on YouTube, although it was not posted by the promoters. Thus, as we explain, for fight fans to watch the great fights from around the world and to be able to afford to do so, they must be able to use sites like YouTube, SopCast, DeliCast, WWITV, TVU, Livestation, KeyHoleTV, and the MyP2P and AllP2P forums. We list the top fights around the world remaining for this season, and encourage fans to learn how to use the existing technology, even if the boxing promoters continue on their path to extinction.
This coming Saturday, October 17, the two opening fights in the highly-anticipated Super Six World Boxing Classic take place. This round-robin tournament pits six of the top super middleweights against each other, including the two top belt holders, four undefeated fighters, and three Europeans and three Americans. The winner will no doubt be recognized as the champion of the world in the super middleweight division.
On that date, undefeated former middleweight titleholder Arthur Abraham (30-0, 24 KOs) of Berlin, Germany, will face former undisputed middleweight world champion Jermain Taylor (28-3-1, 17 KOs) of Little Rock, Ark., at the O2 World Arena in Berlin, Germany. WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (25-0, 20 KOs) of Nottingham, England, will fight Andre Dirrell (18-0, 13 KOs) of Flint, Mich., from the Trent FM Arena in Nottingham, England. These fights will be televised on Showtime in the U.S., Primetime pay-per-view on Sky in the UK, and ARD in Germany.
We spoke with these four fighters, Carl Froch and Andre Dirrell, and Arthur Abraham and Jermain Taylor, on recent media conference calls to get their views on their careers and what to expect in their fights October 17.
