No Holds Barred: Real Boxing Still Lives This Week

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the news about real boxing taking place the weekend of July 15, which has been mostly drowned out by the contrived propaganda in the 'media' about the August 26 circus fight.

This Saturday, July 15, Chris Eubank Jr. fights Arthur Abraham in London to secure a spot in super middleweight tournament of the World Boxing Super Series. This will be shown on ITV pay-per-view in the U.K.

In the U.S., the unbeaten Omar Figueroa Jr. returns from an extended injury layoff to face veteran Robert Guerrero in Uniondale, New York. This will be shown on PBC on Fox and Fox Deportes.

There will also be an HBO tripleheader from the Forum in Inglewood, California. WBC super featherweight champ Miguel Berchelt will fight former champ Takashi Miura, WBA super featherweight champ Jezreel Corrales will fight Robinson Castellanos, and light heavyweight Joe Smith Jr. will face Sullivan Barrera.

We also discuss the press conference announcing the September 23 fight between WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker and Hughie Fury, and the announcement by Hayemaker Ringstar, the joint venture between David Haye and promoter Richard Schaefer, of their TV rights deal with UKTV, the biggest multichannel broadcaster in the UK, for its entertainment channel Dave.

No Holds Barred: Carl Froch, Arthur Abraham, Andre Ward, Sakio Bika, Super Six World Boxing Classic

(Photo: Tom Casino/Showtime)

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the super middleweight title fights which will be held this Saturday, November 27, between Carl Froch and Arthur Abraham, and Andre Ward and Sakio Bika.

In the last fight of the third stage of the Super Six World Boxing Classic, Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KOs), originally from Yerevan, Armenia, and now fighting out of Berlin, Germany, and Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KOs) of Nottingham, United Kingdom, will fight for the vacant WBC super middleweight title at the Hartwall Areena in Helsinki, Finland. Both have already earned spots in the semifinals of the Super Six, although the outcome of this fight will determine their seeding.

In a non-tournament fight but one where he has to defend his WBA super middleweight title, Andre Ward (22-0, 13 KOs) of Oakland, California, U.S., will fight Sakio Bika (28-4-2, 19 KOs) of Sydney, Australia, via Douala, Cameroon, at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. Ward has also earned a berth in the Super Six semifinals, along with Glen Johnson.

In the U.S., Showtime will telecast the Froch-Abraham fight on same-day tape-delay along with a live telecast of the Ward-Bika fight, at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast). In the U.K., the Froch-Abraham fight will be on Primetime on pay-per-view, and also streamed live on http://www.primetimelive.co.uk. It will also be shown on ARD in Germany, as well as in other countries.

We spoke with Carl Froch, Arthur Abraham, Andre Ward, and Sakio Bika on media teleconference calls to get their views on what to expect in their fights. We also discuss the coming conclusion of the Super Six World Boxing Classic, which remains the best thing in boxing today.

In addition, we address a number of major topics in boxing, including the stunning one-punch, second-round knockout by middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KOs) over Paul Williams (39-2, 27 KOs) in their rematch Saturday, November 20. That should make Sergio Martinez the leading candidate for fighter of the year for 2010.

We also discuss the lightweight title fight between champion Juan Manuel Marquez and challenger Michael Katsidis in Las Vegas, also on Saturday, November 27, which will be shown on HBO in the U.S. And we comment on a several controversies in boxing, including the David Haye-Audley Harrison non-fight and the role of gambling, the latest legal problems of Manny Pacquiao, and more.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti on the Dirrell-Abraham Mess

Photo: Tom Casino/Showtime

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the legendary matchmaker and martial artist, and our senior correspondent, John Perretti, about the Andre Dirrell-Arthur Abraham fight. This fight took place Saturday, March 27, in Detroit, Michigan, and was televised in the U.S. on Showtime as part of the Super Six super middleweight tournament. In that fight, Dirrell was outboxing Abraham and, after 10 rounds, was far ahead on the scorecards, when Abraham hit Dirrell after he had slipped to the canvas and was still down. Abraham was then disqualified for an intentional foul which knocked Dirrell out.

We dissect this situation by noting how Dirrell, at the time of the stoppage, had been fighting the best fight of his professional career. We discuss his technique, timing, and execution, which took Abraham, the favorite before the fight, out of his game plan. We focus on the closing scenario itself, and whether or not Dirrell could be accused of acting and pretending he was more hurt than he was. We discuss the specious and contradictory justifications put forth by Abraham for the decisive, illegal blow. We again rail against yet another example of ineptitude by the referee in this fight, which seems to be the norm for many referees in both boxing and mixed martial arts. We examine the possible career-changing effects of the concussion suffered by Dirrell, and question the medical attention he received right after the fight. And we relate this latest fiasco in what should have been a classic fight to how fighters are abused, to the continued decline of boxing, and much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews one of the most innovative and welcome developments in boxing, the Super Six World Boxing Classic, a round-robin, six-fighter tournament in the super middleweight division featuring the best fighters in the world at that weight.

Competing in this tournament are the unbeaten WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (25-0, 20 KOs) of England, the WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (41-1, 31 KOs) of Denmark, the former undisputed middleweight world champion Jermain Taylor (28-3-1, 17 KOs) of Little Rock, Ark., the now-former and still-unbeaten IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (30-0, 24 KOs) of Germany, the 2004 Olympic gold medalist and unbeaten WBC number one contender Andre Ward (19-0, 12 KOs) of Oakland, Calif., and the 2004 Olympic bronze medalist and unbeaten WBC number two contender Andre Dirrell (18-0, 13 KOs) of Flint, Mich.

The winner of this tournament is certain to be regarded as the true super middleweight champion of the world.

The opening round will have three fights, beginning this fall, on dates and at locations to be announced. Carl Froch will face Andre Dirrell, Mikkel Kessler will face Andre Ward, and Arthur Abraham will face Jermain Taylor.

At the kickoff news conference at Madison Square Garden in New York this Monday for this history-making event, we had a chance to speak with fighters Carl Froch, Mikkel Kessler, Arthur Abraham, and Andre Dirrell about this tournament and their fights. We also spoke with promoters Lou DiBella and Dan Goossen, with boxing writer and television analyst Steve Farhood, and with Ken Hershman, senior vice president and general manager of Showtime Sports, which is the key force behind this tournament and will televise it in the U.S.

SecondsOut Radio: Manny Pacquiao, David Diaz, Weekend Review

  • SecondsOut Radio with Eddie Goldman

  • On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman reviews some of the major fights held this past weekend, and previews this coming Saturday's fight between Manny Pacquiao and David Diaz.

We begin by particularly focusing upon the long-awaited rematch between IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (27-0, 22 KOs) and Edison Miranda (30-3, 26 KOs), held at a catch-weight of 166 pounds Saturday, June 21, in Hollywood, Florida, and shown in the U.S. on Showtime. While Abraham won their first bout, held in September 2006 in Germany, by unanimous decision amidst great controversy, this time he left no doubt as to the verdict by knocking down Miranda three times in the fourth round and stopping him for a TKO victory.

We also discuss the bout featured on HBO this same night, where 24-year-old Andre Berto (22-0, 19 KOs) picked up the vacant WBC welterweight title, last held by the now-retired Floyd Mayweather Jr., by stopping an overmatched Miguel "Miki" Rodriguez (29-3, 23 KOs) in the seventh round.

This coming Saturday, June 28, one of boxing's international icons, Manny Pacquiao (46-3-2, 35 KOs), moves up in weight to lightweight to challenge the WBC titleholder, David Diaz (34-1-1, 178 KOs). This fight will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, and shown in the U.S. on HBO pay-per-view.

After reviewing the records of both fighters, we hear the responses of both Manny Pacquiao and David Diaz to questions we asked of them on their media conference calls this past week.

It is free to listen to SecondsOut Radio, but you must register to gain access to it. Just click here, and listen, learn, and enjoy.
