NO HOLDS BARRED: Todd Hester of Gladiator Magazine
On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman speaks with one of the pioneers in mixed martial arts journalism, Todd Hester, the publisher and editor-in-chief of Gladiator Magazine.
In a lengthy discussion, we go over the origins and evolution of the sport now known as mixed martial arts, and especially point to its roots in grappling. We critique the current predominant direction in this sport, where sportsmanship and positive values are no longer promoted. And we discuss how Gladiator Magazine (for which I am also writing) is beginning to play a role in striving to get mixed martial arts to return to the path of emphasizing the many positive aspects of the combat sports and the martial arts.

NO HOLDS BARRED Supports Day of Silence June 26
While NO HOLDS BARRED is technically a podcast and a talk show, these technical and genre distinctions pale in importance to the issue of the attack by big business on the mainly fledgling and grassroots Internet radio webcasters. As a veteran of Internet radio, from eYada.com on, I again remind folks that an injury to one is an injury to all.
Here is the press release explaining the Day of Silence:
For Immediate Release
The Sounds of Silence Will be Heard By Millions
National Day of Silence for U.S. Webcasters to be Held in Protest of Fee Hike
WASHINGTON D.C. - The regularly scheduled programming of millions of Internet radio listeners will be temporarily interrupted tomorrow when tens of thousands of U.S. webcasters observe a national Day of Silence. Protesting the recent 300 percent royalty rate increase for online music webcasters, the aim of the industry wide daylong blackout is to raise awareness of the threat these new rates pose to the future of Internet radio and rally support for legislation pending in Congress.
"Webcasters of every size and from every corner of the country will stand united tomorrow to protest a very real and fast approaching threat to their livelihood," said Jake Ward, a spokesperson for the SaveNetRadio Coalition. With nearly a half million emails and phone calls from webcasters, listeners, and the artists they support sent to Congress in just the last two months, this national grassroots campaign has certainly captured the attention of lawmakers, but there is more to be done and time is running out.
During the National Day of Silence webcasters will urge their listeners to contact their congressional representatives and ask them to support the Internet Radio Equality Act and preserve the future of Internet radio. Tomorrow the silence of tens of thousand of webcasters will make the call to save Internet radio heard loud and clear.
Internet-only webcasters and broadcasters that simulcast online will alert their listeners that "silence" is what Internet radio may be reduced to after July 15th, the day on which 17 months' worth of retroactive royalty payments -- at new, exceedingly high rates -- are due to the SoundExchange collection organization, following a recent Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) decision.

SecondsOut Radio: Travis Simms, Don King, Scot X. Esdaile
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on some aspects of Ricky Hatton's impressive fourth-round knockout of Jose Luis Castillo this past Saturday in Las Vegas which others have overlooked.
We next focus on what should be a Super Saturday for boxing, July 7.
On that day, in Cologne Germany, IBF heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko will try to avenge his April 2004 loss to challenger Lamon Brewster in a title fight scheduled for 12 rounds. That fight will be screened in most countries as a live Internet pay-per-view on SecondsOut.tv, at http://www.secondsout.com/ppv. (The Internet pay-per-view will not be available in North America, Germany, and Russia.)
That same day, July 7, will see a clash of unbeaten fighters as WBA super welterweight champion Travis Simms (25-0, 19 KOs) puts his belt on the line against Joachim Alcine (28-0, 18 KOs). This fight headlines a card at the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Connecticut, not far from Simms's hometown of Norwalk, Connecticut. It will be shown live in the US on Showtime, and is promoted by Don King Productions.
This past Thursday there was a press conference in Bridgeport to kick off the promotion of this card. We were there and got a chance to speak with Travis Simms, Don King, and Scot X. Esdaile of the Connecticut NAACP, which is involved in supporting this event.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Come Clean, Royce Gracie
On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman makes a public but personal appeal to MMA and Jiu-Jitsu legend Royce Gracie, who fought on the June 2 K-1 Dynamite card in Los Angeles and tested positive for steroid use: Come clean, Royce Gracie.
Here is the full statement regarding Royce Gracie issued Monday, June 18, 2007, by the California State Athletic Commission:
For immediate release:
As a result of the various inquiries that we have received, the California State Athletic Commission contacted the laboratory that performed the testing on Mr. Royce Gracie's anabolic agent/masking agent sample and obtained detailed information regarding the test.
A normal person could have a level of 2 ng/mL of Nandrolone that the human body could potentially produce and an athlete that has just completed rigorous physical exercise could have a level of 6 ng/mL.
We received a written response from the laboratory's Director of Science and Technology confirming the positive "A" sample and positive "B" sample.
Both samples provided by Mr. Gracie had a level of over 50 ng/mL and we were informed that the level itself was so elevated that it would not register on the laboratory's calibrator.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact Armando Garcia, Executive Officer.

SecondsOut Radio: Ricky Hatton, Paulie Malignaggi, Keisha Morrisey
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman focuses on boxing's talent-rich but chaotic 140-pound division.
There are five fighters who currently hold more-or-less major world titles in this division: WBC champ Junior Witter of the UK, WBA champ Souleymane M'baye of France, new IBF champ Paulie Malignaggi of the US, WBO champ Ricardo Torres of Colombia, and Ricky Hatton of the UK who holds The Ring magazine's belt and is considered the linear champion by some.
This past Saturday night, June 16, Malignaggi (32-1, 5 KOs) took a 12-round shutout decision over Lovemore N'dou (45-9-1, 30 KOs) at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., to capture his belt.
This coming Saturday night, June 23, Hatton (42-0, 30 KOs) faces former lightweight champ Jose Luis Castillo (55-7-1, 47 KOs) in a 12-round fight at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
First, we get a report from Keisha Morrisey of Bloodline Boxing Entertainment who covered the Mohegan Sun show from ringside. We discuss Malignaggi's victory over N'dou, the disappointing televised co-feature between Andre Dirrell and Curtis Stevens, and some of the young prospects on the non-televised undercard whose performances were noteworthy and entertained the fans.
We next speak with the new IBF 140-pound champ, Paulie Malignaggi, to get his take on what is undoubtedly the biggest victory of his pro career.
And we speak with the man everyone seems to be gunning for in this division, Ricky Hatton, about how he is approaching this fight with Jose Luis Castillo.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Dr. Margaret Goodman on Tommy Morrison, Doping in Boxing and MMA, and Solutions
On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Dr. Margaret Goodman, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Dr. Goodman, a neurologist who is also the former chief ringside physician for the Nevada commission, has just written an article entitled "What Happened to Doing Our Homework?" for the boxing web site SecondsOut.com (for which I also produce SecondsOut Radio). The article begins to address the controversy surrounding former heavyweight boxing contender Tommy Morrison, who has claimed that his positive test for the HIV virus conducted for the Nevada commission in 1996 was inaccurate.
After an almost 11-year hiatus, Morrison returned to the boxing ring Feb. 22. 2007, in Chester, West Virginia, in a bout sanctioned by that state's athletic commission. He also fought in a fight billed as a "mixed martial arts" bout, although it was not held under MMA rules, this past Saturday, June 9, at the Yavapai-Apache Nation's Cliff Castle Casino in Camp Verde, Arizona. In numerous published reports, Morrison's former agent, Randy Lang, has alleged that recent tests have again confirmed that Morrison is HIV-positive. Morrison has disputed that charge, although he has not made public any tests to refute Lang.
In a lengthy discussion, Dr. Goodman addresses what we really know about the Morrison situation, and whether someone today can go from being HIV-positive to negative. We discuss the latest round of positive doping tests this week involving Johnnie Morton in MMA and James Toney and Danny Batchelder in boxing, and the apparent rampant drug culture in both of these combat sports. We discuss what can be done to combat these health and safety dangers, including what promoters should be doing. And we discuss the question of federal regulation of both boxing and MMA.
(Note: After we recorded this show, it was reported that MMA and Jiu-Jitsu legend Royce Gracie, who fought on the June 2 K-1 Dynamite card in Los Angeles, had also had tested positive for steroid use.)
Also required reading on these subjects is the article "What's so bad about steroids?" by Dr. Todd Chapman on SecondsOut.com.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Charles Farrell on Cotto-Judah, Boxing, MMA, Writing, Music, and More
On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman speaks with award-winning boxing writer and musician Charles Farrell. He covered this past Saturday's dramatic fight between the undefeated WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (30-0, 25 KOs) and the former unified welterweight champion, Zab Judah (34-5, 25 KOs), at New York's Madison Square Garden.
In a lengthy interview, we discuss why this fight was so important and what boxing can learn from it. We also critique films like "Rocky" and TV shows like "The Contender", as well as much of the boxing media. We touch on what Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's knockout of Chuck Liddell at UFC 71 says about the overall skills of many top MMA fighters. And we talk about boxing and music, as well as Charles's playing with jazz legend Ornette Coleman.

SecondsOut Radio: Miguel Cotto, Zab Judah, Manny Pacquiao, Steve Cunningham
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by reviewing the brutal battle between WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (30-0, 25 KOs) and the former unified welterweight champion, Zab Judah (34-5, 25 KOs), before a jubilant sellout crowd of 20,658 at New York's Madison Square Garden this past Saturday night, June 9.
In a competitive battering which left both men's faces cut, swollen, and bleeding, and a certain fight of the year nominee, Cotto won by scoring a TKO over Judah in the 11th round. This fight helped establish Cotto as a legitimate superstar in the sport of boxing while also reestablishing Judah's credentials as a tough and top-level fighter.
We got the comments of both Miguel Cotto and Zab Judah at the packed postfight press conference.
We also spoke with Manny Pacquiao, whose two stoppages of Erik Morales last year led to him being voted the 2006 Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America. He was in New York to receive this award at the BWAA's annual dinner this past Friday night. And we also spoke at this dinner with the new IBF cruiserweight champion, Steve Cunningham, who captured that title from Krzysztof Wlodarczyk May 26 in Katowice, Poland.

This will be the main event at New York's Madison Square Garden and will take place one day before the annual Puerto Rican Day Parade, and one day after the annual awards dinner of the Boxing Writers Association of America, both of which will also be in New York.
We spoke with the defending champion, Miguel Cotto, on a media teleconference call.
We spoke with Zab Judah at the prefight news conference this Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.
We also spoke with promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank, which is the lead promoter for this event, both about this fight and his views on the state of boxing and UFC.

And, on a lighter note, we spoke with two ring girls for this fight who come from a different world from most ring girls, Tarah Rodgers and Jennifer Ohlsson, who are both Ford models.

SecondsOut Radio: Sultan Ibragimov, Jeff Mayweather, Shamone Alvarez, Miguel Cotto, Chad Dawson, Jesus Ruiz
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by reviewing the 12-round unanimous decision victory this past Saturday night, June 2, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, by Sultan Ibragimov (21-0-1, 17 KOs) over Shannon Briggs (48-5-1, 42 KOs) to capture the WBO world heavyweight title from Briggs.
Right after the fight, we spoke with the victorious new champion, Sultan Ibragimov, and his trainer, Jeff Mayweather, to get their evaluations about what had occurred. We also spoke with undefeated rising welterweight Shamone Alvarez (18-0, 11 KOs), who took a 12-round unanimous decision over veteran Jose Luis Cruz (32-3-2, 26 KOs) on that card.
We next preview this coming weekend's fights.
In the main event at New York's Madison Square Garden Saturday night, June 9, undefeated WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (29-0, 24 KOs) will defend his title against the former unified welterweight champion, Zab Judah (34-4, 25 KOs). This fight will be held one day before the annual Puerto Rican Day Parade, and one day after the annual awards dinner of the Boxing Writers Association of America, both of which will also take place in New York. We spoke with Miguel Cotto on a media teleconference call.
Also June 9, WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (23-0, 1 NC, 15 KOs) will defend his title against Jesus "Chuy" Ruiz (19-4, 17 KOs) at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford, Conn. We spoke with both Chad Dawson and Jesus Ruiz on another media teleconference call.
