SecondsOut Radio: Sultan Ibragimov, Jeff Mayweather, Shamone Alvarez, Miguel Cotto, Chad Dawson, Jesus Ruiz
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by reviewing the 12-round unanimous decision victory this past Saturday night, June 2, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, by Sultan Ibragimov (21-0-1, 17 KOs) over Shannon Briggs (48-5-1, 42 KOs) to capture the WBO world heavyweight title from Briggs.
Right after the fight, we spoke with the victorious new champion, Sultan Ibragimov, and his trainer, Jeff Mayweather, to get their evaluations about what had occurred. We also spoke with undefeated rising welterweight Shamone Alvarez (18-0, 11 KOs), who took a 12-round unanimous decision over veteran Jose Luis Cruz (32-3-2, 26 KOs) on that card.
We next preview this coming weekend's fights.
In the main event at New York's Madison Square Garden Saturday night, June 9, undefeated WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (29-0, 24 KOs) will defend his title against the former unified welterweight champion, Zab Judah (34-4, 25 KOs). This fight will be held one day before the annual Puerto Rican Day Parade, and one day after the annual awards dinner of the Boxing Writers Association of America, both of which will also take place in New York. We spoke with Miguel Cotto on a media teleconference call.
Also June 9, WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (23-0, 1 NC, 15 KOs) will defend his title against Jesus "Chuy" Ruiz (19-4, 17 KOs) at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford, Conn. We spoke with both Chad Dawson and Jesus Ruiz on another media teleconference call.
