SecondsOut Radio: Kelly Pavlik, Marco Antonio Barrera, Bob Arum, Oscar De La Hoya
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins with a review of yet another of 2007's stellar fights: the stunning seventh-round stoppage by Kelly Pavlik (32-0, 29 KOs) of Jermain Taylor (27-1-1, 17 KOs) to capture the middleweight championship of the world. Pavlik won that title from Taylor Saturday, September 29, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
We spoke with a victorious Kelly Pavlik right after the postfight news conference to get his analysis of the fight itself and its significance. We also got a comment from promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank about what this fight means for boxing.
This coming Saturday, October 6, the super featherweight rematch between Manny Pacquiao (44-3-2, 35 KOs) and Marco Antonio Barrera (63-5, 42 KOs) also promises to be another memorable battle. This fight takes place at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas and will be shown in the US on HBO Pay-Per-View.
We spoke with Marco Antonio Barrera on a media teleconference call about what to expect in what he has vowed will be the final fight of his storied career. We also spoke with Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions and Bob Arum about this fight and how boxing can better use the Internet.
We close with a comment about another important fight this Saturday when the newly-crowned WBC interim heavyweight champ Samuel Peter (28-1, 22 KOs) faces Jameel McCline (38-7-3, 23 KOs). This fight takes place at Madison Square Garden in New York and will be shown in the US on Showtime.

Guess Who Topped the Wrestling Journalists' Poll?
As it turns out, it was the first part of that particular prediction which was wrong. I correctly predicted 11 of the 21 gold medalists, just over half. But I do believe that the second part was correct, and this exercise in prognostication played at least some small role in building interest for this event and for wrestling.
Here is the article on TheMat.com about yours truly picking the most gold medalists in this year's poll:
Eddie Goldman picks most gold medalists among international journalists for World Championships
09/28/2007
Eddie Goldman of No Holds Barred emerged as the expert among international journalists who predicted the gold medalists in each weight class prior to the World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Al Bevilacqua of www.nywrestling.com was second with 10 correct winners. Maahyar Rassaei of Iran Wrestling was third with 9 correct champions.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Renzo Gracie, Jermain Taylor, Kelly Pavlik, Andre Berto, Kurt Otto
On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, the second this week, host Eddie Goldman speaks with some of the most important people in mixed martial arts and boxing.
We begin by previewing the middleweight world championship fight between the undefeated, legitimate champion, Jermain Taylor (27-0-1, 17 KOs), and the undefeated top challenger, Kelly Pavlik (31-0, 28 KOs). They will fight this Saturday, September 29, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and live in the US on HBO.
We spoke with both Jermain Taylor and Kelly Pavlik at the final prefight news conference Wednesday in New York. We also spoke with the undefeated 24-year-old rising star Andre Berto (19-0, 16 KOs), who faces veteran David Estrada (21-3, 12 KOs) in a 12-round welterweight fight in the co-feature.
We next go to a lengthy discussion with mixed martial arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Renzo Gracie. The team in the International Fight League (IFL) he coaches, the New York Pitbulls, just completed an undefeated season and captured the 2007 world team championships September 20. We discuss this event with Renzo as well as his plans for the Pitbulls, how he sees the IFL developing, and whether he wants to fight in mixed martial arts again.
We also had a chance to speak with Kurt Otto, the co-founder and commissioner of the IFL. This week it was announced that MyNetworkTV will present a live broadcast of the IFL World Grand Prix semi-finals from the Sears Centre, near Chicago, on Saturday, November 3, at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT. This is the first time a mixed martial arts fight will be carried live in prime time on American broadcast television. We spoke with Kurt Otto about this new development and about what else we can expect from the IFL in the coming months and in the 2008 season.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Todd and Tamera Sturgis, Ross Greenburg, Randy Gordon, Why UFC Does Not Matter
On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing why the UFC should not matter to real aficionados of the combat sports. This commentary is as no holds barred as it gets.
We then spoke with Todd and Tamera Sturgis, who have just released a wonderful documentary called "Under Pressure: Diary of a Cage Fighter's Wife". This film, which is premiering at select locations across the US, will soon be available on DVD. It is a must-see for all who want to learn about what combat sports athletes go through on a daily basis, and what their lives are really like.
Next, we pestered Ross Greenburg, the president of HBO Sports, about the never-ending reports that HBO will be televising UFC shows. We caught up with him at this past week's Mayweather-Hatton news conference in New York. We also spoke there with Randy Gordon, former editor of The Ring magazine and chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission from 1988 to 1995, who now has a show on Sirius Satellite Radio called Fight Club.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Mark Cuban, Erik Paulson, Jeff Ford, HDNet Fights, Boxing's Fall Feast
On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the venture of a new entrant into the world of mixed martial arts, the HDNet Fights series being initiated by Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA. Their first scheduled show is Saturday, October 13, at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
We first offer some advice for this new enterprise about how to position it as a sport and not a spectacle. We also spoke with Mark Cuban on a media teleconference call to get his thoughts on his new role as both a promoter and a broadcaster of mixed martial arts.
The main event on that show will feature the return to MMA action by Erik Paulson for the first time in seven years. He will face another veteran, Jeff Ford, who has been a kickboxing champion and a heavyweight pro boxer as well as a mixed martial arts fighter. We also spoke with both fighters on this media teleconference call.
Also, we provide a glimpse at what should be a stellar, action-packed, and important final four months of 2007 for the sport of boxing. This schedule is absolutely loaded with intriguing, major fights, including: Jermain Taylor vs. Kelly Pavlik (Sept. 29), Manny Pacquiao vs. Marco Antonio Barrera 2 (Oct. 6), Oleg Maskaev vs. Samuel Peter (also Oct. 6), Juan Diaz vs. Julio Diaz (Oct. 13), Sultan Ibragimov vs. Evander Holyfield, (also Oct. 13), Chris Byrd vs. Alexander Povetkin (Oct. 27), Joe Calzaghe vs. Mikkel Kessler (Nov. 3), Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Rocky Juarez (also Nov. 3), Miguel Cotto vs. Shane Mosley (Nov. 10), Jean-Marc Mormeck vs. David Haye (also Nov. 10), Joan Guzman vs. Humberto Soto (Nov. 17), Floyd Mayweather vs. Ricky Hatton (Dec. 8), and more.

Predictions for 2007 World Wrestling Championships
This year I have once again participated. The predictions below are for the 2007 World Championships of Wrestling. This event takes place September 17-23 at the Heydar Aliyev Sport and Exhibition Complex in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The web site of the World Championship Sports Network (WCSN) will provide live and on-demand video coverage of the 2007 World Championships of Wrestling.
TheMat.com has a special section devoted to the 2007 World Championships of Wrestling.
My predictions do not, of course, necessarily turn out correct. Over the years I have had a passable record, usually finishing somewhere in the middle of the pack of the other wrestling journalists who likewise take part in these polls.
The point, however, is not to boast or lament about the accuracy of these predictions. Rather, it is but one attempt to use the media in general and the Internet in particular to encourage informed and intelligent discussion about the world's oldest and greatest sport, its star and champion athletes, and its often obscurely-promoted but major international events.
Predictions for silver and bronze medals are not made because these depend in large part on the much-criticized blind draw system, lack of seeding, and no complete rounds of wrestlebacks used by FILA, the international wrestling federation. The gold medalists, however, have to defeat everyone, regardless of the order in which they face their opponents, so the top finishes should reflect the best wrestlers at this event.
Here are my humble predictions for the individual champions at the 2007 World Wrestling Championships. Most will likely be wrong, but hopefully this exercise will stimulate more interest in this important event.

Las Vegas Casino and Laundry Workers Vote to Authorize Strike
On our Labor Day edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, we included a salute to the Las Vegas-based Culinary Workers Union Local 226. This 60,000-member union is the largest in Las Vegas, where the casinos, hotels, and other venues in which its members work serve as home for countless combat sports events in boxing, mixed martial arts, kickboxing, and wrestling.
Recently, the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and the Bartenders Union Local 165 have been in contract negotiations with the casinos. Some casinos have already agreed to new contracts with the unions, but many others have not, actually seeking crippling givebacks from the workers. The Tropicana, for example, has proposed a contract in which they would opt out of the Culinary Workers Union's health care and pension plans, thus effectively destroying them.
To counter these attacks and protect the livelihood of their members, the unions polled these members to seek approval for the negotiating committees to authorize "economic action, up to a strike."
The vote: 99% in favor.
Below is the press release issued by the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 about these negotiations:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 12, 2007
Las Vegas Casino and Laundry Workers Vote to Authorize Strike
Las Vegas - In two separate shift meetings, members of the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and the Bartenders Union Local 165 voted by a 99% margin to authorize their negotiating committees at fourteen Las Vegas casinos and two industrial laundries to call for economic action, up to a strike. The vote covering almost 10,000 casino and laundry workers affects properties in both Downtown Las Vegas and on the Strip.
D. Taylor, Culinary Union Secretary-Treasurer noted that, “Today, Culinary members authorized their committee to call for economic action, including a strike, if that is what is necessary to achieve a fair contract. We hope that the affected companies see this vote as a wake-up call. Our goal is to return to the negotiating table and achieve fair, new contracts that protect the Las Vegas Dream for every member of this union, whether they work Downtown, on the Strip, in the casinos, or in the laundries.”
The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 represents over 60,000 workers in Nevada. Members of the Culinary Union work in many classifications including cocktail waitresses, cooks, bellmen, kitchen workers, housekeepers, and other service workers. On September 4th, the Culinary and Bartenders Unions, along with their parent union UNITE HERE, announced a $80 million strike fund to pay strike benefits, offer support benefits and cover logistical costs indefinitely.

SecondsOut Radio: Joe Calzaghe, Mikkel Kessler, Kendall Holt
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by previewing the megafight between the undefeated WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe (43-0, 32 KOs) and the undefeated WBC/WBA champion Mikkel Kessler (39-0, 29 KOs). This long-awaited title unification fight will take place November 3 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, near Calzaghe's home.
We spoke with both champions, Joe Calzaghe and Mikkel Kessler, at a New York news conference this past week to get their takes on what to expect in this fight.
On September 1, WBO 140-pound champion Ricardo Torres (32-1, 28 KOs) defended his title with a highly controversial 11th-round TKO win over Kendall Holt (22-2, 12 KOs). This fight took place at the Salon Jumbo del Country Club in Barranquilla, Colombia, Torres's home country. Subsequent reports questioned many aspects of the conduct of this fight, including the stoppage, interference from fans and others during the fight, and more. Videos of both the final round and the entire fight have appeared online, with many who have seen them, along with those in attendance, agreeing that justice was not done that night.
We got a chance to speak with Kendall Holt about all this when he attended the Calzaghe-Kessler news conference, and we have that interview for you this week.
Also, as many already know, the scheduled September 15 fight between WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez and Rocky Juarez has been cancelled. The reported reason is that Marquez suffered a cut on his right hand which led to an infection and swelling, thus leading to the fight's cancellation. We discuss this situation this week.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Jake Rosholt, Ted Ehrhardt of Team Takedown, Labor Day Salute to Las Vegas Culinary Workers Union
On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman begins with a Labor Day salute to the Culinary Workers Union Local 226.
This 60,000-member union, based in Las Vegas, has a "PLEASE DO NOT PATRONIZE LIST" of non-union hotels and casinos. That list includes several which are owned and operated by Station Casinos, whose two top officers are Frank J. Fertitta III and Lorenzo J. Fertitta, who also are the main moneymen behind UFC and Pride. The anti-union practices of Station Casinos were noted in a major news article.
Next, we speak with one of the hottest prospects recently to enter the world of mixed martial arts, Jake Rosholt. Jake was a three-time NCAA Div. 1 wrestling champion for the national champion Oklahoma State Cowboys. He is now 1-0 in mixed martial arts, and next fights Friday, Sept. 28, at the Masters of the Cage XVI event at the Bricktown Coca-Cola Event Center in Oklahoma City, Okla. An Internet pay-per-view is planned for that event.
We speak with both Jake Rosholt and Ted Ehrhardt, managing partner of Team Takedown, which represents Jake and several other former top collegiate wrestlers. We discuss what Team Takedown is and hopes to accomplish, Jake's adjustment to fighting from wrestling, why he decided to switch to mixed martial arts rather than continue wrestling, the different attitudes in mixed martial arts and wrestling, and more.

SecondsOut Radio: Boxing's Fall Feast
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman provides a glimpse at what should be a stellar, action-packed, and important final four months of 2007 for the sport of boxing.
This schedule is absolutely loaded with intriguing, major fights, including Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Rocky Juarez (Sept. 15), Jermain Taylor vs. Kelly Pavlik (Sept. 29), Manny Pacquiao vs. Marco Antonio Barrera 2 (Oct. 6), Oleg Maskaev vs. Samuel Peter (also Oct. 6), Juan Diaz vs. Julio Diaz (Oct. 13), Sultan Ibragimov vs. Evander Holyfield, (also Oct. 13), Chris Byrd vs. Alexander Povetkin (Oct. 27), Joe Calzaghe vs. Mikkel Kessler (Nov. 3), Miguel Cotto vs. Shane Mosley (Nov. 10), Jean-Marc Mormeck vs. David Haye (also Nov. 10), Joan Guzman vs. Humberto Soto (Nov. 17), Floyd Mayweather vs. Ricky Hatton (Dec. 8), and more.
While these fights will be covered more in-depth in the weeks and months to come, and interviews with many of these fighters will allow them to express their views, on this show we highlight the overall importance of this impressive lineup. But also discussed is why boxing's anarchistic structure will limit the ability of the sport, including its fighters and fans, to take full advantage of this upcoming pugilistic feast.
