No Holds Barred: Bigfoot Silva, MMA in New York
We also review some of the history about the situation in New York when mixed martial arts was first legalized and then made illegal in 1997, and show why its banning was not done to ensure fighter safety.
There will be a rally on Tuesday, February 8, in New York City to support legalizing and regulating mixed martial arts in New York. More information can be found on the site of the sponsor of the rally, the Coalition to Legalize Mixed Martial Arts in New York.

No Holds Barred: Donovan Craig on Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament
Our main discussion focused upon the upcoming Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament, which begins February 12 at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and will be shown live in the U.S. on Showtime.
We began our discussion by reviewing the previous records of the fighters in this tournament against each other. Seven of the eight have previously faced other fighters in it, with each having already faced more than one of the tournament fighters. Every one of these seven fighters has at least one win and at least one loss against the tournament fighters they have already fought.
Besides discussing the brackets, the historical importance of this tournament, and how we see it going, we delved into numerous other topics. Among those we talked about were the cultural and political reasons why MMA is still not legal in New York, the role of movies and fiction in combat sports, the significance of and lessons from the Ali-Frazier trilogy and rivalry for MMA, the Jacob Volkmann-Obama situation, the omission of MMA by a recent Harris Poll on their survey about favorite sports, the actual position of M-1 Global on drug-testing and this tournament, and much more.
In addition, an online petition has just been started for Strikeforce to get the legendary Lenne Hardt as a ring announcer for this tournament. You can sign it here.

No Holds Barred: Josh Barnett
He will be competing in the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament in a quarterfinal fight against Brett Rogers at a date and location to be announced.
Barnett is the most controversial fighter in this tournament, since he currently is not licensed to fight in North America. He tested positive for an anabolic steroid prior to a planned August 2009 fight with Fedor Emelianenko, and was thus denied a license by the California State Athletic Commission. This was his second official positive drug test, plus one test run of drug-testing in 2001. (Barnett denies ever taking steroids.) He next fought in Japan and Australia in 2010, where the requirements and standards for allowing fighters to compete are lower than in North America. But he is still regarded as one of the top heavyweights in the world.
He also has been playing cat-and-mouse with the California commission at several hearings which were supposed to have addressed his status. His case is still unresolved following the failure of both him and his legal representation to show up at these hearings at the same time.
Yet there are indications that other commissions may indeed grant him a license if he tests clean in whatever drug-testing they or Strikeforce may conduct. He would then be legally entitled to fight in those jurisdictions.
While Barnett may be able to take advantage of the weak drug-testing by these athletic commissions and lack of any central authority in the combat sport to conduct such drug-testing, his playing the system once again highlights the need for the adoption of the protocols of the World Anti-Doping Agency in the combat sports and by all these athletic commissions. But it also would be wrong to focus mainly on the shortcomings of this one fighter, since it is the very flawed system which is in place which has allowed this situation to exist.
In light of all this, we spoke with Josh Barnett on January 10 when he was in New York for a Showtime and Strikeforce photo and promo shoot. We did ask him about his license situation, but mainly focused on his upcoming fight and related issues. We discussed the importance of this tournament, his fight with Brett Rogers, the issues of the role of grappling and striking in mixed martial arts, and his coaching of fighter Megumi Fujii and her recent loss to Zoila Frausto. We also focused on the role of catch wrestling, its future as a sport and discipline, why a wrestling base is so important for competing in mixed martial arts, why catch wrestling is so important as well, and more.

No Holds Barred: Pat Miletich
The first fighter to hold the UFC 170-pound title and the creator of one of the most influential schools of fighting, Pat Miletich, though not officially retired as a fighter, can now be seen as an announcer for Strikeforce on their telecasts on Showtime.
We spoke with him by phone on Tuesday night about a number of hot topics in mixed martial arts. We discussed the importance of the upcoming Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament, the ongoing battle to legalize mixed martial arts in New York, some of the highlights of his legendary fighting career, and the influence of his style on all of mixed martial arts, where he emphasized fighters developing a well-rounded set of techniques. He elaborated on the comments he had made on the January 7 Strikeforce Challengers telecast, including his praise of the athletic abilities of rising star Tyron Woodley. We also discussed announcing and his good relationship with his fellow Strikeforce announcers, the negativity that pervades much of what calls itself the mixed martial arts media, a little bit about wrestling (especially since Pat is from Iowa), and much more.

No Holds Barred: Scott Coker on the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker about the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament.
We spoke in New York on Monday about this historic tournament, which includes many of the top mixed martial arts heavyweights in the world. We discussed the structure of the tournament, the negotiations between Strikeforce and M-1 Global to re-sign Fedor Emelianenko and have him fight in this tournament, why getting Fedor was "well worth the wait," the licensing situation involving Josh Barnett who is also in this tournament, and more.
In addition, we discussed the efforts to re-legalize mixed martial arts in New York, and the February 8 rally called by the Coalition to Legalize Mixed Martial Arts in New York. "We'll definitely have a voice there," said Scott Coker.
We also read a comment from Nick Lembo of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board about the issue of the length of rounds in this tournament. Many people would like all fights in it, regardless of whether they are for the Strikeforce heavyweight title or not, to be scheduled for five rounds. The tournament starts on February 12 at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and will be shown live in the U.S. on Showtime.

No Holds Barred: Daniel Cormier
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with two-time U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestler and unbeaten mixed martial arts fighter Daniel Cormier.
On Friday, January 7, at the Strikeforce Challengers mixed martial arts card in Nashville, Tennessee, and shown live in the U.S. on Showtime, he notched his seventh consecutive victory with a dominating unanimous decision over Devin Cole.
We spoke with Daniel Cormier by phone on Sunday about his latest victory and his plans in mixed martial arts. We discussed the technique he used in this fight, including his improved striking. Topics included how he has advanced as a fighter since his pro debut in September 2009, the possibility of him competing as an alternate in the upcoming Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, whether or not he will stay at heavyweight, his training at American Kickboxing Academy with fighters such as former wrestler and current UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, the difficulties of trying to compete in wrestling and mixed martial arts at the same time, the greatness of the NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Tyron Woodley
He will be headlining the Strikeforce Challengers mixed martial arts card on Friday, January 7, from the Nashville Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. This card will be shown live on Showtime in the U.S., during their free preview weekend.
In the main event, Tyron Woodley (7-0) will fight Tarec Saffiedine (10-2) in a welterweight (170 pounds) fight.
We spoke Monday evening by phone with Tyron Woodley about what to expect in this fight. Although he was a two-time NCAA Div. I All-American wrestler and Big 12 champion at Missouri, he told us he is coming to fight. We discussed his training in striking and how he has adapted as a mixed martial arts fighter. And he explained where he believes he is in the quest for a Strikeforce welterweight title shot, and how he thinks he would do in fights with top welterweights in that organization.
As a former wrestler, he also discussed the role of wrestling in mixed martial arts and the problems in wrestling which are seeing so many wrestlers leaving that sport to enter mixed martial arts. We also discussed why, in the opinion of so many elite wrestlers who have fought at the top level of mixed martial arts, wrestling is actually a tougher sport than mixed martial arts for the athletes.

No Holds Barred: Old Thoughts for a New Year
Examined are some of the lessons from the Dynamite mixed martial arts and kickboxing card on December 31, 2010, at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, as well as combat sports in ancient Greece and Africa. Discussed is the critical issue of the values combat sports should embrace, as raised in the 2004 essay "The Nature of the Game: The Olympic Legacy" by Dr. Michael B. Poliakoff. We also discuss why we should support fighting sports, the views of George Will and George Orwell on combat sports, what might be the ideal form of combat sports, and much more.
