No Holds Barred: Emilio Novoa on ADCC North American Championships 2010

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Emilio Novoa, the president of the ADCC North American Federation.

The ADCC North American Championships 2010 will be held Saturday, November 20, 2010, at the Belleville High School Gymnasium at 100 Passaic Avenue in Belleville, New Jersey. Registration to compete in this event ends November 13. This is a qualifying event for the most prestigious grappling tournament in the world, the ADCC World Submission Fighting Championships. The 2011 edition of this event will be held at a time and place to be announced.

We spoke Sunday evening with Emilio Novoa about the ADCC North American Championships and the goals of the ADCC North American Federation. We had a wide-ranging discussion on topics including why the various styles of grappling are the best combat sports, what they must do to fulfill their potential to become major spectator sports, and how grappling tournaments should be run. We also encouraged everyone to support the ADCC events, whether they be competitors, coaches, fans, or media, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Chris Thomas on Velasquez-Lesnar, Alvarez-Huerta, and Askren-Good

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the major fights in mixed martial arts and boxing this past weekend with our colleague Chris Thomas.

We analyzed the Bellator 33 fights of Thursday, October 21, where Bellator lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez stopped Roger Huerta after the second round in a non-title bout, and Ben Askren won a unanimous decision over Lyman Good to capture the Bellator welterweight title. We also had a lengthy discussion about the first-round demolition by Cain Velasquez over Brock Lesnar to win the UFC heavyweight belt, the state of the heavyweight division in mixed martial arts, and why the best heavyweight fighters in that sport are to be found in Strikeforce. In addition, we commented on the boxing on Sunday, October 24, in Tokyo, including the 12-round decision win by Toshiaki Nishioka over Rendall Munroe to retain the WBC super bantamweight belt, and the second-round TKO by Roman Gonzalez over Francisco Rojas to win the WBA interim light flyweight pound belt.

No Holds Barred: Declan Hill on Proposal for International Anti-Corruption Agency for Sports

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with investigative journalist, documentary maker, and academic Declan Hill.

He is the author of the best-selling book "The Fix: Soccer and Organized Crime". He also spoke at the recent meeting of the European ministers of sport in Baku, Azerbaijan, about the need for an international agency to fight corruption in sport, similar to what the World Anti-Doping Agency does regarding doping. The European ministers of sport unanimously passed a resolution asking the Council of Europe to help set up such an international agency, and now plans are in the works to carry this out.

In a ground-breaking discussion, we spoke Thursday afternoon with Declan Hill about corruption in sports and what to do about it. He explained how this corruption in sports is largely the result of the influence of illegal gambling operations, and how legalized and regulated sports gambling would help greatly reduce it, along with ending the exploitation of underpaid athletes. We discussed how such an agency could affect the poorly regulated or even unregulated combat sports, which usually have no central leagues like most other sports do. He also explained that while establishing such an agency will be a lengthy process, it is imperative that it be done, even for sports where illegal gambling is not yet considered to have had a major corrupting influence.

No Holds Barred: George Hero, Midwood Wrestling Exhibition 2010, MMA, and Pindar the Poet of Ancient Greece

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with the legendary coach and founder of the Midwood High School wrestling team in Brooklyn, New York, George Hero.

Coach Hero will be one of the many current and former Midwood wrestlers, alumni, and coaches who will be competing at the Midwood Wrestling Exhibition 2010, this Saturday, October 16, beginning at noon, at the Midwood High School Gymnasium at 2839 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn. This event will feature folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman wrestling. Coach Hero will be facing heavyweight Yuriy Petriv in the main event in a match held under NCAA rules, and with special guest referee Bob Backlund, a 1971 NCAA Div. II national champion at North Dakota State University before going into the WWWF.

There is a Facebook page with more information on this event here.

We had an enlightening and wide-ranging discussion Tuesday night with Coach Hero about the importance of this event, wrestling, and the combat sports in general. We discussed how these combat sports greatly benefit both the mind and body, and build positive values, which is especially important now in a culture which emphasizes so much negativity. We refuted many of the claims of the critics of mixed martial arts in New York, where the politicians are still keeping this sport illegal. We noted the many ways wrestling and mixed martial arts are very closely linked. And he discussed how Midwood Wrestling and the Beat The Streets organization, are bringing many youths into wrestling programs for the first time.

Coach Hero also stated, "We have to go back to the ancient Greek ideals about athletics." He recommends to his athletes that they study the writings of Pindar, the great lyric poet of ancient Greece, whose writings include commentary on the Olympics and other athletic events of his era. So we read an excerpt from Pindar, and encouraged others to learn from this classic poet as well.

No Holds Barred: Tyron Woodley

Photo: Esther Lin/Strikeforce

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with unbeaten Strikeforce mixed martial arts fighter Tyron Woodley.

He registered his first knockout win in his eight victories by stopping former world and Pan American jiu-jitsu champion Andre Galvao in just 1:48 of the first round of their Strikeforce fight on Saturday, October 9, 2010, at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, and shown in the U.S. on Showtime.

We spoke with Tyron Woodley, a two-time Division I All-American wrestler at the University of Missouri and a Big 12 champion, by phone Sunday morning. We discussed, of course, his dominating and quick victory. He explained how he has become a well-rounded fighter after having won six of his first seven wins by submission, and how close he believes he is to a title shot in the welterweight (170-pound) division in Strikeforce. He also emphasized that he would like to fight next on the December 4 Strikeforce card in St. Louis in his home state of Missouri.

We review what we have found out about the positions on this issue of all seven candidates for New York governor who are on the ballot for this year's election on November 2. No Holds Barred: Nevada State Athletic Commission Hearing on Drug Testing and Brain Health Study

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman plays the audio from the main part of the meeting on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, of the Nevada State Athletic Commission in Las Vegas, regarding changes in their drug-testing procedures, and a proposal for a free brain health study for fighters.

Following a hearing on drug-testing on June 9, 2010, the commission, once a leader in the quest for fighter safety, rebuffed the many people who have advocated that they adopt the internationally-accepted procedures of the World Anti-Doping Agency, including random and unannounced blood and urine testing for banned and dangerous substances. Instead, the commission amended their procedures merely by adding some additional analysis to their existing annual blood tests for licensing, such as measuring hemoglobin and hematocrit levels. This exposed the position of some on the commission who had argued that urine tests alone caught everything. This position has already been discredited in the medical community, since urine tests cannot at present detect cheating by use of human growth hormone and other substances. But the latest change by the commission continues to make it very easy for dope cheats to evade getting caught, since they will know exactly when they will be tested.

The commission also approved a proposal by the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health to conduct free brain scans and physicals for boxers and mixed martial artists over a period of several years. The purpose is to measure the effects of these combat sports on these athletes, in particular on their brains and neurological health. Where this leads is unknown, but it definitely is a step in the right direction.

No Holds Barred: Matthew Kaplowitz on the Fight Nerd Video Game Open, Brick City MMA, and Bellator Tryouts

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with Matthew Kaplowitz, The Fight Nerd.

We open our lengthy and nerdy interview by discussing two mixed martial arts events Matthew covered on Saturday, October 2: the fighter tryouts for the Bellator Fighting Championships in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the debut show of the Brick City Fighting Championship in Newark, New Jersey. We analyzed the fights on the Brick City card, as well as the organization of their first event, and noted how often fighting events are better experienced live than on television or webcast.

No Holds Barred: Jessica Aguilar on Her Controversial Loss to Zoila Frausto, and Her Next Fight

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with mixed martial arts fighter Jessica Aguilar.

At Bellator 31 on September 30 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Jessica Aguilar fought Zoila Frausto in the semifinals of the Bellator 115-pound women's tournament. The result was a highly-controversial split decision win for Frausto, a verdict not supported by most of those who were in attendance or watching on television. Many simply said that Jessica Aguilar was "robbed". But with the win, Zoila Frausto got a berth in the tournament finals on October 28, where she will face the unbeaten Megumi Fujii.

We spoke Saturday afternoon with Jessica Aguilar about this fight and this disputed decision. She explained her strategy of mainly keeping the fight standing, although she is a world-class grappler and American Top Team member. We discussed what she might have done differently in this fight. She also revealed that she will be fighting on that October 28 Bellator card in Hollywood, Florida, against an opponent to be named. But if Zoila Frausto is unable to fight in the tournament finals because of the injuries she suffered in the September 30 fight, Jessica Aguilar might replace her in the finals against Megumi Fujii.
