On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reviews the highly-successful M-1 Selection 2010 Americas Finals, which took place Saturday, September 18, at Bally's Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Tournaments were held over three events in five weight classes, featuring up-and-coming mixed martial arts prospects.
Right after the fights, we spoke with two of the most impressive fighters in this tournament, Byron Byrd and Kenny "Deuce" Garner, both of American Top Team. Byron Byrd won the light heavyweight finals by submitting Daniel Vizcaya with a triangle at 2:43 of the first round. Kenny Garner won the heavyweight finals by defeating Pat Bennett by TKO at 2:31, also in the first round.
In addition, we spoke at length with Evgeni Kogan, Director of Operations for M-1 Global, about this event, its significance, the international plans for M-1 Global, their plans for a full slate of M-1 Challenge events in 2011 in the U.S. and Europe, the future of M-1 Global fighter and shareholder Fedor Emelianenko, their relationship with Strikeforce, their plans for pursuing an American television deal, and more.
Plus, we spoke with two veterans of the combat sports world, Paula Romero, the original "Queen of MMA", and Keisha Morrisey, the "Boxing Empress". Both have worked for many years in the combat sports, so we had a chance to get their seasoned opinions about this event and M-1 Global.
The next M-1 Global events will be held October 28 in St. Petersburg, Russia, and December 11 in Atlantic City, where fights to crown the first- ever M-1 Challenge world champions will take place.
